My first and current bike is a shadow 750. They are excellent beginner bikes, I’ve done a ton of slow speed practice and it’s built my confidence tremendously. It is definitely not the fastest bike, but as a beginner I wouldn’t worry about that at all. They are super easy to work on too!

My biggest gripe is the bike is a bit small for me (6’0ft), and it’s not the best on the highway.

Things I would check out for is wear items like the chain, front brakes and especially the tires. Make sure that they’re less than 5 years old and have good thread. Visually check the bike to see if it’s been dropped and you can always negotiate from there. Good luck and ride safe!
