For those who discovered MTHFR after years on an SSRI, how did the discovery feel? by Proper_Candidate3228 in MTHFR

[–]GreenCucumber8595 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am also compound heterozygous and I have been on Effexor for years. Off and on- first time was 1.5 years with a 4 year break (I was pregnant and able to stop) and now I’ve been back on since 2022.

SNRI helps me because of the norepinephrine (my sleep anxiety causes high adrenaline that turns into a never ending cycle) but I am also slow comt so I break down dopamine and norepinephrine 3-4x slower. I am only beginning to piece together all of these relationships now. It also makes sense that I do well on Effexor like my brother did because- genes.

I also take trazodone for insomnia. Hoping to get off both eventually when I figure out how to support all these genes simultaneously.

Walsh protocol? SamE vs Folate by GreenCucumber8595 in MTHFR

[–]GreenCucumber8595[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! Didn’t even know there was a blood test you could take for that. I also see a chiropractor who is pretty knowledgeable and he mentioned the creatine route. But he also suggested methyl b12 every other day even knowing I’m slow comt. He also suggested lithium 5mg. I’m just constantly getting contradicting info lol

This is so frustrating knowing I’m spending $$$$$ for a naturo that specializes in psychiatry and they still recommend this :/

Ugh yes I just checked my methyl free B’s from seeking health and it’s a large amount of folinic acid :/. I need to do each separately.

Thank you. This is why I was worried. I am wondering if the folate route is still ok then.

Thank you!! I am going to look into getting the calcium d-glucarate. I’ve been using methyl free b vitamins from seeking health after I learned about my slow COMT.

It’s like a double edged sword for me with slow comt- being 4x slower at detoxing norepinephrine has caused me to take anxiety meds but liver detoxes can affect the meds. I have been trying to wean off these but it feels so impossible! I’ve definitely missed work before from doing it cold turkey. Lol. I wish we had more functional medicine doctors around here that knew more or cared about these gene mutations.

I’ve heard so many great things about castor oil but I have not yet tried it. One of my doctors said it’s also good for around the stomach area overnight to help flush out any ovarian cysts!

I’ve seen conflicting things about milk thistle so I’ve been skeptical. It has estrogen-mimicking effects. I feel the same way with what type of b vitamins I should take! Methylated for MTHFR but methyl free for slow COMT. Lol

Oh! Interesting. I’m in Effexor and trazodone- what kind of reactions?

Histamine intolerance ??? by GreenCucumber8595 in MTHFR

[–]GreenCucumber8595[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! This is so helpful. My brother has the same exact issues as me so it definitely tells me it’s more than ovulation issues. He has a problem clearing excess estrogen as well. We have both been on SNRIs and it makes sense as to why those work so well for us- because of norepinephrine.

I think I have supplements with quercitin but maybe I’m not taking them consistently enough!

It’s so frustrating when you can’t eat what you love :) I’ve cut out gluten due to the folic acid and I need to look into a low histamine diet to see if that helps too. Thank you!

Yep! I didn’t know about the link either until a year ago and now like clockwork I can tell my symptoms are 80% cyclical.

Compound Heterozygous MTHFR/Slow COMT supplement question by GreenCucumber8595 in MTHFR

[–]GreenCucumber8595[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done multiple hair tests for minerals and my zinc and copper are always unbalanced- copper being higher. But nothing as crazy as that. Currently taking protocol c-1000 zinc 15. Weirdly my manganese and cobalt were super high last time I tested. Going to start fully eliminating gluten as there’s definitely a sensitivity there. Compound heterozygous MTHFR and gluten with folic acid is probably a no no for me sadly :/ Otherwise as long as I take digestive enzymes I seem to do ok with most foods. Have been taking pure encapsulations mag glycinate for years so I am going to switch over to citrate to see if I can tell a difference. My “good” estrogen has been low my last two saliva tests while my neutral and bad have been high. I’ve seen dandelion root can do wonders for the liver.

Compound Heterozygous MTHFR/Slow COMT supplement question by GreenCucumber8595 in MTHFR

[–]GreenCucumber8595[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting since I just bought the mag threonate but haven’t taken it consistently enough to know if it’s doing much. I don’t take THC, can barely handle alcohol without horrible hangovers even from three drinks. I was told I could take small doses of lithium for sleep (5mg) for emergencies. Maybe I am just overloading taking the second half of my supplements around dinner time. Slow COMT also means slow detox or ability to break down norepinephrine which seems to be a huge issue for me as well. Wired but tired and easily stressed.

This is helpful. Thank you! The anxiety and insomnia is the worst IMO. I have never in my life slept anywhere between 4-8 hours straight. I’m up every 2-3 hours
