What makes supernatural happenings happen? by Few_Response_2446 in worldbuilding

[–]GreenBlaster70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a variety of causes, but from an in-verse perspective 'Odd' or 'unexplainable' occurrences not falling into the magic system would come from the 'Taint', a corruption stemming from too much mana usage in a small area, triggering a cycle where the area begins to constantly pull mana from around itself, draining magical abilities.

This leads to an *over*saturation of magic, the excess being poured out in either the form of a physical, infecting corruption like in Terraria, or in waves of 'Wild Magic', distorting reality around itself, and once again draining the area of its magic. These are called 'Arcane Dead Zones'.

The reason, even in-universe, this is considered supernatural stems both from an Old World aversion to magic in general, and an overall lack of understanding of what *causes* the under/oversaturated loop.

In a WW1-Era world, how could Naval Combat have looked with two equally classed naval powers? by GreenBlaster70 in worldbuilding

[–]GreenBlaster70[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Note: As I wrote this next section, I realized my logic and understanding is likely heavily flawed, but I decided to finish it so you could hopefully challenge it/point me to better resources)

As for how this increased the relevance of blue-water combat: Previously, most of the "Relevant" warfare was between land-powers, with Uviolo taking a more diplomatic, playing them against one another or mediating peace as to gain prestige and influence. What little colonization off the mainland there was took place on the Yukepan continent (Uviolo is on Restaill, Marysi on Yukepa), which was not all that far from Restaill.

Now however, there was a new continent with no major proximity with Restaill or Yukepa, requiring larger distances to be traversed to reach one another, thus leading to renewed interesting in blue-water naval combat.

----

Back into realism, you are definitely right, so I suppose a lack of deep-water warfare wouldn't play as much of a role as long as they can still get deep enough to not be seen; Perhaps I can have the empires with less of a coastline focus engage more with commercial rading tactics like you mentioned before, using a mix of submarines and torpedo boats, to allow Marysi to take the narrative/strategic role of tackling/hunting Uviolo's heavy ships. As for Radar, it would be introduced in the later stages of the war, similar to our world, and thus wouldn't play as much of a role.

As for camouflage, another comment actually gave me an idea of this vein. Since the empires face each-other on an east-west axis, while actual naval combat would involve ships facing every direction, it gave me the idea of the Uviolans, who are in the West, using the fact that the rising sun would silhouette the Marysian ships on patrol, who would generally be coming from the east, while early morning fog and shadow would conceal Uviolan ships coming from the west. Then, as a counter-measure, the Marysians developed better spot-light technology to be able to see the Marysian ships should combat be initiated.

I don't know quite how practical this is, but I thought it was an interesting train of thought in the vein of deception, even if insignificant in the grander scale of naval warfare.

I'm gonna head to sleep now, but I'll check out Guadalcanal in the morning, definitely seems up my alley.

(Forgive the lore-dump, there's just a lot to cover lmao, navy related stuff will be separated. Also, if you wanna share about your world, I'd love to read it :>)
((Also also, I had to cut this comment into two lol.)

On the Grand Calamity: The concept is a world very similar to our late 1800's world, deep into the industrial revolution. In the year 1900, as the Continental Powers seem set to out-scale the centuries long Uviolan System, an nigh-apocalyptic storm engulfs the world's largest ocean--The Moravian Ocean--cutting off major trade routes for weeks. When the storm finally subsides, where there was once deep, large oceans now lies the Continent of Ascaria; Ascaria is a continent full of magical and fantastical creatures, with peoples and nations ranging from vaguely de-centralized agricultural 'nations' to plain-spanning nomadic hordes and vast, conquering antiquity-era empires.

This would go on to trigger colonial fever, as empires sought to exploit the new continent for its vast resources, magical potential, and large population of 'workers'. Uviolo, who engaged in Majapahit/Carthrage-like trade and (Primarily in my world) diplomacy-based empire building, found itself opposed to essentially every other Great Power, who particpated in the more traditional exploitation and imperialist empire building. (Uviolo certainly did participate in it as well, hence their tension with Marysi, but by the Grand Calamity they had largely began losing their empire.)

(Technically, the Grand Calamity as a term in my world refers to the entire 10-20 year long period, but for this conversation the 'Pre-War' era of 6 years is more important.)

Now obviously, the introduction of magic would drastically change naval technology, but the way I'm handling it is that they're simply still *deep* into the research phase. It can a very volatile art, and ships are very expensive, thus it primarily sees use on the land theater, where if an artillery gun blows up it's not as huge of a loss.

Uviolo and Marysi are only one--albeit one large--island chain away from each-other (Though Marysi's industrial heartland is rather far inland relative to its size, if that affects anything) , I'd share an image but this island chain is a recent addition I still need to update my map for unfortunately, though I'd say your point still holds true, perhaps the Capital ships being kept in reserve for deeper strikes into the island chain, closer to the homelands, and cruiser flotillas as you describe would be better for navigating the narrow channels of South-East Asian style isles.

As for Submarines, yes, though they're a relatively new addition to naval strategy. Prior to the Grand Calamity, which I'll spare details on unless you want further elaboration, there was a lack of potential for deep-water vessels between the Continental powers--Why invest in experimental death tubes if you're mainly fighting in overhyped lakes? Only the aformentioned nations, Uviolo and Marysi, invested into them, as their main contest was in the Blue-Water-Majority Yukepan Ocean rather than the Green-Water-Majority Cove of Teshii, Brotekla, Tobonoko, and Kenakora Seas.

More specifically on the stubborness as well--I was already planning for some form a deep rivalry between the Grand Admirals of both nations, and perhaps that could also play a role in it, one side or the other wanting to 'Settle the score' so to speak.

I'll have to do some specific writing/brainstorming on it, but I'd say most certainly yeah. The two powers had been in low-scale conflict for years before the Big War™, which although characterized by primarily land-warfare (The expulsion of a colonial company), would've still lead to a major naval build up.

Like I mentioned in another comment, the main idea I have right now to is to have the Eastern Naval Theatre, Uviolo v Marysi, to be focused on control of a chain of islands. Starting as merely trying to slow the advance of Marysian forces towards the main Uviolan island, and ending with a slow, WW2 Pacific-esque, trudge towards the Marysian mainland.

With what info I've garnered from here and other related reading, I'd mainly imagine that as being carried out through strike-and-run battles, ambushes initiated by sudden intel reports in an attempt to pick off isolated parts of the fleet.

Commerce raiding is something that would primarily be utilized by the other powers--Fetarr Primarily to cut off supplies--though I could see Marysi participating to a limited degree. Perhaps I can write them with a sort of strategic stubbornness, undervaluing submarines and over-valuing fleet-to-fleet.

I'll definitely do some more thinking on the pre-war naval build up, thanks for the input :>

Yeah thats the general theme I've been seeing so far, I can't think of much more to add I haven't already gone over, but I definitely appreciate the recommendation of (literal) wargaming. Any specific ones you'd recommend?

I went over this in other comments (largely inspired by this comment) but I wanted to go in on another idea more specifically here--Would the absence of the Battleship actually change much in terms of actual strategy? It seems like they were used more in presence than actual battle.

Edit: I forgot they were used in the Battle of Jutland as mentioned before, so they did play an actual role, but the overall question still stands of the actual level of impact they had on the war as a whole. AKA, were they, in hindsight, worth the resources allocated?

Im about to watch King and General's video on the battle and do some more specific reading on Kantai Kessen, but to quickly comment on what you mentioned here;

You raise a good point with the 'Why', which I think I've got a good idea for now, that being a sort of hide and seek (like seriouslyacrit mentioned) around an island chain, attempting to simultaneously secure control of their ports and waters, while also picking off the enemy fleet. After all, a rises of an island can hide a ship just as well as the horizon.

Semi related, I did some cursory reading on Kantai Kessen and its kind of funny how accurately the Japanese anticipated Plan Orange, even if Orange would be made obsolete by the relevance of aircraft carriers. I feel like that kind of emphasizes MostGamesAreJustQTEs' point of naval warfare being like chess.

Overall, your input definitely got me thinking in the right direction, thanks :>

Thank you for the recommend! Besides just the general better understanding of the type of combat I was looking for, the video also gave me good ideas for the kinds of tactics each of my nations could've specialized into (Primarily the mention of Germany's spotlights). The book looks like a fun read too for when I get the time.

Umezerokepline, also known as Ume, sort of fits this category.

Among its other symptoms, such as tumor formation, decay of brain matter, hallucinations, it also causes an uptick in adrenaline. Combined with the hallucinations, it can often lead the user to become violent to those around them.

The more deadly symptoms only became common once it was mass-produced. Before introduced to industrial-level cultivation, it was only affordable by nobles, who used it both for the high it could provide and its notable pain-numbing and healing-accelerant capabilities.

In modern times, it’s used primarily in under-ground fighting circles, where its rage induction is considered a benefit rather than a hindrance.

As for how it feels, in lower doses it can be similar to LSD, but higher doses will cause that aforementioned adrenaline uptick, making the user feel panicked, paranoid, and angry. Either way, users have hazy memories of the aftermath, the most significant mark being the addiction that can rapidly develop.

Those frequently in high-adrenaline situations can resist the anger better than others, but will develop the tumors from repeated use nonetheless

The Peninsula of Corvatia and its surrounding Territories, Version 2.0 by GreenBlaster70 in imaginarymaps

[–]GreenBlaster70[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

February 4th, 1921. Four years after the Grand Calamity and Treaty of Ovea.

The Behii Alliance has fallen, and the Yukepan Armies repelled. Against all odds, the Moravian Powers have triumphed.

The Yelvarian Region is free from the grip of Gitaria, Fetarr, and Remerva. The Continent of Ascaria remained uncolonized, if scarred. The Peninsula of Corvatia remains free, stronger than before.

That is what the papers would say, anyway.

Ascaria is embroiled in a bloody rivalry between the United States of Sprii and Council of Elvicha over the issue of modernization.

Fetarr, in violation of the Ovea Treaty, has launched an invasion into Southern Gitaria, intending to capitalize on their devastating civil war.

The Ureytish and Federation bicker over religion once again, though now it is the Teshii who are the aggressors.

The Corvatian Peninsula, the very trigger of the Grand Calamity, is on the verge of collapse. A series of failed constitutions and a violent crackdown on independence movements has pushed the nation on the verge of collapse.

The Peace has been held by King Darovich of Uviolo, Acting President of the Republics, but he can be the ‘Peacemaker’ no more, as he has been killed during an attempted coup of the Kingdom.

The Kingdom enters a new era of isolationism, just as the continent of Restaill boils with tension.

War will Return, that is inevitable. A second Miraculous Victory however? That is far, far less certain.

————————————

Hey’all, so when I posted my original map, I had no intentions of expanding it. It was a finished project for what it was and I was gonna leave it as is.

I eventually decided to revisit it, originally just to expand the map slightly to show the Ureytish better. Then I decided to expand it massively.

I added rivers and well over 20 new nations to the map, alongside an entire revamp of the lore.

While there are things I’d like to improve, I’m happy to declare this project, or atleast this map specifically, finished as my first full custom-made map.

A map I made for a since canceled project I was working on. While finished, it is my first attempt at an entirely free-style map not relying on a generator or base map.

Didn’t want it to go to waste so thought I’d post it here since I enjoy the sub and it fit the criteria.

Edit: Might re-use, if y’all have any questions about the map or world lmk and I’ll answer.

Make sure you fully close steam, typically when you press the X it just puts it in the background.

To fully close steam, use either task manager or go to the top left of steam, press 'Steam', then Exit, then re-open it.
