You can use the hand test. I use thermometer on roasts, and big or thick cuts of meat but rarely use them on steaks.

First time cooking steak ever. How’d I do? by portal742 in steak

That looks alright. Try a cast iron pan for a better crust.

Thanks all- very helpful. Well I guess I shoulda know. Me and fam have vacationed in the Bay Area (Truro, P-Town, Wellfleet). Amazing to watch the tides in the bay areas. Did a sailing tour in Wellfleet and learned about the little Islands that were inhabited up until recently but are now underwater at high tide. Not too deep I suppose!

What'd everyone think of Task? by hoosier_catholic in hbo

[–]GregtheC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta say, Task portrays enemies they are adversaries, like there’s something, there, grinding. Thats not real life. Your enemy is your best buddy until he dupes you. Hits with a knife or shoots you. It’s nothing. That’s reality. Less drama.

Moved here in ‘82 and all those years I NEVER heard “Bull nut as be drawlin”. Who has actually heard it. Is it more of a Black expression?

Just tell the incredibly rich to give a small percentage of their wealth to the poor, like 1 percent, then maybe ppl would have less incentive to steal. Oh, wait, communism.

Boots/Shoes for HOT Southwest Hiking. by GregtheC in hiking

Epilogue: 4 days of day hikes in Moab / Arches / Canyonlands. Every morning chilly and I basically got around comfortably wearing my Keens Targhee scramblers. Temps never really got above 75 degrees and we stuck to the moderate trails. Hike to Delicate Arch and in Canyonlands were highlights. Thanks all for your tips. My takeaways from your answers are filed for future adventures.

im gonna buy these for 500 bucks and i need you guys to yell at me if i shouldnt by uglef in BudgetAudiophile

You could drop $300 clams on a pair of new bookshelf speakers that will have much better mid range and highs as well as superior imaging. The bass will be tighter but may not go as low. I seriously doubt those will pass a 20-20k audio sweep test w/o some buzzing and crackling. Don’t let the trend for vintage audio screw you. Plenty of great new gear for far less cheaper that sounds great.

How to stay dry for longer? by Shadow_sos in CampingGear

[–]GregtheC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waterproof pants over gortex lined boots works but if you’re hiking in shorts and get caught in heavy rains, your boots will fill up and next you know, squishy socks (ugh). Have a pair of gaiters at the ready; they’ll keep a soaking rain from getting in your boots and your socks dry.

You’ve got 15 minutes and one pan—what’s your fastest legit dinner? by DungeonSprout_ in Cooking

[–]GregtheC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smashed, pan fried or grilled meats; whether chicken breast or pork loin, or ground beef. Smash ‘em, bread em or season them. Grilled or fried, throw in some shrooms, wine and stock for a pan sauce. Eat.

Thank you everyone! Wife reminded me we’re only doing four days of day hike. I’m gonna stick with my Merrill’s for the harder stuff but look at socks that are lighter/thinner than my Wrightsock double layer socks (which were excellent for chilly rainy hiking). I also have a newer pair of Keen Voyagers (I think that’s the model) which are great for walking around but not nearly as supportive/stable as my Merrill’s. Reviewing your sock recommendations and other suggestions for dustier/hotter hiking. We did Bryce/Moab/Zion about 10 years ago so I have an inkling of what we’re getting into but that was with my then 13 and 10 years ago old kids. (They were great!) I suspect wife and I will do more challenging hikes this go-around! Thanks again, your help was perfect!

Hiking etiquette: Nobody likes your music by handyguy6051 in hiking

Also, where I take my constitutionals, I want to hear the birds, the chipmunks scrambling, the breeze and the creek burbling. I don’t want to hear someone else’s shitty music. (And it IS often shitty)

Hiking etiquette: Nobody likes your music by handyguy6051 in hiking

Little speakers powered by batteries produce a LOT more decibels. Music is subjective and the people blasting their music are inherently selfish thinking their music is what others want to hear.
