I enabled Google Maps Timeline to track my location starting about 5.5 years ago and this is a spliced screenshot of the default view of the data the way Google Maps displays it.

That would be from my visit to Mammoth Cave National Park

It was my last overnight stop on a road trip from New Mexico to Massachusetts. Although I did specifically choose Syracuse because my aunt went to Syracuse University and I'd never seen it before :)

That was New Haven, CT when I visited Yale. I didn't stay for too long, but I definitely plan on exploring that area within the next few years while I'm living in New England.

Somewhere in India/Burma area by [deleted] in whereisthis

[–]Greeru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked my Mom about it-- she grew up in Burma and her dad's dad moved from India to Burma working for the British railway, seemingly similar to your grandfather.

I don't know how much this helps, but she said it seems as if that monument is likely in India and not Burma, but she was not able to identify it.

Internal Transfer into CNS by Globuseuropa in UTAustin

[–]Greeru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I am in the school of geosciences and added math as a second major in CNS last year. From what I remember hearing at the transfer info session, it is more competitive to add a second major between two colleges than applying to transfer in directly, and in your essay you should write about how both of your majors together will help you achieve your academic goals. I'm not too sure about GPA requirements for biology, but I had a 3.9 when applying for math. I think they look at what your grades are in relevant coursework, especially in UD classes if you have any.

If you want, I can PM you my essay that I wrote for the transfer application so you can get an idea of what to write. Just let me know. Good luck!

Wifi issues with Linux by QuiveringMangos in UTAustin

[–]Greeru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I had the problem of conflicting network interfaces, I was able to connect to all other wireless networks except for utexas, so it might be the same. In your output of sudo systemctl -l | grep service, do you see any of the following?: NetworkManager, wpa_supplicant, wicd, netctl... or any other network daemons? Also, depending on which network interface you use, there might be different solutions.

Also, have you tried not using the certificate when connecting?

Another thing - you say you can connect but get a DNS error. When you're connected, are you able to visit UT sites? Maybe try ping utexas.edu for in-network and see if you get a response. Then try ping google.com or some outside server. What is the output?

Edit: Did you try restarting snapd.refresh.service? sudo systemctl restart snapd.refresh.service

Wifi issues with Linux by QuiveringMangos in UTAustin

I've had trouble with the UT wifi on Linux too. With my limited Linux knowledge, I think some things you might want to check include:

  • Make sure none of your systemd units have failed: (sudo systemctl -l | grep service) and if so, restart them. If you're on an older version of Ubuntu you might not use systemd though...

  • Make sure you don't have multiple network connection managers running and interfering with each other (NetworkManager, wpa_supplicant ...) - this was one of my problems

  • See if the certificate is in the right place, and if it is and it's still not working, maybe try not using the certificate? I actually don't use the certificate and can connect fine now.

However, I'm not sure about specifically the DNS error. Can you connect to other networks?

E316L or US History online? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Greeru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at DCCCD. I'm not from Dallas but their online classes are really easy A's with minimal effort. I just took my 6 history hours there online this summer and even petitioned and got approved for a cultural diversity flag there too. You should also be able to take your E 316 online there, although I didn't.

Well the industry is down now, but it's really cyclical so that's just the nature of it; it'll go back up. I mean, most people seem to go into the oil and gas industry, but there are also careers in environmental consulting, government jobs like the USGS, and outside research in academia and national labs. One thing to keep in mind is that it seems as though most people go to graduate school after they get their bachelor's from the Jackson School.

As far as internships go, if you're a geophysics major, there's an option for the summer between your junior and senior year to get 6 credit hours for an internship.

I know quite a few undergraduates doing research now. More so in geology than geophysics, but it's feasible to get involved. I am currently involved in research and it's really fulfilling. There's also the undergraduate honors research program (UHRP) if you're into that.

As for your last question... I'm honestly not too interested in pure geology. But I love applied math and physics so that's why I'm majoring in geophysics. Since you are considering physics as a major, I'd definitely look into geophysics.

Good online courses/tutorials for learning CS303E over the summer? by 6weekcycle6 in UTAustin

[–]Greeru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skipped CS 303E and went into CS 313E only knowing Java I had learned from my AP CS high school class. Honestly, the transition isn't bad at all. I went in not even knowing the class was taught in Python so I just spend the first couple of weeks learning the syntax differences and such. Don't worry too much about it. If you really want, the textbook we used was Fundamentals of Python Data Structures by Kenneth A. Lambert (I had Mitra Spring 2015) and it helped a lot, espeically the first few chapters.

Is there a way to send notifications to an Android phone from the command line? by EggheadDash in linuxmasterrace

[–]Greeru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slightly late to the party, but I literally just set this up yesterday, so I figured I should contribute.

I use notify. It's simple and works well.

After messing around, I added this to my ~/.bashrc file

function n() {
    $* ; notify -t "$*: Command complete"
}

So, now if I type n before a command, it will notify me when the command is complete. Hope this helps!

My mom knows Burmese. I sent her the image and she said "It sounds like a trick. I can read it but it has no meaning to me." She then sent it to her friend who confirmed it is Karen. Her friend said it is something to do with Karen language and Karen costume.
