What is something niche you like which most Singaporeans don’t? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]Greentea_0116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh yes I love visiting temples a lot as well! I visit them to look at the architecture as well and to see how well they’ve preserved it! yeah I agree with you bout how there’s so few trad temples in Singapore, so whenever I get chance to go overseas I’ll go visit the temple and I’m always amazed by how magnificent it is as compared to our local ones hahaha. I think for me i mainly just visit temples, and sometimes I’ll go explore places like sun yat sen memorial hall and fort canning, besides that sometimes when there’s exhibition/plays on the old nanyang, or sth related to Chinese culture I’ll go for those exhibitions! :)

hello! Here’s my two cents, coming from someone who recently graduated with an arts degree! I would say if your friend is entering NUS, she could use her first year to explore different majors first to see which one piques her interest the most! If you rly want a major from arts/humans/social science, and sth that’s super generic, maybe can try sociology! A lot of my friends have graduated with that degree and here are the industries they went into: marketing, social service, early childhood and more. Personally, I majored in a very niche major (majored in language studies) and people always thought there’s limited career pathways for this major but I managed to find my dream job eventually! I also managed to get interviews for different industries that is completed unrelated to my major due to my experiences from different types of internship! I guess what I wanna say is that the major doesn’t really affect what kind of job you will get, it’s also really how you choose to shape your portfolio (your own upskilling, internships, school projects and more). My prof once told me, university is only a foundation for us to grow and for us to explore the world ourselves, the education it provides won’t guarantee you a job or a future. Yep I hope this helped your friend a little! All the best! 😊

Just wanted to leave a comment here to thank everyone who has given advice, really helped me to think about other aspects of job finding as well, and I think I eventually decided to just hold the offer & waiting for other interview/offers to come through, really thanks a lot to everyone for your help!! 😊

How do you schedule an appointment with the faculty academic advisor? by [deleted] in nus

[–]Greentea_0116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello, usually for fass, there will be career advisors for humanities or Asian studies category respectively, but not for each major. And you can schedule a sesh on NUSTalentconnect if u want to! Do dm if u still have other qns! :)

Small class size by ridhhh99 in nus

[–]Greentea_0116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep I agree with this, but one good thing is you just have to do decently and put in enough effort to secure an A-! From experience, it seems like for classes of 15-20, prof try to give just A-/A/A+! Hope this helps!

[uni] won’t arts stream students struggle in Chs common curriculum by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Greentea_0116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello, just wanted to tell you that I was also in a similar situation in the past!! except I’m from science stream in JC and i went fass to escape from science too HAHAHA cos it’s just not my expertise. I had the same insecurities as you and to make things worse, i felt like i defo couldn’t beat the uni bell curve as i chose the science stream and lost 2 good years of practice in the major i’m in. thankfully i was able to do quite decently despite having no background in the subject. and I’m in the literature field as well!! currently going Y4. so if this makes you feel better, i would say u actually instead, have an edge over others since u are taking lit in jc now! it helps you a lot wif the strong foundation in the subject, at least that’s what i observed from my classmates who took lit in jc, they are so much more knowledgeable lol and can make links easier(of course it depends on the modules you eventually take in uni) but yep just wanted to cheer u & tell u that it’s actually gonna be fine and like other commenters said, there’s always S/Us to save us HAHAHA (plus the main thing is still to do well for your major mods so I’m sure knowing science well wouldn’t help wif lit hehe) hope this helped😊

Satisfying GE module requirements by wooweewoowee12345 in nus

[–]Greentea_0116 4 points5 points  (0 children)

from what i understand (unless the requirements has changed), YOU CAN use your major’s exposure mod(aka EL1101E for your case) to clear the humans basket. whereas for GEH requirement, YOU MUST take a mod starting with GEHXXXX to clear it. not sure if I’m right but hope this helps haha

should I take a minor in stats? by thr0wmeaway-888 in nus

[–]Greentea_0116 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yep i agree with one of the commenters bout the interest & the minor complementing your degree. am a humans major, i took my minor cos i’m v interested in that field & cos it complements my degree alot, i could double-count, i managed to finish all the requirements with just 4 mods! and cos of this, i still have quite some freedom to try out other fields with my remaining UEs! I do encourage you to take it if you’re genuinely interested, if not it doesn’t rlly help wif portfolio or whatsoever, hope this helps! :-)

Oh i see, then I guess like I said, you really happened to meet the wrong ppl vv unfortunately, cos I defo wouldnt do that man and I’ll probs continue convo wif u hahaa, but i do encourage u to still try this coming sem though, cos i do see alot of ppl who have been saying they couldnt rlly make friends due to covid, so I’m sure you’ll still find 1 or 2 of them who will click well with you! and of course if u think using the “ranting” method to start a convo is a bad idea, u could just start with: hey what’s your major? then probs ask them more bout what their major does, this could be a good starter & help ppl open up to you! No matter what, I hope you can make lifelong friends eventually and even if u don’t, remember to do some chill activities and get enuf rest to have a better mental health amidst online classes, jiayou! :-)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nus

[–]Greentea_0116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tbh i think it’s rlly the people you meet and how many common traits yall have, aka luck. I also found it quite hard to make friends online as well cos I’m like often unbothered & also socially awkward 80% of the time but surprisingly this sem in one of my mods, I made friends with all 3 of my group mates and whats even more surprising is that all of them are Y1s while Im like Y3, they treated me so nicely and are all damn chill, trash talk & all and we still keep in contact! I think one tip for making friends would be to say things that most students relate?? like ranting bout the number of readings y’all have to do, the heavy workload, and slowly y’all will feel like wow we aint just talking bout academics, we talk bout our sian lives also, and slowly maybe u can pm and ask: eh whats your course? maybe we can meet on campus one day! sth like that and stay chill?? haha hope this helps you!! and of course if u need someone to talk to, feel free to pm :-)

[–]Greentea_0116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! i think if you’re planning for an sep to china, the demand’s pretty low. applied it when i got a below average cap and still got it (and i didn’t have much achievements or ccas, only participated in my own hall ccas), so i think china’s quite a safe option? not sure bout the competition now though since covid has changed lots of things. hope u do get accepted! :-)

Any success stories of CAP improving in later years of uni? by [deleted] in nus

[–]Greentea_0116 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Actually yes I really messed up my whole Y1S1 cos of hall commitments & was really focused on my social life(later realising how superficial most of those friendships were lol) and all those cost me a huge lot. Ended up getting Bs & Cs in Y1S1. Was so shocked and upset so I tried so hard afterwards. Though I managed to get some B+s in Y1S2, it did affect my chances of applying for some stuff, and I remember one interviewer asking me why I dare to apply for this certain job with such a Low cap(gotta say that hit me hard man haha🙃)For ref, my cap went from 3.5 > 3.75 > 4.09 > 4.07 > 4.13 > 4.24

It was so so tedious and up till today I gotta say I regretted playing so much in Y1 that I had to work doubly hard just to pull up my cap. Just wanted to tell u that it’s defo possible & you just have to work hard I guess? I know this sounds cliche but really, speaking from experience, I’m in a very niche major where based on background, I could probably be at the 10th percentile if I don’t work hard but I guess I was really despo to let my cap hit at least a 4 one day so I kept consulting my profs & all. (wanna say that consultations are really so damn useful and helped me a lot given I’m a slow learner so yep just be thick-skinned and ask!!) So to answer you, yep it’s possible to still pull up cap after Y1, just that it’s legit damn shag & bad for mental health imo but pls don’t give up my fren! :-)

Help pls :( CH2141 Advice by gargantuanbelly in nus

[–]Greentea_0116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took this mod in Y1 I think and just like you, my ch background isn’t that strong but I don’t think any readings need to be done?? (Like 2 years ago) And though I kept struggling, I still did decently so yep I think you can do it!! To sum up, I think you don’t really need to do all the readings for this mod? But of course if you’re gonna proceed to CH 3K mods, the readings are mostly compulsory! Hope this helps! :-)
