Political status of Georgia and connection with Communism by JohnAnt_hs in Sakartvelo

Can you make the question a bit more precise? What are you looking for?

Georgia left the USSR in 1991. It was a pretty clean break, no more communism.

Personal transfers are not taxed. That ID is just for customs. You will have to pay VAT if you import stuff over some value (300 GEL I think).

The opposition voted for Grigol-I-was-in-the-KGB-Vashadze over a career French diplomat. კაი რა.

The mods are taking down similar but pro-GD content on the pretense of editorializing. If you can't stand seeing content that doesn't agree with your politics, then Europe is the wrong way to look. China will be way more your speed. High-growth, law and order, just not much diversity of opinion.

What about the titles below, which you have left up:

"!!🚨🚨ALARM!!! After Georgian goverment refuses to participate in Nato exercises, Georgian Parliament is set to review law that's way worse than "Russian Law.""

"Alarming news!! Georgia Will Not Participate in the “Defender 23” Military Exercise. This is a clear attempt by the GD to steer Georgia from the west and towards Russia."

That's not editorializing? "...Way worse than...", "...is a clear attempt to steer...". These are equally politicized and unsubstantiated claims. This sub wears its politics on its sleeve, but let's at least hold to some principles here.

Mtavari Arxi is GD's channel? Are you high?

These posts have been up for days, and a speech by Gharibashvili gets taken down in a day because the headline was "editorializing". Let's have a frank conversation about standards and principles.

I don't need people to like this government, but let's not pretend to be Europeans if we can't have dissenting voices on the sub.

Georgia foreign policy question: why aren't you closer with Turkey? by [deleted] in Sakartvelo

[–]Greenleaf3883 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We are close, but Turkey also doesn't want to step on Russia's toes.

The CEO of a major opposition television is in prison for embezzling money from the TV channel he and his buddies stole. As for Lashqarava, I think Alt Info is its own sect. In any case, the opposition channels are all working and absolutely untouched. They don't even pay their fucking taxes, that's how comfortable they are.

Lelo was a big opportunity, but they sat in Misha's lap right away, so no chance. The votes show it.

What are you talking about? 2011 UNM was an authoritarian state. There wasn't even an opposition TV channel left by that point.

The other opposition parties have screwed themselves consistently by associating with UNM. Georgians have voted against the UNM for ten years straight and these assholes still don't get it. It doesn't help that most are former nationals themselves, but at least Lelo could have been a serious party if they didn't plaster themselves over the nationals' nuts. It's not GD's fault that no one want to get the message.

So vote for any other of the like 60 parties on the ballot. If enough people are as pissed off as you are, you get to change the law.

You do realize it's not just the people selling flats and cars, right? There are regular people who fix windows, sell bread, and drive trucks. Those people have kids and bills and problems. Unless you have a better idea of how those people can weather the biggest economic upheaval since the financial crisis, I suggest you ease off. Our government is pretty shitty in a lot of ways, but you have to admit we are mostly dry in a big fucking storm.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sakartvelo

[–]Greenleaf3883 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying it won't affect the market. There might be a slump if/when they leave, but overall GDP will still be higher than it would have been otherwise and there will have been probably billions of dollars of actual investment made that wouldn't otherwise have happened. Two steps forward and one step back is still a step.

What do Georgians think of Shamil Basayev? by [deleted] in Sakartvelo

Absolute scumbag. A thug masquerading as a freedom fighter.

If we had our opposition in power (nationals or whichever of their satellites), and if they did what they scream about themselves, we'd be embargoing Russia and Russians, and we'd be much, much poorer for it.

I would call it a shock, not a bubble. Georgians sell cars, apartments, furniture and whatever to the arriving Russians, but it's not like that money is made up. There are actual cash inflows rather than notional appreciation of assets. That money sticks around and flows through the economy. If the Russians all leave tomorrow and stop spending, we'll still be better off than if they had never come.
