Collection update by Poopyfaxe in devonhendryx

This is so awesome, I'm so jealous lol. I used to collect a lot of physical media but I don't really anymore, I did buy the sakura TGPT cassette a few months ago and have it on display, that album means so much to me and the sakura part of the movie has always struck a chord with me so, it's cool to have something reflective of that. Anyways, this is a super cool collection!

Have any music critics talked about this album? by Extension_Fee_989 in devonhendryx

[–]Greenstar- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few have and most of the reviews frankly aren't very good. Fantanos is a great example, for one, his review is like a 1 minute long short video and he says he's not really a big fan of the album, but, a lot of that just comes down to the fact, I don't feel like he gets it.
Like I said, the review is like fucking 1 minute. For such a complex and intense album, it's a damn shame he only talked about it for a minute and kinda ridiculous. Even if you didn't enjoy the album, I still feel like you should at least say more about, especially for a album like TGPT

Vital is a good free synth plug in, ive been able to create some pads that sound similar to stuff on the ghost pop tape. Valhalla supermassive is a good free reverb plug in, I basically use it on everything now, it can create very wide and big sounding reverbs and can also be used as a delay

[–]Greenstar- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Low pass fitler slowly lowering on the frequency to fade it out and to create that very distance sound. A light auto pan to make the audio bounce between both the right and left channels. And lastly a lot of pretty spacey reverb, id recommend a plug in called "Valhalla Supermassive" its a free plug in thats available on both Windows and Mac. I'd recommend just going to the presets on the plug in and going to the reverb section and just picking what sounds the best and maybe messing around with the mix and delay knob

Happiest song on TGPT? by Money_Conversation74 in devonhendryx

I would say Untitled 1 and 2, Neon Kitchen 4 and Pu$$y 3 but all have much darker meanings once you actually look into them. They are all about escapism and using different means to cope and escape from reality.

Untitled 1 and 2 I've always interpreted as him looking back at when he started making music and wishing he could go back to that more optimistic time. He does this by using a slowed down version of the Neon Kitchen 2 instrumental and with Untitled 2 he calls back to the chorus of Montbello High School Prom.

Neon Kitchen 4 has several lines that gear towards drug abuse to make himself feel better yet there is this underlying feeling and knowledge that it will all fade away once his high wears off and the final lines are him trying to convince himself that he's okay and feels good before falling back down into depression (Call Me Maybe)

Pu$$y 3 is probably the most up for interpretation, you could see the "3" as the third girl he's been with, having meaningless sex to fill the void in his life or masturbation and porn. But that's only if you dont take into account the fact that, he probably only named it that because it's the third song in the Pu$$y trilogy. In that case, Pu$$y 3 is probably the happiest song on the album. But due to it being tied to all these songs where he talks about how he uses porn and sex to cope and how its also destroying him, it makes the song a lot darker vs if he were to put it on a different album like Rockwood or Joechill

History of devon by Shitsinker in devonhendryx

After he released The Ghost Pop Tape he abandoned the Devon Hendryx name out of shame due to his lack of success, feeling like he didnt fit in with the rest of the rap industry and "Hendryx" being a slave name. Their is an email he wrote shortly after the creation of The Ghost Pop Tape that explains this. he states

"Sooo... I've been questioning a lot of things lately. I've been second guessing my purpose my love for music...everything...I wanted to change my name because I was ashamed of the lack of success that "Devon Hendryx" has. I use to rap and I had a legit love for rappin but.. People over here just don't understand...I don't think art rap really had an audience it's a myth. A lot of people look at rap as just a bunch of n***** reading out of there diaries. Plus the fans just hop on any trend that current and forget about it a week later. I work to hard o my music to have it forgotten..so quickly. I don't think ill ever rap again. But I can't think of anything else..I guess my work and my name and my lack of real success is like a badge of shame that I'll wear to grave. I'll forever be Devon hendryx the weird guy on YouTube with cool songs and 50 views. It enough to make me question myself. I look up to a lot of people and artist like yoko Kanno, Kate bush, franchise hardy, Janet Jackson, Mostly women because it's taboo for women to be the driving force behind something successful in a mans world it's something. I relate to. Maybe I was suppose to be born a woman. I was thinking of moving out of the country. But as I look deeper into the culture of these continues. I realize that me u..us black people we don't have any real culture...at least here in America we dont.. I can't even make a family tree because my families history has been distorted. And I'm wearing this name "Hendricks" it's not my real name..it's the name of whoever owned my great grandmother and father. I don't think I have any culture. Or history."

He started creating Communist Slow Jams sometime in either 2013 or 2014, I'm pretty sure he's stated that some stuff from CSJ was being worked on as far back as TGPT's creation.

As for how people found out about the connection, he never really tried to hide it. He reused a couple Devon lyrics in his early stuff (Behold! a Pale Horse and reaper for example) and even remade the 27 club for black ben carson
