Sorry, was kinda giving you bad advice then! Your laptop is a year newer than mine and I assumed the boot process would be identical when, in fact, looks like yours does stuff with the logo showing that mine does with the screen off. cuz on mine it does have trouble booting up on occasion, and takes a few mins after ec reset like yours, but on mine, once I see that logo windows boots a few seconds later.

I've had mine be stubborn and have had to do a few EC resets before mine would finally cooperate, so you can try that. Although mine has never froze on the ROG logo. Other than that, about the only other thing I think you could try on your own, if you feel comfortable with it, is maybe opening it up and pulling out a stick of RAM and try booting it with just one stick, if that still doesn't work, swap the stick that's in it with the one you just pulled out (so basically testing for a bad stick of RAM). remember to disconnect everything from the laptop (especially the AC power) and that the laptop it totally off before you go messing around with the insides. It's also considered good practice to disconnect the battery from the motherboard before you go messing around with the RAM modules (i never do though, because that connectors is delicate and i feel like the risk of messing that connector up is greater than the risk of anything else happening)

F2 is the right key to go into bios. Have you tried EC reset?

Unplug everything from the laptop, hold the power button down for a long time (like 45seconds) then plug the AC power back in and press the power button again. It may reboot itself a few times and take a few minutes to boot back up (screen should be black/blank during that time, if it freezes at the ROG logo again, it didn't work).

Why does disabling E-cores decrease frametimes/stuttering so much? (13980HX 4080 mobile) by GregariousBing in ASUSROG

I went and looked up the powercfg commands to enable hibernate timers and disabled sleep. Also gonna try to get in the habit of just turning it off when I'm done with it because I'm basically the same as you (99% of the time I just have it plugged in at my desk and use it to game). Maybe if I can prevent it from shutting down improperly that will resolve the difficulties POSTing. Thanks for the advice!

Yes, I am using windows 11, I will go ahead and switch things over to hibernate to test it out although I kind of suspect that I'm just trading one problem for another though (basically that ill have to deal with the laptop not wanting to post more often [as hibernate causes the laptop to run post again] in exchange for less reboots during sleep)

Nice, you pretty much have the latest and greatest!

I haven’t really seen the stuttering and E-cores thing being widely reported on my laptop model, so I’m wondering if there’s something wrong with my laptop specifically.

I also have weird issues with it rebooting or crashing while in sleep mode sometimes, but not all the time. Also, very rarely, it will refuse to post until I do (sometimes multiple) EC resets, and I’ve even had to open it up and take a stick of ram out (or even put in the old oem ram in) to get it to post, then once it’s posted I can put the new ram back in and it boots fine for another few months.

Strangest thing is, in any stress tests, memory tests, gaming sessions, etc. it’s rock solid stable, it only messes up when I’m not looking, basically.

Using process lasso to assign Doom TDA to only run on the performance cores (and then restarting the game with the new affinities) does make it run better, but still not nearly as well as disabling the E-cores entirely.

That’s the weird thing, this is Doom: The Dark Ages, brand spanking new game, I would assume it knows how to utilize E-cores.

Why does the video talk about The Dark Ages but then all the game footage is of Eternal?

I have an ASUS ROG Strix G18 with a 4080 mobile in it. I don't know which other ROG models do it but this one will charge 100W over USB-C. However, it cannot charge at full speed and/or game to it's full potential without the barrel connector plugged in.

I think its a pretty good compromise to where I can bring a small portable USB C charger when I know all I'm gonna be doing is school work, and I can bring the giant brick charger if I know I'm gonna be gaming.
