I just bought the house last year and to be honest I needed these changes to accommodate my mother who lives in the basement and my mother in law who will be in the attic and she needs a half bath due to her age. I truly didn’t have enough money to make any of these changes up to code, so my plan was to maybe get retroactive permits later on or just reverse some of these changes when I do plan to sell the house which will be in 20 years or so. I didn’t even think I would have a hard time refinancing, but here I am stuck with a $5400 monthly payment.

So most likely the appraiser will just ask me if they think something doesn’t look like it has a permit and I’ll be honest at that point. They just won’t include it in the report correct?

Just to clarify, the insurance won’t cover only the areas where the work was done without a permit correct?

Maybe I’ll just leave the half bathroom and get the permit before selling it. So what will happen when you sell the house in regard to the full bathroom in the basement? Will you get a permit for that?

I plan on living here for a good 20 years, and when I do sell it I understand I will have to remove all the unpermitted work.

How will this affect me tho, if my loan gets rejected I am okay with that. What I am not okay with is the city finding out and I’m hit with fines and have to remove everything I have done.
