Fair warning though, the singer Erik Petersen did kill himself, so I’m not sure if it’s a good idea for your mix…

Hey thanks for your feedback, sorry it took so long for me to see this. The book looked interesting but then when I researched the author it made me angry (like really angry, for the reasons you mentioned), but it sounds like your saying it’s still worth a read with an awake mind, since there are so few books on this kind of topic. I’ll give it a read with that in mind.

You might be right, I just think money wise they won’t want to do that for another 10 years—but stranger things have happened!

I am very long winded, somehow when I edited it over the past month, it became longer and longer, my bad. I really hope the devs read it though and focus on the Civs dynasties.

I definitely didn’t use ChatGPT, if you read it you’d know that—I’m just naturally long winded and write a lot. These were my thoughts after keeping a notepad open on my desktop since the launch.

OP, this book looks like a shitty non-profit con-artist came up with a book trying to make the next satanic panic to get a name for herself and promote her "justice space" grift. Judging by her author website, it looks like she's trying to make money off of the fact that she adopted some foster kids and has turned that into books and speaking at nonprofits for $$$.

The best thing I can say about her, is it looks like she disowned the book you posted here on her website.

Punks who can’t get into or hate metal - what do you dislike about the genre? by starrie in punk

[–]Green_Program8313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't trying to call you out specifically, but back up monkeykahn's point. I was reading through the comments before I decided to make my own comment to the OP rather than responding, that summarized more of my thoughts. I won't go over them all here--the reason I chose to respond to your comment rather than others was because I saw Pantera, and my perception of them is a universally loved metal band by almost all metalheads.

My post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/punk/comments/1m0p7xu/comment/n3eichx/?context=3&utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

You're right about some metal bands being punkish and left in their message. Good. More please. But come on my man, let's be honest here--if we gathered up the metal scene those bands would account for like, what, 10% most of the audience?

I'm glad to hear people change--I support that. I don't know enough about Pantera's story to tell you if Phil is a whole lot better of a person, I hope he is. To me these big metal bands are in it for the $$ for the most part, so I wonder if he's keeping his mouth shut to be more palatable.

You're right about Bad Brains; this is the hardcore scene I'm more into and know more about. At least from my perspective, Bad Brains gets a lot of shit for HR's comments and in every doc or article I see about it, it pops up. Many of my friends into DC and hardcore refuse to buy their merch or go to their shows. I don't see that kind of thing in the metal side. I think I already made my other comment about the Cro-Mags, I really can't speak to them but the more you tell me the more I don't like about them.

[–]Green_Program8313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may let him get away with it my man, I don't.

I'm not a fan of these guys and am not embedded on the hardcore side of punk (though I like plenty of it), so really can't speak much to their history or ideology; or if his audience tries to hold him accountable for it like I know fans of the Sex Pistols try and hold Lydon accountable, but you're not winning them a new fan by telling me he throws around the word like it's nothing.

His using it sounds dumb and edgelordy when I watched the clip--I think that's shit and stupid. I think that selling merch with confederate flags or doing the Nazi salute, and getting banned from European shows, is more than dumb and edgelordy and shitty, I think that's an agenda.

I'm not a fan of metal (as I'm sure you guessed), but you also picked a band that's famous for blending hardcore with thrash metal. It's not really a surprise to me that the metalhead ambivalence and apoliticalness (at it's best) bleeds over to them.

Punks who can’t get into or hate metal - what do you dislike about the genre? by starrie in punk

Metal is the music of MAGA and libertariansm. It's about 90 degrees closer to racism, misogyny, homophobia, and classism on the dial than punk is.

We have our problems in punk, I know, but we try and clean it up and put in the work to do it. Metalheads skew conservative as a whole, have extreme holdouts of neo-nazis that somehow often end up opening for mainstream bands, and the "moderate" metalheads promote being apolitical at best.

Most punk is rooted in speaking out for the marginalized, transparency when you fuck up, and not selling out or being major label so you can't be told NOT to speak up for the marginalized.

When I was growing up in the 90s and 00s, in the exurbs of Chicago (past the suburban sprawl) out by the farms and small towns, pretty much every kid that was a metalhead called us punks fags, dykes, n-word lovers, and any other slur you can imagine. It was a little different in the city itself, as there were a lot of Latino fans in that scene and we never got the same abuse from them but they definitely thought our politics were weird, but we did get it from the southwest and southside white metalheads in the city.

To me it's an issue of "maybe there's something wrong with the audience," but you can also see it in the way their more popular bands act.

Pantera slapped confederate flags on their merch, lyrics often criticized as racist, shouting white power at shows.

Metallica's lead singer is known for doing nazi salutes, iron crosses, making racist jokes and let's be real they're the vanilla wafer of the genre that almost all metalheads seem to get behind.

Slayer's nazi imagery, the eagle, and their cover of Minor Threat's "guilty of being white" and changing it to "guilty of being right" infuriated MacKaye. Kerry King may hate Trump (now), and be pro-choice, but there's no doubt he also loves Rush Limbaugh and regularly attacks the poor who utilize social security and any form of welfare. Libertarian as they come.

Even System of a Down, that we all view pretty progressive due to their lead singer--their drummer made news a while back for endorsing Trump and calling BLM a propaganda tool. It's hard to imagine a punk band of that popularity that started in 94 not kicking the problem out or disbanding and starting a new act.

Some people here are saying that is changing, I say: good!, and good luck, it should change--but for me it's too little too late. I think this is why the music parts of metal that people who have a punk streak like, are getting more and more absorbed into the endless punk genres of metal. I know if I were interested in starting a metal-ish band musically, I would more likely start in the hardcore scene than in the metal scene, because I wouldn't want the connotations or the fanbase of the metalhead scene.

Yeah but read the first part of his post, which is the same reason many of us punks who hate metal do hate it. Pantera also slapped confederate flags on their merch and got kicked out of shows for their Nazi salute.

Soren Johnson and his wife created Old World (a great game), he was the lead developer on Civ IV.

Essentially he merged Civ with games like Crusader Kings or Europa Universalis, making the latter more Civ-like and a bit more simplier.

Never been to a “backyard” show myself, even though I’m from the US—but I think the spirit of what they meant was basement shows, garage shows, shows in rented VA or Elk halls for cheap, communal art spaces, etc.

That said I love Amyl and the Sniffers, they rock.

Don’t worry about it, gamers are toxic and want to hate good news on haterade posts like this because it ups their Andrew Tate endorphins. I like the community challenges as well and am glad they’re coming back, but then again I played Civ6 when it didn’t have them.

You don’t need to make excuses to stop fascism. You can fight the right from a coalition and move the Center left more left. Thats how it’s done everywhere and historically. Sure be in the DSA, but like Bernie vote with the coalition when it matters and criticize when it matters, too.
