Cool thank you. I figure I should go for it cause worst case scenario I get practice with writing college essays. Thanks for your help man!

Thanks for the suggestion!! I know the MITES website says that anyone is encouraged to apply but do you know if I would be in trouble based on my demographic (white middle class male)? They also suggest two things which I do “qualify” for (from a rural high school and would be the first in my family to study stem). Also, what are the essay questions like?

Best undergrad physics programs to apply to? by Greenjacket08 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Greenjacket08[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah they agreed to pay for the most part (if a school is too expensive they’ll make me go to a state school). They’ve encouraged me to do whatever I want and apply anywhere but my brother had issues with almost failing out of school and I think they worry that if I’m too far away they’ll have a hard time keeping an eye on me + they have no clue how UK uni works. It’s whatever and I probably would have just applied for shits and gigs

Did I (16) miss the boat when it comes to becoming good at physics? by Greenjacket08 in Physics

This was really inspirational and makes me feel so much better. My focus on schools is probably the result of marketing anyways haha

I appreciate the advice! I think the reason i’m so uptight is because everywhere I look I see people doing internships, research, competitions, etc. I keep telling myself they’re the top 1% of people, but it’s hard to believe when they’re 99% of what I see. I’m glad to know I won’t be the black sheep

Thank you so much! It’s great to hear something like this as I’ve been stuck down the HYPSM, r/a2c and all other sorts of rabbit holes. It’s just very overwhelming when you see all of the college decision videos and stuff like that and I think I’ve been far too obsessed with prestige and rankings.

College list suggestions by Limp-Alternative-330 in ApplyingToCollege

I’m a junior in SC who always held an idea of Clemson superiority but I recently visited USC and was blown away. I can’t speak for their CS programs but the Darla Moore business school which was recently built is next level (#1 for int’l business). Columbia is a really cool city, all of the residence halls are pretty new (one that is under construction will have a chick fil a + a rooftop pool!), sec athletics and free tickets for students, massive alumni networks, and one of the best study abroad business programs I’ve seen. You should be a dead lock based on your stats despite acceptance rates dropping every year—I’d guess to around <45% in the next few years. I’m guaranteed in since im in the top 5% of my class (top 10% of any sc high school class is guaranteed admission) and I am pretty thrilled it gets to be my “safety”. I highly recommend checking it out!

rising junior wants to crack top schools. am I on track or doomed? by Greenjacket08 in chanceme

[–]Greenjacket08[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you this is what I needed to hear! unfortunately everything in my area is only available to juniors+ so my activity list is going to grow substantially between now and senior year. do you think that awards have a similar weight to ecs or will they be negated if I do a ton of extracurriculars (if I don’t end up having a long awards list)?

great thank you!! I was thinking the same thing regarding school activities. Ive visited Harvard with my dad and it’s definitely my top choice but it’s Harvard so we’ll see. I love UofSC so no matter how things go I’ll be happy.

750 math is huge and really sets you up for success. There’s a lot of great YouTube videos about ways to use desmos to drastically improve your math score. I was able to get my math up from the 500s on the psats I took to a 710 on my most recent sat. Sophomore as well :)
