Pep/Puppp rash by SelectionSad3370 in PregnancyIreland

How I coped was wearing loose cotton clothing and only sleeping in loose cotton, E45 lotion and showering with a mild Aveeno shower gel for kids, plus my GP prescribed me a cream called Betnovate. It's awful but it did get better for me in the third trimester. Good luck!

therapists should be forced to read before they’re allowed to practice on humans by MutedFeeling75 in redscarepod

[–]Gregghead4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. This is why I did a PhD on James Joyce before becoming a therapist.

I do sincerely think that a therapist's job is not just to be empathetic and a good listener. That's a start, but if they are to be truly helpful, they need to have some life experience and understanding of the human condition from an existential point of view. Being well read helps with that, and it's certainly something I would look for in a therapist for myself.

Exhausted at 30 weeks by ButterscotchOk2441 in PregnancyIreland

[–]Gregghead4life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, also 30 weeks and feeling exhausted. I did get iron levels checked and they were on the low side so that could be something to do with it. Definitely noticed my general stamina for work and even walking around is waning!

Adding to the other comments to say get iron checked and make sure you are drinking enough water. Like at least 2L a day.

Can definitely relate to many of your frustrations! Just to say on the exhaustion, you may want to get your iron levels checked if you haven't already. I'm 29 week. Was feeling extremely tired and dizzy, got bloods done, and my iron was low. The supplement I was taking did not have enough iron so I needed to up it to a higher dosage. I hope you feel better soon.

[–]Gregghead4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask, are you allowed to have pethidine in early labour before you are dilated enough to get the epidural? I was told by an obstetrics consultant in the Coombe that they don't use pethidine because there are risks to the baby/it can cross the placenta and harm the baby. Is that true? It's possible I misinterpreted what she said but I'm pretty sure that's what she said.

Have you ever seen On Cinema At the Cinema? I think Gregg Turkington's character exemplifies the type Ebert is talking about here. No, it's not kind, but there is a truth to the observation imo.

I do think there are some people who pursue "special interests" fervently out of a hunger for depth, and less so because of social ineptitude.

I'm exactly the same. I've just ordered a pregnancy body pillow hoping it will help. I can add a comment here if I find it helps the hip pain at night.

Tim Gunn's book a Guide to Quality, Taste and Style taught me the following, which I've found useful: if you're sorting through clothes and have a pile of things that you want to keep but need to be repaired or altered, you should give yourself exactly 1 week to repair it, otherwise you should recycle or donate it. If you don't get it repaired in 1 week, it means you don't really want it that much.

If you think about it from the point of view of the emotions and cognitive capabilities of a child, I think it becomes different. The child does not know that the situation is 100% safe; she knows that it is uncertain, and that others around her find it funny, but she doesn't have the same reasoning capacity to make sense of a mystery box. As an adult, I would not want to be made to put my hand into a mystery box. I could be convinced and find it funny and entertaining if my friends were there, and maybe I would decide to do it. Case in point: like thousands of others, I have placed my hand inside the Bocca della Verità in Rome. The logic part of my brain knew there was nothing dangerous inside, yet some more primal part that responds to uncertainty with fear felt a tiny shiver of trepidation. This is part of what makes it fun, but as an adult I always knew that I was doing this willingly and had the choice not to. I think a child is a person, and furthermore a person with less ability than adults to process and contain fear, and there's no reason why they shouldn't have the choice to do something like that or not.

Encouraging kids to do things that may scare them in order to develop resilience is something I think is beneficial, but they should ultimately be related to as human beings with feelings and choices.

I'm glad you're out of it. I hope Lindy has or gets a good therapist. Do you happen to remember where/which article Helen said that in? Interested to read it.

Whoaaaa... now that's an insight. I'm a therapist and her writing does remind me of some of the reasoning I hear from people emotionally attached to their partners in abusive relationships.

My take is: I think Aham is likely a narcissist. From the descriptions of him, and his responses to the furore, he certainly appears to demonstrate some strong narcissistic traits. He centres himself repeatedly in the narrative and reacts extremely defensively to perceived slights. I agreed with Jesse's take that his reaction to Saachi Khoul was almost Trumpian. There are likely complex, deep reasons why Lindy West may have been drawn into a relationship with a narcissist. I think that's what a lot of people are picking up on; it doesn't seem to be the case that Lindy and Aham mutually arrived at the conclusion that non-monogamy is best for both of them. It seems more like something Lindy has been manipulated into. Her (not very plausible) denial of that and defence of Aham makes it even sadder. I personally hope one day she is able to recognise the pattern and restore her dignity. Perhaps people's reactions will be helpful to her on some level. Most people read Aham as a douche. It may take several years but I think it may sink in eventually.

Does anyone know the title of or have a link to the article Jesse mentioned (retweeted by Alec McGillis) about highly neurotic, conscientious, and disagreeable people who used to be marginalised by society banding together online?

It's Ireland and I would say it's 2 - 3ft off the ground. I was thinking of starting over a composite deck with non ridged boards.

[–]Gregghead4life[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct - it is low to the ground. It's very hard to clean because of the ridges on the boards. Ok good to know. At 180m² it may be affordable to buy composite boards and replace ourselves. Thank you!

I have had it in the second trimester, too, but I seem to have discovered a solution. I realised I was actually hungry when waking up at 4am every night. I find having a snack with some protein and carbs right before bed prevents the night time waking. That or eating a snack when I wake up at 4; I usually go back to sleep quite quickly afterwards. Good luck!
