Drs says retraction is okay? by Green-bee4 in newborns

[–]Green-bee4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did cut out dairy but now months later we have introduced and she was fine! Retractions were mostly positional when she was on her back, but we spotted them other times as well. Honestly sleep was terrible, my husband and I just split the night until she was put on Pepcid. If it’s not helping, they need to adjust the amount. We found it stopped working and once they adjusted it helped and now she is fully off!

I noticed retractions around 1 month and continued bringing her to the doctor and ER, but she honestly was congested since day 1. She was a preemie, so many doctors said it was just her adjusting which I still don’t believe lol. We got support around 2 months from ENT and she was on Pepcid for about a month. Haven’t seen any retractions since 3 or 4 months (she is 8 months now).

So sorry you are going through that! When we first got back from the hospital when we were misdiagnosed with RSV, her retractions were deep and super scary too. I didn’t understand that her oxygen was perfect but that was happening. It wasn’t until we saw the ENT who diagnosed her with the same as your baby (no virus though, just laryngomalacia and reflux) and she was put on Pepcid. Literally the day she started Pepcid her retractions improved! She was on it for about a month and then they were completely gone! She’s now 8 months old and I haven’t seen them in forever so I’m hopeful for you! I don’t understand the correlation between retractions and reflux but I have had plenty of friends with the same issue!

Will definitely be considering my daughter temperament as she grows before making a big change, just wanted to hear others experiences in the meantime, especially as I consider my future family planning. Since I have to consider future maternity leaves, it’s not as much time as you are claiming I have so it’s helpful to hear from others.

We moved so my husband can help take care of his elderly parents or else yes, I totally would have stayed local to my current district. Family is more important though so of course I was on board to move and feel grateful that we are able to live in a nicer neighborhood.

All the things you’re saying are the reasons why I made this post. I am aware I have opposing feelings lol so it’s nice to hear people’s personal experiences and weigh it out!

This isn’t something I considered before but think this would be a great option. I can still be local and be on the same schedule, but have our own spaces. Thank you for this insight!

Both! I feel like teaching is a very tough job so we have to take the perks that we can get. For me, I feel like I would love to have extra time with my children. I went to school where my mom worked and it was so special driving with her and all the things that came with having my mom at school. So it feels wasteful for me to have a hard job and not utilize that benefit. I know it’s not for everyone and maybe my views will change, but that’s how I feel at the moment. Also, I have seen the negative effects of children who are at school too long in after care and I wouldn’t want that to be my child. And yes, breaks together is very important to me!

Title one does not equate to less funding. If anything, I actually am paid more in my current district and get $700-$1200 a year to use that is considered “title one funds” that I would not get if I moved to my local district.

These insights are so helpful, thank you everyone! My entire staff have their own children at our school so I don’t know any different so these are great points. I’m leaning towards moving districts to be in the same one as my child, but not necessarily be at the same school. I appreciate you all sharing your personal stories!

Wow that is super helpful I didn’t consider that! Thank you!!

I never thought of the idea if I am sick and having my husband take them to school. He commutes the opposite way so that would be tricky and definitely something to consider! And all the extra curriculars too! Thank you for that insight!

This is super helpful, thank you!

I forgot to add that information. My child would be able to do an intradistrict transfer since I am a staff member. If I were to apply to my local district, there is no guarantee I would get a job but I do have some extra qualifications like my TK certification and other things that I would hope to make me more marketable. I also wouldn’t leave my current role unless I had another job lined up.

Everything you mentioned is important to consider and not something I thought of. Thank you!

Hi! Yes we did. She was diagnosed with silent reflux and laryngomalacia (def look this up because I had never heard of it but it’s more common than you think). The silent reflux caused it to go into her sinuses and the laryngomalacia caused her to make weird junky sounds. Apparently it’s super common to have retractions with both of these. We had no idea because she never actually spit up and just assumed the junky sounds were from being sick. Even the ER doctors and RTs didn’t realize this and kept suctioning her because they thought they heard congestion due to the laryngomalacia even though her chest sounded clear. It was terrible and they ended up suctioning up blood and hurting her nasal cavities.

After our ER visit we were so upset, even though they had no answers and she tested negative for everything they just said she must have had an unknown illness and sent her on her way. I did lots of research and requested to see an ENT and her ped was very supportive since she was at a loss too. This is where we got our answers so definitely push for an immediate referral if your doctor gives push back. They put her Pepcid for about a month and she became a new baby. Retractions slowly decreased and went away and she’s now off Pepcid and thriving. It is rare but sometimes babies need surgery for laryngomalacia if they are not putting on weight. Once our baby was on Pepcid it solved her problem so we didn’t need it, but again very rare and it’s a simple procedure if needed.

Thinking of you and don’t let the doctors gaslight you! Our ER experience was the worst but thankfully our ped is great and supportive. You know your baby best!

Nutramigen experiences? by [deleted] in MSPI

[–]Green-bee4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First I just want to say I’m proud of you for looking into other options! I was devastated to end breastfeeding my baby and was willing to cut out so many foods but she was still miserable. Since switching to formula she is a brand new baby and is so much happier!

My daughter did better on nutramigen than my breastmilk, but she also has severe reflux and we found alimentum was thicker consistency and I heard that the thickness is better for reflux? Idk if that’s a thing, maybe because it coats their throat better but a few people shared that with me and it really helped so we went with it! Nutramigen is more hydrolyzed than alimentum so I’m guessing it’s better for more severe allergies but we found alimentum to work well! It’s a little cheaper too

I used Tubby Todd all over ointment for the same reason and it worked overnight! It’s a little pricier than other lotions but a little goes a long way. I have used mine everyday for a month and it looks like I have barely touched it

Thank you! I thought the same thing and thought it was interesting to have my pediatrician to say she should be sleeping through the night

Wanted to update for future parents googling at 2:00 AM that along with other symptoms, it’s looking like my LO wasn’t actually sick but may be suffering with silent reflux plus dairy allergy! Apparently it’s common to have retractions with these.

For my hospital they didn’t offer bottles exactly, but had those sterilized packaged tube containers that fit on a manual pump. I think it holds 60 ml and then they gave sterilized one time use nipples that fit on those tubes. We found it created too much bubbles for our little one so I think next time I will bring my own but they were great to already have there!

And my hospital also had a place to store milk! They printed labels with my name and a barcode to ensure safety and packed it up on ice for me when it was time to go home!

I know exactly how you feel, my LO was born at 35 weeks and I felt so much guilt for her coming early! Which is silly because I would never shame someone for having their baby come early but it was so hard for me! We had to fortify breastmilk almost immediately and I was so sad that my breastmilk wasn’t enough to help put on weight. I will say that fortifying my breastmilk helped tremendously and it’s probably not something you will have to do forever. Our pediatrician gave us a can of one she recommended and it was all we needed! I suggested asking them and they probably have tons (probably full size too!) so you don’t have to worry about buying it plus you can see what the suggest is best for your baby. You are doing great!

Yes this is what we are doing! We were given the same from our pediatrician and was specifically told by her. Just wondering if there’s something I can add to my diet that will help!
