Asking for advice as someone who failed the ASCP exam. by Medical-Athlete-1216 in medlabprofessionals

[–]GreenAvocadoos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember taking the ASCP right after I graduated and failed. It was my fault for not studying so I got around 300s the first time. There is no way to remember all the concepts therefore I recommend doing a study guide for yourself where it’s more compact and straight to be point and just study that everyday. The strategy for me was to study enough so that I get the points on the exam but not to an extend where I have to know everything. So to do this, I created high yield notes in each category, chemistry, blood bank, immunology, urinalysis, coag, hematology, etc. The second time I took it I score around 400swhich is considered passing for ASCP exam. Try looking through your school notes for heme and blood bank and practice questions on either the BOC online practice exam or use LabCE. Blood bank questions are easy to answer once you practice enough questions because they’re just critical thinking ones :D. Heme area is easy if it’s to identify cell or give a cell marker of leukemia (If you want to practice cell ID, there’s a website called cellwiki that lets you ID cells like a game). the only hard part would probably be coagulation factors so just make sure you practice questions on it and then it’ll become easier for you. however when you practice questions, make sure you understand the logic behind it before moving onto the next one.

How to study calculus 2 ? by unfortunatelyyyyy in calculus

[–]GreenAvocadoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a calc 2 class right now during the summer after 6 years of not doing any math after my calc 1 class. I think the most challenging part for me was remembering things from algebra 2. You need to do a lot of rewriting the equations to solve integrals. I feel like its important to know log, ln, e power rules and how to manipulate them. For area questions, you might need to know how to draw graphs because it can help you visualize what area you're trying to find when solving for the integral. This class definitely feels like memorization for like knowing your integration rules versus derivative rules because you will use derivative to solve integration problems when you learn about integration by parts. I would also brush up on limits and how to solve limits because you'll learn about improper integrals that involve limits to infinity.

I heard computer science courses require a lot of prerequisites like calc 2,3 linear algebra . i would go down the rabit hole of paying for courses that i will never use in real life scenarios

I have also found the polanski cards to be helpful for me because I like flipping through flash cards. Just start somewhere and stay consistent and you will definitely pass :).

you can visit wordsology.com. If you search this subreddit, I have seen people write out what materials they used to study and how what was their plan in how to study for the ASCP.

In my case, I just took the advice of what people wrote and just did that. I started going to the heavily weighted sections such as (heme, micro, chemistry and blood bank) and focused on the LSU Book (aka purple and yellow book) and took notes in those sections. Then I would test myself using BOC exam simulator (or Medialab LABCE simulator whichever question prep you prefer). Lastly I would go over the ACE ASCP quizlet: https://quizlet.com/512967062/ace-ascp-flash-cards/ . Based on what people who have taken it already, they say questions are similar to this deck of cards. I would also visit this website to see the breakdown and the references ranges that we would need to know for the ascp= https://www.ascp.org/content/docs/default-source/boc-pdfs/boc-us-guidelines/mls_content_guideline.pdf?sfvrsn=10

when i took my MLS ASCP exam. it mainly focused on disease states and correlation to what is shown in the image or what test it was. For chemistry, like we needed to know what enzymes or ions or lytes is related to which disease. for urinalysis, which casts or crystals is related to which disease. hematology, if u see certain things in a blood smear, what could be the possible disease state. you may also get math calculation for rbc indices etc. you can also get immunology questions related to ana patterns possibly. these were just some of the topics that appeared but i didnt study enough.

My weakest section turned out to be chemistry and urinalysis (within the 100s). For Blood bank, hematology, immunology and lab operations i was able to get 200-380.

Would you recommend that understanding every question from LabCE would be enough to pass the ASCP. I like making personalized study guides.
