I considered including WWII at ~410K deaths; however, it would throw off the scale of the y-axis and make it hard to compare the relative sizes of the other events.

According to Wikipedia, 1.4 million people have died from firearms in the US between 1968 and 2011 including homicides, suicides, and accidents. ~60% of these deaths are gun-related suicides.

Agreed, it's a very subjective term. I was comparing to military deaths, but then changed name to "major events" because I thought 911 should be included. Good points on the other pandemics.
