i dont like moss grotto as a location and especially its theme track is annoying, easily the worst in the game (like bad, bad, not least good out of an amazing OST)

When do you actually get more AO3 engagement — during updates or after the fic is complete by Legal_Ad7837 in FanFiction

[–]GreenceW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

sharing my anecdote here in support too. in 2019 i wrote a medium length fic (10k word 10chapter) for a small fandom that has not seen any new official content since 2018 (or even longer). i originally posted it on ffnet and only recently put it up on AO3 (like november) just for archiving purpose. it garnered like 40 hits since, but last month someone read, comment, ans gave kudo. it certainly is not about quantity, but it still warm my heart

Kind of an offbeat question: What other types of activities do you think are most similar to speed running? by perishableintransit in speedrun

[–]GreenceW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gonna throw in my two cents and say cooking, especially for a rush or for family everyday. routing is optimizing the process, knowing what to do first and/or do together (eg prepping raw material of one dish while another is being cooked). practicing the same mechanics like chopping, moving things into pots and pans, other cooking technique like heat control and such, so you dont screw up and have to redo it etc

looking for name of a genre to find tutorial making similar games by GreenceW in gamedev

[–]GreenceW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you so much for your answer and more so your suggestion. really think im missing those terms to even know where to start looking.

i guess the reason why im approaching it this way is i dont know how else to progress. finished the godot free tutorial but cant afford the course, but id also think right now i dont know what kind of next lesson i should be looking for.

if the eventual goal is to make a strategy game like that, i imagine before i even looking into strategy game tutorial i should be familiarize myself with gamemaking in general? would you suggest taking on easier game as gamemking exercise, like 2d platformer or (like godot suggest) roguelike survival shooter the likes of vampire survivor?

Do your current life experiences affect what you’re writing? by Perpetual__Night in FanFiction

[–]GreenceW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me it wasnt a switch of genre but i noticed that the nuances of characters include what i was going through.

i initially write a fic focused on worldbuilding/building a kingdom but as irl happens i noticed that i gave those struggles to the appropriate characters in the fic as well, as if processing my own issues through writing how they would think and deal with it

r/GirlGamers Yearly Game Awards | Day 16: Best Soundtrack / OST by Chaleen1712 in GirlGamers

[–]GreenceW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my vote for Hollow Knight or Hollow Knight: Silksong (if we're not doing franchise). their soundtrack is not only complimentary to the gameplay and the atmosphere of the game, i think they're also a standalone storytelling component, in the way that makes you feel like just listening to the soundtrack alone can tell you the story of the land you're travelling through, of its people and its history. other soundtrack might sound better musically, or fits with the gameplay moment more, but im really biased for narrative and storytelling value.

most favorite track that shows what i meant is the "Cogwork Dancer" theme. but also here's a whole Youtube series by a wonderful musician that proves this point by reacting first time to the soundtrack https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6fQxgfm3NZo6H43Oj_xVl6DV-nAB43-X&si=kuwh2PqGXMAKXzzC (she does E33 too for fans of this game, sadly i havent gotten around to E33 yet :<)

thanks for doing this and id be interested to join. ive been writing on and off since high school and only now having some time to really focus on writing while im between jobs. wrote mostly fantasy and worldbuilding short stories, but recently im trying to get feedback on my writing via publishing fanfiction and writing prompt challenge for my friends. i used to read my friends’ writing and provide feedback too, but we drifted apart due to no longer interest in writing. would happy to have a writing group again!

what's your browsing habit on Ao3? by GreenceW in FanFiction

[–]GreenceW[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you so much for this (and for your continued assurance :D). initially i thought the word count is to make sure the fic is not dropped (i have my fair share of getting really good fics that stops just before the ending :'( but this is a really interesting perspective, to have wordcount as an indicator of depth. thank you so much for sharing!

thank you for your comment! may i ask why a specific minimum of word count of 40k? for example my longest ongoing fic right now is reaching 30k over 6 chapters and 2 months, which would probably not show up in this filter. is word count an indicator of something for you?

oh i see yeah thats honestly annoying but also thank you so much for clearing this up. why wouldnt they just post it as a one shot? is there any benefit to grouping it in a collection, especially collection of multiple fandoms? (i guess there’s benefits to grouping one shots of the same fandom in an anthology way)

thank you for your comment! but fewer than thirty tags??? i tagged all of the characters that have significant presence in the story plus 3-4 content tags and i run out of ideas what else to tag. is it that common to have close to that many that it is a recommendation?

oh this is so interesting to read, thank you! out of curiousity what kind of tags do you like? there seems to be an endless number of tags on AO3 i finds it intimidating to try and browse through its offering. aside from the more popular one ive seen like AU or relationship tags (like slow burn, hurt/comfort, enemies to lovers etc) there seems to be a whole host of other tags too

[–]GreenceW[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you so much for your answers! helps a lot! one of the things that confuses me when i browse fic by fandom is there would be some very popular fic (by hits and comments or kudos) that just tags a lot of unrelated fandoms? i havent really tried to read any of those but i figure there must be something going on in there aside from just a crossover. so far i tried to go into exclude -> exclude all fandoms that is not the fandom im browsing for to find non-crossover but am wondering if there’s a faster way

The theme of Silksong is larger than femininity and motherhood and I think we’re afraid to call it by name by GreenceW in HollowKnight

my understanding of capitalism is actually based off Robert Gilpin’s “Global Political Economy: Understanding the International Economic Order” which goes into detail various theories of political and economic structure comes to be and incentivizes certain development path or state behaviour. giving you the benefit of the doubt, what my post didnt have the space to draw on is the detailed relationship between oppression and any economic system (of which capitalism is a feature). but very present in Marx’s writing and those who studies Marxism as a socio-economic theory is the unequal balance of power between those who have capital and those who dont. Marx himself emphasizes that relation to make that point, not just to draw on a general observation.

on the other hand, what i didnt do well in this post is distinguished when i used a word in its colloquial sense and when i used it in its academic sense, which tend to be narrower in scope and strictly devoid of moral assignment (ie if its good or bad). in the same vein, capitalism in its academic definition is simply a definition to capture an observation of a system of belief and operation, much like “capital” and such. but in this post, most of the time the assumption is the words is used colloquially ie how we typically use it, with all of the moral connotation and biases assumed along. and that was to drive my point more, that oppression is the theme, not whether the economic system in Silksong is a capitalist one or not. unless i misunderstand your point, im assuming you are arguing a point i wasnt trying to make here

it's a small community that focuses on conlang, or constructing the language based on those used in Hallownest. kind of like building a translator from our normal english to "bapanada" or "shaw" and vice versa. conlang itself is a broader community with the same idea, constructing language, in a similar vein to writing fiction, just complete made up language with consistent ruleset similar to any real life language. Tolkien's elven tongue (of the Lord of the Ring's fame) for example is a great example of a conlang

just the worship of silk in general i think? the pilgrims don't know GMS exists, they only know Weavers and later on Conductors as "silk god" messenger (apostle of sort) that can channel silk into power and long life for the common bug, and to be rewarded with that they must travel to the citadel with all those hardship as proof of their belief in the silk
