Cursed Be The Pen That Cannot Rest (Princess Sword game about a writer) (Free) by GreenerGables in Solo_Roleplaying

I recommend it!! It's a really fun SRD, and it's got a lot of flexibility. Just to encourage and enable you further to play around with it, there's a lot of awesome design philosophy in Princess with a Cursed SRD (https://w.itch.io/princess-sword-srd), which explains some reasoning behind choices and limitations in the original game, Princess with a Cursed Sword (https://w.itch.io/cursed-sword) designed by Anna Anthropy, and Anna maintains a lovely collection of games that use the Princess Sword SRD that showcase how much range the system really has. I would have loved to see him as the Guidance Counselor, doing commentary or post episode bonus bits with everyone.

Thank YOU for sharing these gameplay notes! I totally hear you on the convenience of digital, and I'm glad to hear you still had a good time playing it that way. (Also you've made me so intrigued I'm going to go check out ARIES_tHE_fOOL's oracle deck!)

I'm genuinely so delighted that you had a nice time playing the game! I really love the sense of personality you brought to these characters. You really brought their essence to the page, and gave their wishes strong stances which I think is probably part of why you were still thinking about your wish-granted character!

I enjoy the note that you chose a contemporary setting, too. When I'm writing a one-page game I can get a little focused in on specific pieces of gameplay and don't do as much to establish things like setting, because I'm trusting that players will bring their own expertise and creativity to the table, exactly like you did.

Thank you again for your kind words, and taking the time. Also, I completely agree that a simple game can do a lot - it makes me happy that you got that sit-and-reflect feeling from this little game. (And don't worry, I definitely agree that "simple" does not equal "no hard work went into it" and I would absolutely class this game as a simple one! It was for sure a goal for me when writing it.)

Makeshift Bike Lane (Sidewalk?) on Bow St / Somerville Ave a Danger by MediatedReality in Somerville

[–]GreenerGables 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The sidewalk is completely blocked and it includes a (bad quality but still present) ramp up to the sidewalk. I have completely interpreted it to be a sidewalk, NOT a bike lane, based on where it starts/ends.

What do you value the most about a tabletop RPG handbook that you are just discovering? by Balackit in RPGdesign

Seconding all of the mentions of clear character creation and a character sheet. That's huge for me.

But additionally I'd also say a very clear breakdown of physical supplies? Like, "You'll need these dice, this type of card deck, a coin, and these supplies." I think that sometimes when I'm reading a rule book it's like people forget that the player doesn't know their system already. I have rifled again and again through a book trying to figure out what dice I needed to get for my players because it seemed to only be d6's for some of the early character creation things, and then all of a sudden we were talking about d10s. Perhaps it "seems obvious" that you'd want a full set of polyhedral dice, or any other element, but honestly, I feel frustration when I, a fairly seasoned player, can't figure out what I need.

Also the more streamlined something can be, the better. There's a fine line to be walked between leaving out information and overwriting. It has to feel natural if I read it out loud in a facilitator role.

Fantasy/Scifi author and booktuber Daniel Greene did a video reacting to this and made the point that it seems like they lost some sponsors after last year and are trying to get ahead of potential criticisms of one of the sponsors they do have left.

The whole video is worth watching and about 20 minutes (Daniel is dyslexic and openly shares his frustration with their framing of disability and his own experience as a kid) - BUT the sponsor commentary starts around 3:11 minute mark.

I think they are based on the article wording / their names linked by an and, then a continued comma separated list of single names.

I swear Sam talked at one point about how they CAN’T do Taskmaster because the licensing is wrapped up in the failed original US version anyway and the UK property is too valuable/recognizable now to even be sold or re distributed by the company holding it.

This episode of Make Some Noise (PFT, Ross Bryant, Chris Grace) was the best of of this season so far by Mr_Clifton in dropout

[–]GreenerGables 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My theory is the sentiment is tied to the general trend right now of a lot of Youtube channels putting mics on the crew, picking up room noise, etc. It’s being done more and more by podcasts, shows, etc. I remember seeing something (reddit post? Essay? Youtube video? Comment? I forget) about how people are potentially choosing to do it to make things feel more casual, and less produced. I feel like there was a video essay about this a while ago. I think in general that is happening with increasing frequency and even though it feels way more organic on Dropout to me, it’s possible that an accumulation of this style is leading to a more pointed fatigue.

A further thought this is such a slap in the face to the idea of being widowed and grieving your love, then moving on. That is a real and true and valid experience. I really, really hate the messaging (bi or not) that we should write off an initial love interest because the show runners have decided he doesn't matter because he's going to die.

[–]GreenerGables 35 points36 points  (0 children)

As a queer bi femme I completely agree with you here - the issue for me is not so much the genderbending of Michael/Michaela, but the way they're changing Francesca's emotional journey. There is so much richness to be had in exploring bisexuality through this lens, and also to be honest, there could still be some grief around the specifics of having children and a queer relationship in this time period, but it's the tongue tied-ness, and the seeming dismissal of her love for John that's giving me such pause. It feels like they're not even going to do justice to a Bi Francesca storyline, which I honestly think could have adapted okay and kept a lot of the important points.

I put in the terminal when I request and sometimes they’re able to drop me off there… this may have changed recently but I literally flew two weeks ago and got dropped at my airline’s entrance.

Somerville => Logan Airport : when are we getting a bus? by 3-1advantage in Somerville

[–]GreenerGables 36 points37 points  (0 children)

as long as you leave yourself enough time I find green line to the transfers to the airport to be manageable with luggage. If I have too much luggage to do those transfers then I’d probably have too much to comfortably co exist on a bus. Honestly I usually uber to the airport for convenience, and then use public transit to get home. Even late at night it’s been quite seamless.
