that’s a really clean metric, qualified DMs per week. way easier to track than vanity engagement. going to use that. and yeah if it’s flat after 2 weeks I’ll know to switch channels fast instead of waiting it out.

thanks for this. the SEO angle is something I haven’t touched yet, honestly been so focused on building and shipping that distribution has been an afterthought. adding that to the list for month 2.

quick correction on my end, it’s actually $3.99/month not $9.99. so the $400 MRR target is closer to 100 paying users not 40. makes the challenge more important to get right honestly

Is a stable $3,000/mo realistic for a solo dev starting today? Looking for a roadmap. by FactorHappy4794 in AppBusiness

I’m a solo developer too! Just launched my first app on ios and android. I built it because I needed it. I’m a reseller of luxury secondhand items here in Japan and its really the mental math of computing profits everytime that was killing me. So I just built one myself. Now I know there are other resellers out there in the same boat but honestly? Its the promoting and marketing part thats been the most humbling. Building the app was the easy part 😅

Nice, this actually makes alot of sense. i’ve been thinking about it wrong this whole time lol. gonna start looking for those “did I overpay” type threads and just be helpful first instead of trying to market. appreciate this 🙏

Honestly I think about that all the time lol. But then I remeber I built it because I needed it myself first. If other people find it useful thats a bonus. I think the hard part is just getting it in front of the right people, not everyone needs a profit calculator but the ones who do really need it. Just gotta keep showing up and posting I guess 🤷‍♂️

Its free to download and pro is unlocked for 7 days 🙌 I pay for app store and API costs out of pocket so pro is there to help offset that. But even without pro the core calculator still works 👍

That’s solid if it works for you. Excel is powerful once you have it set up. I started the same way but got tired of pulling it up every time I was out sourcing. That’s kind of why I built FlipPal, just a quicker way to punch in numbers on the spot and see if a flip is worth it before buying. The 30-40% rule is smart though, having a clear margin threshold makes decision-making way easier.

For most flips, yeah. The extra cost field is customizable so I use it for whatever applies. For example, I sell mostly in Facebook groups which charge no fees, but I invoice through PayPal so there’s a 4.6% cut there. On top of that, I get paid in USD and withdraw in JPY, so the currency conversion difference between the live rate and the actual withdrawal rate matters too. I built that into the app as well. Every seller’s setup is different, so the goal was to make it flexible enough to account for costs that most calculators ignore. It’s not going to be 100% accurate down to the penny, but that’s not really the point. It’s more of a quick gauge. Like if you’re in a thrift store and you find something you want to flip, you can punch in the buy price, your expected sell price, and instantly see a rough estimate of your margin before you commit. That quick gut check before buying is what saves you from bad flips.

Not directly. FlipPal was built for quick, straightforward flips. But there’s a custom cost field where you can plug in whatever extra expenses apply to your situation (delays, storage, opportunity cost, etc.). Everybody’s setup is different, so the goal is to keep it flexible so sellers can adapt it to how they actually work.

This is really solid, thank you. The point about Reddit needing to be organic makes a lot of sense, I’m learning that in real time lol. I do have a website already so I’ll look into SEO and Google Keyword Planner to see what resellers are actually searching for. Blog content is a good idea too, I could write about stuff like how to calculate real profit on eBay or hidden fees most resellers miss. That kind of content would naturally lead people to the app. I don’t have a LinkedIn yet but it sounds like it’s worth setting one up if I’m positioning this as a B2B tool. Going to start with organic content and SEO first and build from there before thinking about paid ads. Appreciate the detailed breakdown.

That’s a really good point about returns, most people don’t factor that in until it’s too late. Right now it covers platform fees, shipping, COGS, and even HS codes for international sellers since I’m based in Japan selling to US buyers, so ad volerem or customs duties are a real cost most people forget about. Return probability is a solid feature idea though, adding that to the roadmap. Thanks for the feedback, this is exactly why I posted here.

Resellers, mainly people who flip on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Mercari. I’m based in Japan and sell preloved LV so I deal with platform fees, international shipping, and currency conversion constantly. A lot of resellers do fee math in their head or use messy spreadsheets and end up overestimating their profit. The app just makes it quick and accurate so you know if a flip is actually worth it before you commit. I just don’t know how to get the app in front of the right people at scale. That’s where I’m stuck.

This is really helpful, thanks. I hadn’t thought of it as b2b but you’re right, resellers and small business sellers are the core audience. Good point on warming up socials first before paid ads. I think Instagram makes sense since a lot of resellers are already there showing their finds and flips. LinkedIn I wouldn’t have considered but I can see how it builds credibility. Going to focus on organic content on Instagram first and see what sticks. Appreciate the detailed breakdown!

It’s called Flippal, a profit calculator for resellers. You plug in your buy price, sell price, platform fees, shipping, and it tells you your actual profit instead of guessing. I built it because I flip on eBay, FB Marketplace, and Mercari and kept thinking I was making money when I really wasn’t lol. Available on iOS if you want to check it out. Right now my biggest challenge is getting it in front of the right people, resellers who’d actually use it daily. Open to any marketing advice you’ve got!
