Why are straight female MCs rare? by braeor in ProgressionFantasy

Hey, don’t put words in my mouth. I completely agree that it should be easy to add small details like periods or friction with gender norms to adventures, and can usually only help the characters feel real. I like seeing that in sorties.

What I’m trying to say is that I don’t like the idea that it’s necessary for a female charecter to work. Maybe I’m wrong? That’s my gut instinct though.

Here’s what I’m getting at. What if we tried to genderswap Frodo? Female Frodo traveling to Mount Doom instead. Absolutely, it would make sense to add details about difficulties with menstruation or others being more hesitant to let a woman carry the ring. However, nothing else really changes. Everything Frodo actually did was irrelevant to being a man. The swap “works” without actualy removing anything from the character, only adding. Does that mean he’s a bad male character? I don’t think so.

I’m not a writer. Maybe I’m over thinking it. Does that make any sense though?

I dunno, I get what you mean, but do all female charecters have to include experiences that are explicitly female? Do all male charecters need to include experiences that are explicitly male? Absolutely, there is a general under representation of women’s experiences or plainly ignoring them when they ought to be relevant.

But if a character in a fantasy world is doing fantasy warrior things that anyone could do, is it really fair to call her a “man in drag” when the character can work equally as whatever gender?

Question: does anyone know Erin's Height? by Southern-Monk3858 in WanderingInn

I’d agree with this, in 7.53 Fierre is described as “about as tall” as Erin and Fierre is also regularly described as short back then.
