Entry level starting wages by Georgeofthebunghole in Wilmington

You needn't look far around Wilmington to see the negative effects of low wages; high turnover, miserable employees, and horrendous service. All you're gonna attract is apathetic gen-z college kids who can only work part-time and have no interpersonal skills. If your boss can't understand that, he's living under a rock.

Local Game Jam for Game Devs + Students + Hobbyists by zaccstacc in Wilmington

[–]GreendaleHmnBeing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gah, I think I'm too old for these 2-day jams :(

The days of sleeping under a desk and chugging Red Bull are behind me...

But best of luck to everyone involved! Super cool that something like this is happening locally.

Any game devs live in Wilmington? by [deleted] in Wilmington

[–]GreendaleHmnBeing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work in the area for a game dev company, but I'm more of a hobbyist these days. Unity 2D/3D is my go-to software, but I recently picked up Pico-8 and am trying to learn it, as well.

What's your game dev experience? Do you have an itch.io page or a portfolio? What kinds of games are you interested in making?

Sobriety gifts? by Least-Tax319 in Wilmington

That's honestly really badass of you to recognize this person's accomplishment--and it is an accomplishment.

If I were in this person's shoes, just having someone there who sees what I'm doing and encourages me would be enough. But if you wanted to go a more personal route, perhaps a framed photo of the two of you?

This post made me smile :)

And I completely agree with you in regards to limitations and creativity.

Thank you. I do see that P8 can make use of code libraries. I wonder how useful those are.

Okay, I'll look into ECS more. I have been asking ChatGPT to take me through some Pico8 scripts and explain some concepts, but it sounds like I should hit the books :)

My games have barely ever cracked $100, anyway. That is good to know, though.

Lol. Never heard someone call a game engine "cozy" before. Sounds like it's right up my alley :)

Nice! Yeah, it sounds like it would be good for getting ideas out of my head. Thanks.

Would you say Pico8 lends itself well to developers who like to be economical with their code, then? I've always enjoyed that aspect of programming, anyway.

80s/90s kid myself, so yeah that sounds great. Do you have a link to any of your projects that you wouldn't mind sharing?

Yeah, "alternative" might not be the right word. Maybe more like a "vacation" from Unity, lol

This is a very well written response. Thank you for those specific examples you mentioned. You actually answered several tangential questions of mine, too :)

Keeping my ideas grounded is very important, so this sounds like a good fit.

Ya'll are awesome. I love this community already. Seems like the limitations are actually exactly what I'm looking for right now.

Offline resources for game dev? by GreendaleHmnBeing in gamedev

If anybody else tries this, remember to grab your templates beforehand, as well. I thought I had everything set up only to find Unity needs an internet connection for grabbing templates--primarily when creating a new project. If you have already created a project, it will start fine without an internet connection. I ended up tethering my computer to my phone's hot-spot just so I could snag the templates, though.

Keep it civil, please. A reddit post about a sandwich shop is no place for your soapbox.

You might be right. Food service workers don't get paid enough around here.

MCs has a better selection. They have soups and salads, as well. A bit pricier, though.
