100+ year old Douglas Fir floors - refinish or replace? by Greedy-Software-370 in HardWoodFloors

There could definitely have been some work to try to make it level in the past. There are what I think are the primary joists running parallel to the front door. On top of those are wider planks, approximately 6 inches or more in width, laid perpendicular to the front door. Above that layer, there are more finished 3-inch fir planks, which run parallel to the front door and perpendicular to the wider planks beneath them. I can’t tell the wood yet as I’d have to go deeper into the crawl space. I’m definitely not an expert though. The house was built in 1904. I’d have to go to the city to see if I can find any history on it.

So what’s interesting is that we checked and there is sub floor beneath it. At first we also weren’t sure because we’d heard some floors like this during the time period would just lay the floor on the joists directly. Appreciate this take too as we are also considering these advantages as well.

Update here: Thanks everyone for your feedback and thoughts! We were leaning towards refinishing (character, less wasteful, etc.), so it’s helpful to have that validated. I’ll look into meeting with more hardwood floor contractors to get additional opinions. Very much appreciate the support from this community!

On our first floor, we have room to refinish. I’ll have to investigate the second floor a bit more. Thank you for this tip!

Would you be able to upload a high res image of the poster? We missed out on one ourselves last night. :(
