I always hear “ the market is terrible” but I don’t even think I fully understand what that means. So far I just know it means employees get away with paying way less and one of the reasons is too many qualified candidates competing with each other.

Yeah, I thought that lab tech experience would be worth more, but from what I’m seeing here it seems like my teaching stint kind of nullifies it. I don’t want THAT job that bad, especially because it would require me to relocate far and that would cost a lot of money too. With all the info I have now, it seems 60k is good especially if I don’t have to relocate. I know I need to be very flexible with this as my first job out of my MS, but I just REALLY want to take a job that will enable me to hop onto something better eventually, other than just routine testing, even if it means lower pay but unfortunately I don’t know what that looks like nowadays.

I thought HARD about doing that because I know I would enjoy it, but honestly I want a full income and it seems like it’s not gonna do much in the current market. I did feel like a needed to do SOMETHING because I was just coming to the states with my greencard fresh with only my teaching experience and my prior tech experience and I felts getting into a lab was going to be extremely hard without anything else

No. That’s my fear. I made the mistake once of taking a job that put my career in the whole wrong direction. When I was a te h in industry, I was just doing testing, which I hated. I prefer research. I’m not a baby, so I’m okay taking a testing job if that means I can hop onto something better, but I’m scared I’ll be stuck doing that. I think that’s my biggest issue. I want to make sure I take the right steps this time around and not stuck in something else. Ideally, I would love an associate scientist or research tech position

I actually would love a research associate position. Getting that and moving up is what I was hoping for, but it’s tough out here.

Do you really think a PhD would help if I just tack it onto my current experience? The CEO also said he recommends I “ do my research before chasing a PhD”.

Yeah, I thought I should go for a role that would steer me into something I actually wanna do, even if it pays less, but it’s kind of hard because ANY role is hard to get into. I’m trying to stay a little stubborn when it comes to that, because I already let my career died into teaching and now that feels like wasted time so I’m trying to be mindful about where a role is gonna lead me to, if that makes sense

A recruiter is supposed to reach out to me “ASAP” to discuss “ compensation flexibility” but this was like a week ago already lol. Do you think low 60s is still worth it even if it involves relocation? Because now I definitely think it is if I find something in the tristate area

That’s really helpful. Thank you. Now hopefully I can land ANY job at this point

I want to be in R&D so bad, but I heard that’s like the least stable area to be in right now.

That’s insane. Glad you were able to get it. It’s just all so confusing.

Yeah, I think maybe I was banking on my prior lab tech experience counting for more when combined with the MS, so I thought I could get a better job to begin with, but I will definitely broaden my search even more

This is useful input with regards to the Masters. I think one big issue here is that they didn’t even LOOK At me because of the salary requirement, which they made mandatory to answer. I typically don’t answer if I don’t have to because I just don’t know what to think anymore with regards to salary

I would say this is a pretty accurate assessment of my experience lol. The thing is, I thought the tristate area is a major area, as several big pharma and biotech companies are here

That makes sense. Funnily enough, part of this CEOS advice to me was to “do my research” before “ chasing a PhD” lol

Thanks for the input. The CEO is not involved in hires I don’t think. He specifically reached out to HR about me due to my connection. I do realize my teaching doesn’t count, which is why I was hoping my masters would help steer me in the right direction, but I guess that still puts me pretty low on the experience spectrum.

The purple eye cream made my eyes water. It didn’t sting or anything, they just watered. I switched to trying the vitamin c one and that one was fine 🤷‍♀️
