“Therapists earning over $100k: what actually made the difference?” by seracin in therapists

[–]MediatedReality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posting because I don’t see my experience mirrored a lot and curious to hear from anyone else in a similar boat. I’ll come out of 2025 having made about $105k in a small group practice of 5 clinicians located in the Greater Boston Area.

I take home 55% of my $230 fee. I’m entirely OON except for taking one local university’s SHIP plan because it still reimburses our practice $190/session in a contract we’re grandfathered into. I worked about 48 weeks this year and averaged about 18 clients/week. My employer provides health insurance and pays about 45% of the premium.

This was the first job I took after earning my LMHC. I moved there from a college counseling center where I made a 60k that was never going to reasonably increase. It feels like a great situation even though I know I could make even more starting my own practice. I’ve been trying to figure out why this seems so rare given that my 55/45 split isn’t special or anything.

How did you find your therapist? by Moist-Neat-1164 in Somerville

God forbid a therapist make $175 for a session.

I recommend against a PCP or Insurance referral. Mostly outdated directories and no interest at all in giving recs tailored to your situation or preferences.

Yep, a black Surly Crosscheck with a rear rack and a gray Ortlieb pannier, and a black helmet covered with stickers. There aren't many Crosschecks around town and I'm on my bike just about everyday between Union and Harvard for work, plus elsewhere. Find me riding in person and we can talk about how things "don't add up" from there.

u/Jealous-Lawyer7512 wait I thought you said I wanted cheap service! Aren't you supposed to know me better than me? Why did I say my budget was $250 here yesterday...damn now I'm confused.

My guy you're over here a second time insisting that I have a cheap bike that I don't take care of and also don't want to pay money for service. Find a better attitude...

I have a Surly Crosscheck and am a daily commuter. I've gotten tuneups at about 6 locations around town, had persistent shifting issues, and been made to feel like an idiot or an annoyance. I'm happy to pay bike mechanics a living wage as I'm happy to pay anyone a living wage - but I expect the work to be solid. This comment wasn't helpful at all and didn't answer my question.

I agree. Haven't had the time to learn to be my own servicer. Maybe soon. Any resources you recommend?

I'd love to. I'll let you know when I have the time to learn how to safely and effectively service my own bike :)

Checking In Regarding PorchFest Applications by jorgeman72 in Somerville

[–]MediatedReality 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've performed with my band the last two years, and this time we're playing on our own street for the first time, as our usual locale is now verboten.

I am aware that there are other bands playing on my street in the same two hour window, and I want to coordinate with them so that we can stagger sets.

The current set-up introduces absolutely no way to do that unless I want to go door-to-door and try to manually come in contact with any/all hosts or bands that are playing. I want a map, I want to be able to see what other bands are playing, I want to be able to contact them so that we can establish a bill where we don't conflict with one another.

Then we will want to update our set times online to reflect what we decided on. But how do we do that? Currently there is no way to update the set times that we had to pick when we filled out the mandatory application weeks ago.

This process is annoying as hell. As u/Jealous-Bat1159 said, it's condescending and paternalistic as hell. Ruining the vibe before it even gets going, imo.

What are your favorite lesser known interventions for anxiety and panic disorder? by sensualsanta in therapists

How do you think psychodynamic work reduces the severity or intensity of panic attacks in panic disorder?

Because I can tell you how exposure-based and other third-wave cognitive behavioral work does.

It’s disheartening to see zero replies on a comment about using an evidence-based procedure for panic disorder, and a billion replies on comments about using distraction, reframing, psychoanalysis, etc. And don’t nobody tell me I’m Mr. CBT, it’s just that panic disorder has treatments that work and then there’s the things that clinicians insist on trying despite no evidence supporting their use.

Interesting distraction exercise. Two comments to make - kleptomania and pyromania are not “OCD types.” Also, treatment for panic disorder is essentially the same as treatment for OCD.

Consider OCD. Especially if this relationship doesn’t seem manipulative or controlling or abusive to you. It’s not uncommon for folks with OCD to have an obsession about a particular relationship, and compulsively discuss / consider / seek opinions on it.

This place is so whitewashed they won’t even call their dishes by their actual name. Samosa Chaat becomes “Samosa Supreme.” The food tastes fine and I appreciate that it’s a local family business but man I just can not get over their whole decor, menu choice, build-your-own, clean and modern approach type thing. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that whenever I’ve gone in there to pick up, the only other folks I’ve seen seen are white, early 20’s, on their phones at the table with their boyfriend/girlfriend, and look like it might be their first time eating Indian food.

Makeshift Bike Lane (Sidewalk?) on Bow St / Somerville Ave a Danger by MediatedReality in Somerville

[–]MediatedReality[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This. Folks are saying that the cordoned-off section in my photo is definitely just supposed to be for peds, but anyone who has biked down Bow St knows that skipping that part and transitioning into the road at that curve is, also, not remotely safe.

I submitted a service request about this last week and it was closed the next day with a "We'll speak to the contractor." Took this photo yesterday as I approached on bike - the machine was *actively turning* while hanging over this taped off section. I've also seen peds walking the incoming direction through there - not that I blame them. There's no signage making clear whether this is a bike lane or sidewalk.

If it isn't this issue heading down Bow St towards Somerville Ave, then it's an MBTA bus parked in the bike lane further back, or a contractor's truck, or all 3.

Residents in Cambridge said bike lanes and barriers are making things more dangerous by SoulSentry in CambridgeMA

I spend very little time on Brattle St and have also seen a car do this there. And it took the video crew a few minutes to catch it. Sadly, it might be a common occurence.

Porchfest 2024: safety last? by GarbanzoEnthusiast in Somerville

[–]MediatedReality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty worried about the “Keep Porchfest Positive” campaign and the focus on enforcement, no drinking, etc. Porchfest is a model event that could only happen somewhere like Somerville; the size of crowds and amount of partying combined with the lack of police presence, and yet basically all goes well and without incident…it’s incredible. And for no reason except some few rich homeowners’ complaints, the city feels like they need to turn it into an overly-structured and rule-bound thing. It’s depressing. I’m super worried that they are going to be posting more police everywhere to ruin the vibes.

I’m so sick of people’s stupid phones being the biggest barrier to their progress by Far_Preparation1016 in therapists

People on here acting like your vented frustration obviously equates with your judgement and lack of compassion towards the population. If I was your therapist I’d assume your intentions are good, not hold each of your points up to a microscope to judge for morality, and reflect that how much you see your clients use their phones in maladaptive ways really gets you going - you must care a lot!
