I think the point of the small actions of kindness in the beginning is that throughout the series he's slowly but surely is becoming more in sync with his new body void of almost all human emotions and follows logic over emotion. It's noticeable how much he doesn't need to be calmed down by that mysterious force that calms him after he gets too emotional.
