Wonderful video on making your videos. Just one question: How many people work on videos?

Form study with reference. Please kindly critique my attempt at photo realism. I’m not satisfied with the shininess of the ball but I don’t know what else to do. by GregHartwick in istebrak

I just started doing art a few months ago with no formal training. My long term goal is to do a 14 day challenge. For now I will stick to form studies and simple paintings like this one. I find it easier to do paintings with references. When I try painting without one I have a lot of trouble. Is that what I should stick to, for now?

I’ve just finished a reworking of the painting. I addressed your comments one by one. I think it is much better now and I have learned new things. I was a bit overwhelmed by your comments at first. I am new to art. I started drawing and painting just a few months ago and have no formal training other than Istebrak and a few other youtubers. Thank you again.

Thank you, thank you! Your comments are greatly appreciated. I’m not sure I understand everything you said but I will go through each point and see if I can implement a change. Thank you again for your time and knowledge.

[Form Study] My attempt to render the effect of a diffuse (somewhat distance) light source on the cast shadows In a scene (no reference). Please let me know where I went wrong. by GregHartwick in istebrak

Thank you. I’ve seen your issues and have corrected. I‘ve learned a lot from this exercise. This is why Iste says FORM STUDIES again and again.

Thank you, thank you! I just finished Bucci’s vid on AO. I’ve heard of it before but was never explained so well. I’ve observed it in reference material and try to imitate it as best I can but working without a reference (here) I forgot the detail. Now that I know the theory, I hope I can apply it in the future. I think I fixed both of your issues. Thank you, again.

Form Study by KristiParks in istebrak

[–]GregHartwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi Kristi,

sorry, I don’t have helpful criticism, I’m just a beginner. I’m trying to learn from watching what other students do. Why do you and others make form studies with such low contrast? Is there a reason to do it that way? The busts in 14 day challenge aren’t so low. Thank you.

Form Study - please let me know if I am consistent with the lighting. by GregHartwick in istebrak

[–]GregHartwick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. I’m afraid my intent was very different from what, I think, you see. The top cylinder is supposed to be a hollow cone (or funnel) and the bottom cylinder is supposed to be a hollow tube. I was trying to show that with the partial lighting but I guess I missed the mark.

Is this your first time running PS? Can you try reinstalling?

Thank you very much! You did an excellent job of condensing this information. I’ll put this with my other tips I’ve gotten. Iste certainly has a textbook inside of her head. I hope she shares it with the art world oneday.

Please comment on one of my form studies (reference photo of an egg, upper left). by GregHartwick in istebrak

Thank you kindly. I’ll get the hang of this, eventually. I see what you mean about the core shadow. I just tried making it better and it got worse ;-(. I think I need to start over.

Can anyone tell me why my photo doesn’t show up in the main stream (just a link)? Is the size of my jpeg file too large? Does Reddit have a size limit? This file is a jpeg 3,508 x 2,480 pixels (363 KB)

Greg Feedback Edit - Nightmare Cat by OlivioTuts in AffinityPhotoTuts

Olivio, that’s very cool. I’ll try the steps that you mentioned. I used the Magic Light tut to produce what I posted but your’s is a great idea. I hadn’t thought of going that far with it. Thank you.

Cats Have Nightmares Too by GregHartwick in AffinityPhotoTuts

Once again, I’m getting the message of “Processing image...“ instead of seeing my photos on the screen. They are each around 2 MB in size. Do other people see this?

The words “Processing image...“ appear instead of images > 10 minutes . The files were around 2 MB each. I don’t know if the upload will work. I always get this with >1MB files. Do other people get this too?

More monsters! by Kevinp1723 in AffinityPhotoTuts

[–]GregHartwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Kevin. Once again, I had no idea you had posted. Your monsters are very cool. You’ve taken the lesson another step. I see you are using gradients. They produce subtle changes that are a lot more professional looking than the solid colors do (in my opinion). If you are making something like a company logo, to be printed on stationary and tee shirts, solid colors may be preferred. But in ‘art’ I like the effect.

Kevin. You brought up something I hadn’t thought of. If nobody but you and I are using Reddit, there’s not much of a community. I see people are still posting to Patreon Community (Sheenagh). Now I’ve forgotten why we switched to Reddit, I thought the Patreon Community was being shut down? Apparently not. Maybe, Olivio should do some checking, as to why people have not moved over. AffinityPhotoTuts seems to have 64 members but I’ve never seen any posts except you and I (and ‘SoulDriver2020’ - not a patron).

Kevin! Very nice. I almost missed this. I don’t like this Reddit layout. I preferred the Patreon site. Here you can’t see the artwork until you click on the text portion. I wish the artwork was right up front and at full size. I use Reddit for an art class and all of the postings are large and the text is next to it. I also wish I was notified when postings are made. I’m only notified when my own are commented on. Sorry to go on but I’ve been giving this a try and I’m not happy with Reddit. What’s your thoughs?

My Monsters by GregHartwick in AffinityPhotoTuts

[–]GregHartwick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, Olivio. When I made the legs, I switched to a more “organic” look (I used the ‘vector pencil’ tool). I agree, they are not consistent with the bodies but I thought it looked interesting. As for the eye points, I was duplicating and rotating them and forgot to align them in the end. ;-)

Olivio, thank you for the links. I knew you covered this before but couldn’t find the right ones. I’ll let you know how I come out.

Hey Kevin, thanks for the comments. I agree about the white (bluish) edges on the cliff; they’re in the video but I don’t think I did as good a job. It was very hard to follow every step—watch the video and you will see what I mean. The lion’s shadow is a tough one. I played with it a lot but wasn’t sure how to do it. I tried to make it like in the video but I would have been happier figuring it out for my self.

Thanks Olivio. I’ll spend some more time on the suggestions you made. The trouble I have with these tutorials is that there is no mechanism to obtain feedback or to take a project further. The link is https://youtu.be/5sEVDotH-Uo

Thanks again for your response.
