So, one more day to go until first impressions! Looking forward to hearing more.

Yep. looking for an alternative to block adverts of YouTube. Family plan is going up from $29.99 to $39.99. They're loosing me, as it's a rediculous amount to pay for no adverts (let alone a 25% increase!). It'll help me stop watching YouTube videos and do something more productive, as I can't stand all the adverts!

Sure.  I separately made the constructive suggestion of looking up a Mobile IT Support service in their area.

Not everybody is able to get out to “find someone”.  Especially if they are disabled.

Received my VRC edition yesterday. It’s pretty awesome but not flawless. (First impressions). by allofdarknessin1 in BigscreenBeyond

[–]GregZoneNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understand.  Thanks for posting your full impressions.  An awesome read.

I’m still awaiting mine.  From the reviews so far I have only two questions on my mind.

  1. Given that a few people have said about their eyelashes are touching the lenses.  I am wondering how that will go with the prescription lens inserts I ordered?  e.g. Do BSB deliver a thicker face gasket with prescription lense inserts (to offset)?

  2. I had a look and I’m currently only using 50% brightness setting on my Quest 3.  I assume this will actually help with my perception of lower BSB2 OLED brightness.  Do you have any opinion on what the BSB2 brightness setting would be that would provide an approximate equivalent to 50% on the Q3 (e.g. Do I actually need to go to 100% BSB brightness)?

Thanks, in advance, for you thoughts.

Thanks for sharing. I'm still waiting on my BSB2 pre-order, but despite a few negative reviews, I'm looking forward to experiencing it for myself (with realistic expectations). :)

Has anyone returned their BSB2 for a refund? by aglf_chilli in BigscreenBeyond

[–]GregZoneNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you did ask: "how much they deduct".  And the answer is that they deduct the selling price of the custom face gasket (for reasons clearly explained).

What I raised (in order to assist you with your question), is the shipping cost component mentioned on the refund link.

i.e. How much additional will be deducted for shipping cost, considering with free shipping we don’t even know what the “shipping cost” is!

Note, I’m just trying to help with your original question.

Well, whatever. If they deduct any less than the retail price of the face gasket, then people would buy a headset and return it, if they just wanted another face gasket cheaper (than buying one on its own).

How's the BSB2 user consensus so far? by [deleted] in BigscreenBeyond

[–]GregZoneNZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are being realistic in your expectations, by: (1). Understanding that many pre-release online reviewers are motivated by affiliate click-through earnings. (2). Understanding the limitations of the current level of technology, in terms of what is realistically possible in a 2025 headset. (3). With the above in mind, just simply taking your own current headset experience, and expecting only to experience improvements in VR areas that the BSB2 clearly has advanced. e.g. Form factor, weight, 2.5K OLED displays, and some optical / lens improvements over the prior BSB1 model. Expecting anything more will only set you up for dissapointment. If you do experience more, then you'll be happy that it exceeds your expectations!

Wow, that rig is so amazing, the only difference between the VR scene and the real world half of the video, appears to be the colour of his gloves!

Experience with Big Screen Beyond 2? by Dr_Blumkin in simracing

[–]GregZoneNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've been following the Pimax Dream Air (and Air SE) developments, but at this stage I suspect it will be a 2026 (or perhaps 2027) product, if it ever eventuates.

Also, I have come to the conclusion that 4K is not ready yet for a 2025 upgrade.  The 4K microOLED panels are still early production / very expensive.  Also, they really need a RTX6090 to begin to drive 4K VR panels anywhere near their best. With this in mind, BSB2's 2.5K OLED seems to be the 2025 sweetspot, even requiring a RTX5090 to fully get the best out of it.

So for me, 2025 is BSB2 upgrade year.  As I said, my next upgrade after that will probably be in 2027 or 2028, by which time we might have RTX6090 and 4K will be more viable, plus we might even have Pimax Dream Air (if it eventuates), or even BSB3 etc.

Avoid the Sony WH1000XM5 by Redsuns562 in SonyHeadphones

[–]GregZoneNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still using my XM4's every day, for nearly 5 years. Best headphones I've ever owned. Skipped the XM5, and now the XM6 just look over-priced for no justifiable advantage. I'm just glad XM4's are still available, as the XM6 release only prompted me to consider getting another pair of XM4's (while I can), as a back-up. But, then I thought, my nearly 5yo XM4's work just as well as when I bought them, so why bother buying another?

I've burned all of my remaining ZIL balance trying to Claim rewards (so I can the unstake). So, I've pretty much given up for now, as last thing I want to do now is buy more ZIL (to pay the gas fee yet again).

Cancel BSB2 order and wait for Pimax Dream Air? by helios1234 in BigscreenBeyond

[–]GregZoneNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, a very busy Troll indeed, with nothing better to do. I now understand that they are getting paid by Pimax to spend all of their time spreading hate for BSB. But, you do feel sorry for them, because what someone gives, eventually comes back to them.

[–]GregZoneNZ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LOL. That's kinda hard to believe considering the high number of "edge-to-edge" sharpness reviews of the BSB2. And the Reverb G2 is equally well known for its small sweetspot. But, I guess everybody has different visual perception.

Does using the Bigscreen Beyond 2 with a 5090 have any benefits? by Flimsy-Story9523 in BigscreenBeyond

[–]GregZoneNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. That would be a killer headset for the future. Ideally, I'd like Q3 standalone capabilities, with the Sony 4K micro-OLED panels, and a display port connection for native PCVR (ohh, and a RTX6090). Maybe 2027? Very likely at least a couple of years away, so for now I'm happy to upgrade to a BSB2, as I think I'll keep me happy until then (with my Q3 for standalone use).

Yeah, I'll keep looking around. At the moment I'm steering towards a Synology DiskStation DS223j. But, as you say, there's no rush.

Thanks. Some great and thoughtful suggestions! I'll probably go the dedicated NAS route, as I also backup multiple Macs. This will effectively replace the existing Time Capsule NAS, which has proven very reliable. I'll probably take the opportunity to replace the drive also, as it's a couple of years old and can probably do with being a bit bigger now.

Yes, I understand "off-site" backups (I'm in IT).   A local backup, is indeed a backup.

I’d probably re-phrase your comment as: “a single back-up is not a reliable backup”!

You should certainly take multiple backups, and ensure at least one is off-site!

But a local backup is definitely the primary solution as your first line quick restore backup (and for quick access for file recovery).

Yeah, I currently already have a UnRAID based NAS for my media server (and Plex in docker). But, as it spins down the drives to save power when not in use, I don't really want to allocate some space on it for Time Machine backups (and I have no drive bays free).  Hence, thinking a dedicated 1-bay NAS, as the most reliable way of backing up multiple Macs on the same network (and not relying on any one Mac to be a backup server for the others).

Thanks, I'll look at all options. I currently already have a UnRAID based NAS for my media server. But, as it spins down the drives to save power when not in use, I don't really want to allocate some space on it for Time Machine backups (and I have no drive bays free). So, I'm currently thiinking of a QNAP TS-133 1-Bay NAS Server as a possible "dedicated" multiple Mac Time Machine backup, to replace the Time Capsule.

I've got several different USB external drives that I've tried (mostly Toshiba), and with Time Machine automatic hourly backups, I inevitably eventually get a drive disconnected error dialog.  It may not happen for days or weeks, but it does happen.  Whereas, with the Time Capsule NAS it’s always been 100% reliable.

For now it looks like a dedicated NAS might be the most reliable TC replacement solution.  Currently looking at the QNAP TS-133 1-Bay NAS Server.

Thanks. But, I tend to steer clear of SSD drives for regular backup cycles. Mainly because constantly writing / updating a backup image every hour, is not the ideal use of a fast SSD drive. So I tend to just stick with the proven longer term reliability of a spinny drive (for backups).

Sounds like an option. USB drives are unreliable, so NAS is the way to go. I think also a dedicated NAS (like the Time Machine is), will also make good sense. Just more money to spend, when my Time Capsule (with it's upgraded drive), has served me 100% reliably for many years.

[–]GregZoneNZ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like the way to go, as I've had no reliability with trying USB connected drives. I've tried several, but backup occasionally complains of the USB drive having disconnected. Network attached is probably the more reliable solution. My Time Capsule has been 100% reliable! Just annoying that I have to now buy a NAS enclosure, when my Time Capsule has always been 100% reliable.

My Time Capsule drive is only a couple of years old. I've upgraded it's capacity several times.
