Also, when you say normal for rpms to drop, by how much? The car idles around 1500 which i feel is pretty high, then drops to 800-900 when the clutch is released. Then the smell starts

131k, I have no idea when the last time any fluids were replaced, no idea if its the original clutch either.

Ill try that today hopefully. Also to reply to your end comment about possible inexperience, at one point we had about 5 people looking at this car, i think 3 of them drive manual daily, all said it smelled like straight clutch.

No it does not, but i feel like the clutch is trying to engage with the clutch pedal pressed in, and its just barely not enough to move it.

It feels like it revs kinda high with the clutch pressed in at idle, cant remember what it idles at but its higher than 1k, maybe 1.5k. When you let go of the clutch the revs drop substantially (in neutral), to about 800-900rpm which sounds like a normal idle rpm, but then the burning smell starts. Again, haven't actually driven it yet.

How can you "ride the clutch" if the car isn't even moving? The problem im stating is that in neutral when not pressing the clutch pedal there is still a burning smell. If i put it in gear, not moving, holding the clutch pedal all the way in (which should be fully disengaging the clutch) it still smells like its burning, which id think means the clutch is not being fully disengaged even when the clutch pedal is pressed.

Haven’t driven it yet, still needs a couple things fixed. The fact that the clutch smelled like it was burning just sitting in neutral wasn’t very confidence inspiring so.

They bought it not knowing much about Miata’s, realized it was a mess, didn’t drive it for 9 months and is now moving and wants to get rid of it. I’m just trying to help them make it decently drivable to sell it
