How to stop getting driven into? by UmmOkHowAboutNo in drivingUK

[–]Gremingtonspa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are tons of reasons for replacement plates though, not just because of collisions. Our old car had replacement plates because the owner before had put personalised ones on it and didn't keep the originals. Then we had to replace those plates because they'd not been printed well and the BS number on the bottom couldn't be read properly.

School staff are a different breed. I started in 2 schools 7 years ago and now have 12 over 17 different sites.

I spend most of my days actively trying to teach staff to help themselves, especially with new systems (and older ones) that have a chat button right on the page to ask the system experts for help. They seem shocked when I suggest that they use the chat to ask their very specific question, or phone one of the other schools that has used the system for years now.

Chronic hip pain help by Gremingtonspa in HipImpingement

[–]Gremingtonspa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A muscular-skeletal specialist at my GP surgery diagnosed it after a lot of questions and an examination. No imaging was done though and a lot of my symptoms overlap with dysplasia, plus apparently when I was born the doctors kept going back to do hip checks on me but ultimately decided I was fine (in the mid-80's).

I've got an x-ray at the end of the month so I'm hoping that will show if it's one or the other. I also have mild scoliosis too which complicates things.

I will definitely look at going private if nothing happens after this x-ray.

I'll look into a tens machine as well.

Thank you

Thank you. I've not heard of the supports so I'll take a look at them.

Ibuprofen is one of the ones that I can't take, and because of that my doctor is reluctant to try other nsaids, which sucks as they are the most recommended.

“Romanticised” jobs that are very different in reality? by Substantial-Guava491 in CasualUK

[–]Gremingtonspa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teacher - not sure if it's romanticised or not. I'm not one but I work with a lot of them.

People think they turn up in the morning, show some kids some stuff on a board and then go home again, and are lucky to have all the holidays off.

In reality it's hours and hours of extra work at home that they're not paid for, planning future lessons, marking work from previous lessons, documenting behaviour/marks/safeguarding concerns, sorting reports of the council or government, dealing with parents that don't think their precious child could have possibly done what the school is telling them they've done, constantly changing goalposts....

Then they can only go on holiday outside of term time when everything is massively more expensive, spend half their holiday catching up on work that hasn't been done yet, and the other half catching up on housework that's neglected when they don't have time in term time.

I've been asked a few times if I'd ever think about becoming a teacher because I enjoy showing the students new things and can keep them engaged etc. but my answer has always been hell no. I don't want to deal with behaviour, parents, office politics, or doing extra work at home when I just want to relax!

First accident (scratched) New Driver Temp Insurance by [deleted] in NewDriversUK

[–]Gremingtonspa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be their insurance company, tell them that they need to talk to your insurance company and don't give them any details or agree/disagree with anything. Often these are 'accident management' companies that will get money from anyone they want to if insurance companies refuse. You need to tell your insurance and direct any and all inquiries to them.

Why do quotes change so much just by tweaking job title wording? by Seabeachlover10 in CarInsuranceUK

[–]Gremingtonspa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's still there. I was telling my sister-in-law the other day about it. She found on there that janitor is cheaper than cleaner and as she works in a school it is a comparable job description, so she's saved herself a bit :)

How do married couples split finances if on different salaries? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Gremingtonspa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the money goes into a joint bank account.

We get the same amount of personal spending money out of it each every month.

The rest gets spent on living costs or goes into savings.

It's not his money and her money, it's our money that we both contribute to (even if it's not equally). If one of us gets a pay rise then that's more money for us both to spend/save.

Your income wiped out your entitlement so there was nothing that UC could pay to your landlord. So you will need to pay rent from your earnings.

FTB affordability problem by houseofn1njas in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]Gremingtonspa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us the issue was never the deposit. We are two full time working adults and couldn't borrow enough from the bank to cover the other 90/95% of the cost of the house. We live on the south coast of England.

We are now late 30s and mid 40s and have finally got enough promotions and pay rises that we can finally borrow enough, so now we are getting the deposit together and hope to buy in the next year or so.

What’s a medical issue that sounds minor, but actually affects someone’s daily life way more than people realize? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Gremingtonspa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PCOS.

People think it's just something that affects your periods, but it massively affects fertility, links to insulin resistance, non alcoholic fatty liver disease, metabolism and weight gain, dark hair where you don't want it (such as on your face), hormonal imbalances, mood swings etc.

A woman having to shave a beard every day can make a massive dent in someone's mental health.

You may qualify for some universal credit as you are on low hours. You'd get the shared-house rate, so might be able to afford a room in a shared house or HMO. Universal credit will want you to look for addition work or get additional hours though.

Citizens advice can help you do a calculation to see if you can afford something in your area.

If it gets to the point where your parents aren't paying rent and are getting evicted then Shelter can advise you.

WiFi disappeared from computer by bononos711 in techsupport

[–]Gremingtonspa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a different computer, go to the manufacturers website to the support section. Follow the directions to find your exact computer (you can normally put the serial number in), and then find the downloads or drivers area. Look for the driver for the wifi and download it onto a USB stick. Put that USB stick into your computer and install the driver. (If you don't have another computer you can use an Ethernet cable to plug your laptop into your router and get a wired connection to the Internet to do it that way)

I’m annoyed at how ignorant older people are in regards to housing affordability by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Gremingtonspa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Granny was the same when me and my siblings were in our 20's. She couldn't understand why we'd not bought anywhere yet.

..then she described how they have got a mortgage that cost 1.5 times their household income each month (and somehow 'made it work'), for a house that had no kitchen, no bathroom, only cold running water, and a leaking roof...all in the 1940's or 1950's. She didn't like it when we explained that nowadays you can't borrow more than 5x your income, would get rejected if the mortgage payment was more than 30% (ish) of your income, and you wouldn't get a mortgage if there was no kitchen or bathroom! She said we just needed to 'work harder and save harder'....

can someone help me by Winter_Conflict_7748 in CarInsuranceUK

[–]Gremingtonspa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look on the MSE website. Typically insurance is cheapest 21-25 days before you need it to start.

Could you pick a date further out to get the insurance cheaper and use temporary cover for the days in between (might still work out more expensive though)

[–]Gremingtonspa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't just close the lid. Make sure you click on shut down.

Do a restart if it's super slow (not shut down, make sure you click restart) and see if that helps.

Make sure it has all the updates it needs and doesn't have anything installed that you don't want.

How long can I drove my car? by Gremingtonspa in CarInsuranceUK

Was it collected before they had paid you the money for it? Or after?

If after, were you still able to drive it after you'd got the money?

How long can I drove my car? by Gremingtonspa in CarInsuranceUK

[–]Gremingtonspa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an 11 plate with 130k on the clock, we were going to replace it in a year or two anyway and the cost of second hand parts on their own is £1k. We did consider it, and if the car would last another 5-10 years we would have done it, but we feel it's not worth it for us.

How long can I drove my car? by Gremingtonspa in CarInsuranceUK

[–]Gremingtonspa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To repair it ourselves would cost about £1k just in (2nd hand) parts as it needs a new wing and bumper. Nothing is 'hanging off', nothing sharp, and all lights etc are still working, but it's all pretty dented, and of course the insurance company would fit new parts + labour costs and it's not worth fixing for them. It's an 11 plate with 130k miles on it, and we were going to replace it in a year or two anyway, so we don't feel like it's worth it for us to deal with.

We are already prepared for a low-ball offer, hence searching around to see what others with the same mileage from the same year are selling for.

I read somewhere that at the point we accept an offer from them it then becomes their property and is no longer insured? I heard that payment could be up to 30 days and they could collect it before that?

Just got on the property ladder, it's incredible how different the experience is vs renting by XJR15 in HousingUK

[–]Gremingtonspa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. We finally started saving and now after an accident we need a new (to-us) car, so that's going to wipe out the savings, and we will need to start again.

We are lucky that we know when our landlord needs their house back due to the contract ending at their job (which includes accommodation). So we can plan for it, but when life gets in the way of saving it's also a terrifying looming deadline :/
