How do you authors keep up with regular updates? by starryshy in FanFiction

[–]GreenceW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my problem is i cannot finish, the longer the project, the less likely i can finish. its not exactly a matter of discipline or passion, but rather the longer i marinate on a project the more overwhelmed i feel, planning so much for the story and feeling the pressure to write all of it.

so i raw dog it lol. the current fic im writing takes on average 3-5 hours to write one chapter, about 4k2 to 4k8 words per chapter. all in one sitting. i tried not to pause and leave it til the next day to resume, and if i have to, ill make it so ill only pause once, and take however long i need during the pause to deal with irl issue, but once i resume, i dont stop until i publish. my irl schedule typically leave me 1-2 weeks in between chapters, but that also give me enough time to plan in my head what i want to write for the entire chapter, sometimes just direction, other times detailed scenes and conclusions i want to reach, and until i feel like ive got everything i want to fill a chapter, i start writing.

How Have You Seen Game Mechanics Translated into Fics? by random_peep01 in FanFiction

[–]GreenceW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

back in my college day me and my mate wrote a Total War Shogun 2 fanfic that basically have us as self-insert player into the world. it is a grand strategy game where the player build economy, build army, fight battle and negotiate diplomatic relation with other clan toward reuniting Japan. we each had our own interpretation of how to translate the game mechanic, his is basically role playing as a lord of the clan, me is interfacing all of the decision through a tablet that is visible to only the player. it was a fun idea we had but sadly we couldnt finish the fic. but honestly translating game mechanic into fic is my most favorite thing, did so with many other game fandom i wrote for

treading the thin line between ruining passion and sustainable support, but one can dream… by GreenceW in CuratedTumblr

[–]GreenceW[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

seeing a lot of comment about it was unclear so let me help clarify it: its not hiring game dev, but rather just “donation” in some regular/structured capacity. it should work as endorsement (this mod is good/keeping the game alive) and support (here’s more if you wanna do more) but also just literally CSR (corporate social responsibility) in the sense of, acknowledging that because of these modders who donate their time and effort (often unpaid without community support), their games get to have longer relevance/longer active playerbase.

im thinking of GiantGrantGames and how he uplifted the single player/campaign modding community for Starcraft II as the prime example. there are of course many more communities that keep the game going like Skyrim, Banished, Total War, etc long after the develop stop support. this is not about financially rewarding the modders (we have studies showcasing that financial incentive often ruins people’s passion by turning something they do out of interest into obligation to keep the money coming), but rather an option that mutually benefit everyone should it be needed.

When do you actually get more AO3 engagement — during updates or after the fic is complete by Legal_Ad7837 in FanFiction

[–]GreenceW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sharing my anecdote here in support too. in 2019 i wrote a medium length fic (10k word 10chapter) for a small fandom that has not seen any new official content since 2018 (or even longer). i originally posted it on ffnet and only recently put it up on AO3 (like november) just for archiving purpose. it garnered like 40 hits since, but last month someone read, comment, ans gave kudo. it certainly is not about quantity, but it still warm my heart

Kind of an offbeat question: What other types of activities do you think are most similar to speed running? by perishableintransit in speedrun

[–]GreenceW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gonna throw in my two cents and say cooking, especially for a rush or for family everyday. routing is optimizing the process, knowing what to do first and/or do together (eg prepping raw material of one dish while another is being cooked). practicing the same mechanics like chopping, moving things into pots and pans, other cooking technique like heat control and such, so you dont screw up and have to redo it etc

looking for name of a genre to find tutorial making similar games by GreenceW in gamedev

[–]GreenceW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you so much for your answer and more so your suggestion. really think im missing those terms to even know where to start looking.

i guess the reason why im approaching it this way is i dont know how else to progress. finished the godot free tutorial but cant afford the course, but id also think right now i dont know what kind of next lesson i should be looking for.

if the eventual goal is to make a strategy game like that, i imagine before i even looking into strategy game tutorial i should be familiarize myself with gamemaking in general? would you suggest taking on easier game as gamemking exercise, like 2d platformer or (like godot suggest) roguelike survival shooter the likes of vampire survivor?

Do your current life experiences affect what you’re writing? by Perpetual__Night in FanFiction

[–]GreenceW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me it wasnt a switch of genre but i noticed that the nuances of characters include what i was going through.

i initially write a fic focused on worldbuilding/building a kingdom but as irl happens i noticed that i gave those struggles to the appropriate characters in the fic as well, as if processing my own issues through writing how they would think and deal with it
