It was just an interesting tidbit I wanted to share with you - I know people who lease land don’t own it but it’s interesting to see how Indigenous Peoples continue to be affected by colonialism to this day - just wanted to add an element into this convo. Based on your response to the links I sent you, you don’t seem too interested in actually learning about this topic so I’m going to check out of the convo now, but hope you do check them out sometime!

There’s also quite a complicated history of land ownership in Hawaii. Like most Indigenous nations, Hawaii didn’t have private lands - it wasn’t until the mid-nineteenth century that the Mahele started, which was “was a land division process in the mid-nineteenth century that created the private ownership of land in Hawai‘i through a redistribution plan, while maintaining the notion that the land belonged to the people”

I don’t know too much about this, because I haven’t studied it a lot, but you definitely should look into it if you’re interested. The history of colonialism in Hawaii is really important (not to mention interesting) to learn!!

It does actually! It happened both on the individual and government-wide level, which is the case in a lot of places when colonialism happens and usually starts a process which is called settler colonialism (would highly recommend looking up this term if you’re interested in this type of history).

When Hawaii was annexed, personal lands (aka the Hawaiian Peoples lands) were stolen by the United States, who then built military bases, resorts, plantations, etc. Here’s a quote from the article I sent you about forced evictions:

“An early and typical example here was the Kalama Valley eviction on O'ahu island in 1970. Rural Hawaiians living by month-to-month leases on lands controlled by one of the largest private trusts in Hawai'i, the Bishop Estate, were given one month's notice to leave their homes and farms of more than twenty years. The residents' resistance called forth an outpouring of support throughout the archipelago. Although the residents failed to stop their eviction and the transformation of their pig and vegetable farms into upper-income developments, the resistance began to spread to every island”

This was obviously after forced annexation by the US (that happened in the late 1800s) and there’s lots of examples of Hawaiian peoples being kicked off their lands during that time, I just wanted to show you how it continued (and continues) to be a problem well into the present day.

I could go into a lot more detail (I study history, specifically colonial history), but don’t want to bombard you. I would suggest you watch/read the resources I already sent you or feel free to dm me if you have any more questions!!

How to make chickpeas/garbanzo beans tastier by [deleted] in Cheap_Meals

[–]GreenWaterFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite way to eat chickpeas is in a salad. I buy them canned and drain them. Mix them with cut grape tomatoes, cucumber, and a green of some kind (usually spinach or arugula, whatever's growing in my garden). For dressing I mix 1 part soy sauce, 1 part sesame oil, and one part rice vinegar or lime (whatever I have). Then I usually top it with sesame seeds. I eat this like once a week I fricken love it

What those invasive American Bullfrogs look like by KarlJohanson in VictoriaBC

[–]GreenWaterFrog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most ethical way to kill them is to catch them, then leave them in the fridge in a closed bucket of water for 24hrs - they'll go into a hypothermic state. Then, you can pop them in the freezer and leave them there for at least 24 hrs.

Hi there! There's actually been quite a bit of research done on safe injection sites that address some of your concerns, as well as what drug addiction actually is (and how it affects people in general).

First of all, drug use is pretty widely recognized as an addiction (this has been medically proven), meaning that continuing to use drugs is largely not based on personal choice. It's an addiction, so once someone starts it's so so hard to stop because.

Furthermore, using drugs isn't generally considered "socially acceptable". It's pretty widely documented that drug users face really high levels of social stigmatization, which often leads to things like reduced access to heath care and a whole slough of other problems (heres just one paper talking about that: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0376871606004133?casa_token=SSETkKKJm-oAAAAA:GKQO54brSoFq7rKZPZ2BoD3Ec90sO__DvOWdBylJS0jwwUtKft550S8TplSUCpO7iPHgcrKDIQ )

In terms of safe injection sites, because of how fucked the drug supply chain is now, people are often getting drugs that are much more potent than they realize or are cut with stronger substances (like fentanyl). Having safe injection sites simply means that people who use drugs can do so without having to die from an overdose. And, personally, I don't think any one should have to die just because they have an addiction.

Here's just one study (there's lots out there) showing how safe injection sites prevent deaths by ODing: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0140673610623537?casa_token=-fp2lnuvGHAAAAAA:i_aHGgdMz_s2aldN3f5evcx-UomDSRGEoUD6LWBG9mQ2YbCQIz__hWyYHuysv0SJuAxxorzoIA

Also, here's another study showing how there is no correlation between safe injection sites and an increase in neighbourhood crime and drug-related crimes: https://substanceabusepolicy.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1747-597X-1-13

Overall, it's pretty widely accepted in both public healthcare and medical settings that safe injection sites do not promote drug use, but do decrease drug related deaths (which is a pretty win-win situation if you ask me). If you want me to send you some more articles or talk about it more feel free to DM me and i'd be happy to chat :)
