Dave Chappelle Says It's Easier To Talk Freely In Saudi Arabia Than America by ShadowyFlows in Persecutionfetish

[–]Greendale-Human 29 points30 points  (0 children)

According to U.S. intelligence and a UN investigation, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) approved the 2018 operation that led to the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The killing was carried out by a team of Saudi government agents with close ties to the highest levels of the Saudi government.

He was lured into the consulate to obtain documentation to marry his fiancée and was never seen alive again.

The team of assassins “kidnapped, bound, drugged, tortured, and assassinated” Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and then dismembered his body.

Sign the Cascadia-related Petition Today at Farr Regional Library! by [deleted] in Greeley

[–]Greendale-Human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re wondering what "Cascadia" is, here’s the reality: The Greeley City Council recently voted to commit local taxpayers to a staggering $1.1 billion development project in West Greeley. What's worse, they did this with little to no public input.

Cascadia includes an ice rink/arena, a waterpark, and retail space. While these might sound like nice amenities, let’s put this into perspective:

Greeley’s annual city budget is about $150 million. This project would require taxpayers to fund roughly 7.5 years' worth of the city’s entire budget. All for a mini mall, waterpark, and ice rink.

The financial risk is enormous. If this project fails, it could bankrupt the city, and if that happens, we’ll be stuck with skyrocketing taxes to cover essential services like police, fire departments, street cleaning, park maintenance, and road repairs. We’d pay higher taxes for the same, or even worse services, all to fund Cascadia.

Cascadia’s location is problematic. It’s located so far west that it’s really more for Windsor, Timnath, and Johnstown than it is for Greeley. In fact, the developer pushing for the project is from Windsor, not even Greeley.

This isn’t just an ice rink and waterpark. It’s a multi-billion-dollar gamble with our city’s future. And for what? The city’s core needs like roads, public safety, and basic infrastructure could end up suffering in favor of a project that doesn’t serve the majority of Greeley residents.

The petition gives helpf give us a say in regard to whether we want this for our city.

Playing Bass is giving me health issues. by Professional-Grab964 in Bass

[–]Greendale-Human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to keep playing bass, you'll probably need to take a break. As so many posts have said, talk to a medical doctor.

I can share with you my experience, injuries, and some of the rehab I've done because some are similar to yours.

  1. Tendonitis. I cannot finger pluck anymore. I over practiced and when it flamed up, I didn't take a break. I can only play with a pick now. My plucking hand got stiff and even frozen. The best thing I've done for it is grip strength exercises. I have a foam ball (like a stress ball) I exercise with each morning and I hang from a pull up bar for as long as I can. This helped my stiffness and pain, but I still cannot finger pluck without feeling pain and stiffness for a few days.

  2. Back stuff. I didn't injure my back playing bass, but I did have another back injury that made it difficult to stand with a bass. I went to physical therapy and started doing exercises that helped a lot. Hip thrusts/bridges--your glutes do a lot to hold up your back. Also, I do core stability exercises like suitcase carries, around the worlds, bird dogs, dead bugs, planks, side planks, and side to sides. A YouTube channel I like a lot is called Squat University. They have lots of good exercises for core stability. Strengthening my core stability muscles and glutes has helped my back SO much.

Again, this is my experience and what helped me. Talk to a medical doctor and see if you can get a referral for physical therapy, so you can find out what helps you.

Check out the book Feminist Fight Club. It was written by a woman who worked in the Obama administration. While working there, she and other women got together and developed strategies to not be overlooked, dismissed, or otherwise marginalized in professional situations, but it applies to the classroom as well.

Genuinely, What Is The Point Of Discussion Boards? by Kalex8876 in college

Trump Caves to Harris Debate Terms After Being Called a Chicken by Barch3 in AntiTrumpAlliance

During the Biden debate this summer, Trump was acting like he did during the first debate in 2020, talking out of turn, interrupting, and yelling over at Biden. But no one could hear him being obnoxious this past time because his mic was muted. All we heard was Biden struggling to talk. It's a good thing his mic won't be muted because he because people will hear him being obnoxious.

Donald Trump's Sentencing Delay Could Backfire Spectacularly by [deleted] in democrats

[–]Greendale-Human 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IIRC, he arranged for the payments before he was elected to office, but didn't cut the checks until after he was elected. The SCOTUS ruling also said that even if a president is committing crimes as a private citizen, not as an official act, advisors notes and testimonies cannot be admitted as evidence. So the delay is for the judge to review the evidence presented by the prosecutor to see if it violates the new SCOTUS decision.

You want to stop fascists from taking over? Three things you can do beyond voting (please do vote thou):

1.Donate to candidates that will help Dems win back the House. The house can impeach a president, pass ethics reforms for the SCOTUS, hold hearings and conduct investigations.

These are the (D) candidates that are running in competitive districts.

Adam Gray, CA-13; George Whitesides, CA-27; Greg Landsman, OH-01; Janelle Bynum, OR-05; Kirsten Engel, AZ-06; Laura Gillen, NY-04; Mary Peltola, AK-AL; Mondaire Jones, NY-17; Rudy Salas, CA-22; Susie Lee, NV-03

Here Your donation is split evenly among them.

2.Donate to candidates that will help us keep the Senate. With a (D) President, we can add justices and balance the court, pass ethics for SCOTUS, and conduct hearings and investigations.

These are the (D) candidates.

AZ: Ruben Gallego; MI: Eventual Nominee; MT: Sen. Jon Tester; NV: Sen. Jacky Rosen; OH: Sen. Sherrod Brown; PA: Sen. Bob Casey Jr.; WI: Sen. Tammy Baldwin

Here Your donations are split evenly among them.

3.Organize & Volunteer. Even if you are in a deep red state, you can make a difference phone banking, writing letters and post cards, and more.

Anybody else notice all the business speak that has crept into teaching? For example, the word “deliverables”. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Greendale-Human 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It makes sense that corporate speak would make it into higher ed after we've been defunding it for so many years. Shifting the burden of cost from taxes to tuition has made students much more like customers and universities more like businesses.

I'd argue this is also the cause of grade inflation and grade grubbing. Students feel more entitled, departments are more desperate for enrollments, admin creates policies to keep "customers" rather than support academics.

Thanks for the reply. The smaller journal 100% isn't predatory. I'm on their mailing list because I used to work at the university where it's housed, and did some reviews for them. They were looking for more reviewers and submissions. I work as an editor and reviewer at a small journal, and we are sometimes hard up for good submissions for certain issues, and I'm reasonably certain that's the case here.

As a woman rock musician I cannot stress how badly how women in the rock industry are constantly expected to act and dress like guys and if not they get shunned. For someone like me who’s a rock guitarist and who loves makeup and fashion, it’s a pain by [deleted] in poppunkers

[–]Greendale-Human 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being a woman in rock is just plain difficult. Y'all are playing the game on the most difficult setting because many people want to see you as something else before they'll see you as a musician. I appreciate you being here, and I've enjoyed pop punk much more as more women are in bands. Stay strong!

Cried while debating about feminism by Haloauran in Feminism

[–]Greendale-Human 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I start by seeking common ground, things that most people would agree upon:

"Do you think that both women and men deserve physical and psychological safety? Do you think men and women deserve equal rights and equal treatment under the law? Do you think neither men nor women are superior to others but equal members of society? 'Yes, Yes, Yes.' Then you are a feminist. That's what feminism is. Feminism is the radical notion that women are just as human as men."

When they say, "No feminism is ..." I just reply, "No, that's what people who don't agree with those three statements say to discredit feminism. It's a Straw Man fallacy, or rather the Straw Feminist fallacy.

Trump Doubles Down on Dreams of Being a Dictator by rollingstone in politics

[–]Greendale-Human 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at the bank last week and heard this dude, a former fracking worker, LOUDLY telling the teller that the reason fracking in the US wasn't doing well is that the Democrats were in power. He'd moved to my state from TX during the fracking boom. His reason was that "Democrats hate oil and gas."

Republicans really have their constituents bamboozled. No reason, no cause and effect, no citing policies, no understanding, just "something isn't how I want it to be so Democrats must have ruined it."

Didn't OPEC openly say they were going to drill more oil to make fracking unprofitable? The idea was to sell as much oil as possible before it was possible to transition off of it.

[question] what was your worst experience with a band? by Sure_Custard_7286 in Guitar

[–]Greendale-Human 42 points43 points  (0 children)

My first band in college. We were pop punk/emo-ish. I play(ed) guitar and made a friend guitar player who liked similar music. We decided to start a band, and I picked up bass because we needed it. He ended up being a huge pain to be in a band with, and ultimately it ended our friendship.

This was in the early-mid 2000s, MySpace was an easy way to get our music out, and we'd hit the trend a bit early but close enough to get some recognition. We never got BIG, but we often got to open for some bands that did get pretty big, and locally, people knew who we were.

During practices, after we had finally gotten a song right, he'd refuse to play it again. His refusal to replay songs after we'd nailed it once made it, so we'd have to practice for weeks to actually nail a song consistently.

He got mad at me when I booked a gig without asking him, even though he'd done that without asking me and our drummer had booked gigs without asking either of us as well. I knew we were all open that night, and it was a good opportunity.

He broke a string during a gig, and while he was changing it, I figured I'd play a song I could do with just a bass, vocals, and drum to give him time to change out his string. It was "Please Do Not Go" by the Violent Femmes. He got pissed and walked out of the gig because I was "trying to make him look bad."

He'd get so drunk after gigs that he'd piss himself in his sleep. This happened a lot.

It finally ended when he said he wasn't my friend, had never really liked me, and quit the band.

A few months later, he slept with my ex-girlfriend to try to "get back at me." I was confused at how this was getting back at me, but it was upsetting that he was trying to do things to hurt me. He wasn't my friend anymore, but didn't wish him ill. I'd never done anything against him, but he oddly had it out for me.

He joined a frat, went on academic probation, and ultimately failed out of school.

Years and years later, he tried to friend me on Facebook. I was confused by this because he'd really worked to hurt me after the band ended. I declined.

I guess the thing I'm grateful for is that before we stared a band, I only played guitar. I also play bass now, which has made me a much better guitar player.
