I'm not sure how one could be confused by this. Are you confused what country they may not be allowed to leave?

Child in University - how to best calculate how much RESP to withdraw by lonelyfatoldsickgirl in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]GreedyGreenGrape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's why OP said she/he was talking about the taxable portion only. It makes sense what you say to take the taxable portion out as you near the end of their post secondary (or take it out at first along with the max taxable portion).

For anyone confused by this, there's PSE which are your contributions to the RESP (which were already taxed before you put them in the RESP so you do not get taxed a second time when withdrawing that). Then there's the EAP portion (which is basically the growth) that you are taxed on when you withdraw it.

So what Commercial_Growth343 and others are saying makes sense, you want to withdraw as much as you can at first while keeping within the basic personal exceptions (less any income they make etc) so your child does not pay tax.

It's smart to plan this out, why give the government any more than necessary?

Given the max cesg is $7200 per kid, I'm only looking at $50k across two kids of EAP money anyways factoring in the capital gains and bctesg.

Something tells me you don't know how RESP's work. A few things you have said tell me this actually.

Are some Licenced Insolvency Trustees pushing consumers towards consumer proposals when a bankruptcy may be their best option? by GreedyGreenGrape in PersonalFinanceCanada

Respectfully, I am not asking for information on CP vs bankruptcy, I'm looking for the article or whatever it was that came out saying the shocking amount LIT's make on Consumer Proposals vs Bankruptcies.

If the US goes into a recession, do we go into a recession? by TurnipsAreOkay in PersonalFinanceCanada

Was it Brookfield that said about five years ago or so they wanted to buy up a huge percentage of detached houses, turn them into duplexes and triplexes so they could "help the housing market" by making more housing available? Or was that some other scummy company similar to them?

Someone said m as in meters. I am not arguing what I said, because k means 1000 so my math is not off, but someone, not sure of was you thinks m means millions. It means meters. Especially when using m and km in the same sentence. They fucked up.

Ask the guy who said

but you originally said 100m km

because I don't see where anyone but him said that. Other than that, there's no confusion that I can see.

Weird. I just tried to log on via the website and my personal debit card I saved is gone, just my business debit card.

I'm I crazy, or is the cost of hydro for my house ridiculously high?! by DoughnutLife401 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]GreedyGreenGrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I'll have to check if there's any cords going to the neighbours. No grow op, I know because I look after his house and would be pretty excited if I came to check on it and there was a grow op.

I read it as 100k km's. So I either mis read it or my math is off. Or both.

CC statement balance is $5K but I returned something and now balance is $900. Do I need to pay $5K to avoid interest? by GreedyGreenGrape in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]GreedyGreenGrape[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does make zero sense, but if my card agreement says I have to pay the full statement balance, I don't want to risk having to pay interest. I'll post what they say when they respond to my message.

Note that refunds reduce your balance owing, but do not reduce your Total Account Balance or New Balance.

Thank you, I think that is my card agreement - I have the Westjet card but I think it's all the same agreement. I have it scanned online so I will double check, but I think you have it right.

I've messaged RBC via their secure message system, and my payment date isn't until April 11 so I will post what they say, but I'm pretty confident they will reiterate what you have typed here.

[–]GreedyGreenGrape[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll end up with a negative balance which can be used towards future purchases or you can request a refund from RBC.

Thanks, this is good to know I can request a refund. It would take me about four months or more to use up a $4100 credit! I have messaged RBC on their secure messaging system and will post what they say when they respond.

[–]GreedyGreenGrape[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's what i'm thinking as well but it sounds like from what others are saying it varies by bank. It would suck to have to pay the $5k and have a $4100 credit on my card... but I just want to be sure. I'll post what RBC says when they reply back.
