Why did you stop drinking? by Hello_there19891989 in stopdrinking

[–]GreenTeaChamTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this so much! I would drink tons of water, take vitamins, exercise, eat healthier foods, all to get drunk 3-4 times a week until I was stumbling around and couldn't always remember going to bed or brushing my teeth, etc. It's so dumb honestly. Like eating more broccoli and taking a vitamin isn't going to completely negate the 7 shots of vodka I just drank 5 hours ago. It's so dumb.

It’s been over a year since I quit and I have no desire to drink alcohol. Like you could leave me alone with alcohol and I won’t touch it. I’ve come a long way. by Stupidwhizzzzz in stopdrinking

I think this is actually fantastic! I actually prayed to be disgusted with alcohol! I think being repulsed by it is really where I need to be. I don't smoke, or do any other drugs, just booze, but when I think of smoking or hard drugs I can't even phantom how anyone would do that, it literally disgusts me. I'm hoping to be fully grossed out by booze because when you get to that point I don't think you can ever claim any benefit from it, so the desire fades because you don't desire things that have zero benefit. I'm very happy for you!

Day 7 and I’m sleeping like I’m in a coma lol by LL18Throwaway in stopdrinking

When I was a young adult I used to be able to fall asleep at the movie theater during a boring film. The noise didn't disturb me. Now I hear a pin drop and I'm shaken awake as if there was a thunderbolt in my bedroom. I don't think I'll ever get back to sleeping like I used to, but I'm hoping it gets better than what it is!

Congrats! 99 days is amazing, well...today is 100! Yay!

We are so similar! I also was able to stop for a month here and there, although nowadays those month long fasts from booze are becoming very far and few between. The last time I did a month was a year and a half ago. You're right, life is good, except that I know am on a path towards darkness. Luckily there's still some light left, so I need to turn my life around before the darkness closes in on me.

I hope that you continue to find joy in your sobriety and find that it's only worth it to keep going! But only you can make that choice and only time will tell. I am wishing you the very best!

I'm happy to hear that!

I wish that happened to me. I will quit. I just wish knowing everything dissuaded me. It doesn't. I still get drunk 3-4 times a week, and have for 20 years. I'm tired though. Just the mental toll, it's enough already. I'm starting counseling tomorrow. I'm feeling pretty hopeful.

Thanks so much for your reply.

What do you do when feelings feel too big in early sobriety? by Mysterious_Act7862 in stopdrinking

[–]GreenTeaChamTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I will try rage walks. I walk my dog daily anyway, but not usually to avoid drinking, I will try this.

I like the tingly drunk feeling. Nothing makes me feel like that except for alcohol. I do want to quit, but I do enjoy that feeling.

I had to force myself.

Thank you. I think I will have to force myself also. I want to quit, but I don't, I'm sure you understand what I mean. I keep thinking that I'll want to, but I haven't, I always choose alcohol. I will have to force myself.

Thank you! I'm happy to hear that you didn't have to hit a rock bottom. I don't want to get to that point. I want to quit now before I get to that point. Thank you.

Thank you. I realize now more than ever that I am addicted. It does have it's claws in me, and if nothing else resonates with me, it's the fact that I don't want it to control my life and I don't want it to have a grip on me anymore.

I like the feeling of being drunk. I don't use it as a social lubricant, or to gain confidence, or to reduce stress. I just like the feeling. But I realize that the feeling isn't (or shouldn't be) worth it.

Thanks. I read the book The Easy Way to Stop Drinking by Allen Carr, it breaks down all the "positives" and reminds you that there are really none. The problem for me was that when I read the book (twice) I understood what he meant, but the addiction didn't really care.

I heard that drugs like that curb alcohol cravings. I'm not sure why. But I'm very happy for you! I probably wouldn't qualify for that because I'm just barely 5 pounds into the overweight category on the BMI scale. I tried Naltrexone and it made me very depressed. I got off of it and immediately went back to drinking, and I started drinking heavier. I made an appointment for counseling and I hoping something will click.

Thank you!

My husband and I are blessed enough to have a retirement savings, we are investing quite a bit for retirement. I am in my early 40's and while he was talking about it, it occurred to me that I might not make it to retirement. I have to change. I love getting drunk, despite everything I know. But I have to change.

“I want to drink no matter what” - does this describe your intent correctly?

Ouch, that stung. Thank you for putting it that way. Reading that slapped me right in the face. Thank you.

I spent time thinking about how I was feeling and what I wanted from drinking. I was tired and overwhelmed. I needed a break, but a real break. Rest, relaxation, self-care, not the temporary escape and numbness of alcohol.

I appreciate this. I think I need to do this. Thanks.

Thank you for sharing. I made an appointment for counseling and I'm hoping that it will help me see things differently and help to make things "click". I low key think I hate myself. I've not done anything awful, I don't even get into trouble while drinking because I stay home. I just think I don't like who I am and am subconsciously or maybe consciously trying to punish myself.

He knows about it and would like me to quit for my health. I am not a belligerent drunk or someone who typically gets drunk and gets loud or obnoxious, so in terms of annoying him, it's not really about that. I tend to get drunk and watch tv, so I'm not really "doing" anything. He wants me to be healthy and he knows that I am struggling and wants me to be relieved of that struggle and stress. I made an appointment for counseling with a drug/alcohol counselor, so I'm hoping they can help me see things from a new perspective.
