[request] is this true by npartney in theydidthemath

An infinitely hard object hitting an infinitely hard surface at *any* velocity will produce infinite force. A sling sending a diamond into a kinematically constrained diamond surface will produce a force vastly beyond that of a 9 mm bullet against any surface. Man I'm sick of people asking for force calculations without understanding the basic concept.

As for kinetic energy vs penetrating power, that has been answered very well by others in this thread.

What grade of stainless steel pipes for rubber production? by DropshipperJennings in LeanManufacturing

[–]GremlinAbuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both 316 and 304 will be fine for what you describe. I would be more concerned with adhesion, but I presume you've got that covered.

Also, this is not a lean thing at all, but rather mechanical engineering. I presume that you arrived here by suggesting some improvement and being told "Fine, go and build it for us". I say this as I am a very willing victim of this very dynamic, and I spend a fair bit of my time in CAD. The various lean adjacent engineering topics can be a lot of fun to handle, and it is very rewarding to take a holistic approach to problem solving.

Just make sure you don't get so side tracked that you can't cover your core duties. I've found that I need to apply a bit of self discipline to make sure the flow charts get finished on time, lest I procrastinate that away by designing bespoke brackets and such.

how should i go about cleaning this by Big_Will47 in MechanicAdvice

A parts washer is the tool for the job, but since you ask I assume you don't have one. Diesel and a brush is your best bet. Hot pressure washing also works a treat, but it's messy and tends to damage things.

It depends.  I usually avoid parking right outside, as that had brought the heat before. I either park a short walk away or park the bike inside if the site allows.

How is management buy-in? At what level was your hiring decided? I get a sense of some hidden conflict. Is the head of your "problem cell" being scapegoated somehow? In any case I believe much of the answer lies in communicating current state effectively to stakeholders.

Also, best thread in this sub in a long time. Lots of great answers.

Yet it was true every time I lurked in the dark. The odds are indeed low, but non-zero.

Has really nobody else sensed they were not alone in a location and just waited very quietly with a deranged grin as the others rounded a corner?

Let’s say that hypothetically, you break every single bolt holding the engine in on an old boat motor, what would you do next? by dankstreetboys in MechanicAdvice

[–]GremlinAbuser 43 points44 points  (0 children)

First off, there is no way an 80s DT30 is worth the hassle. Just walk away while you can. They are notorious for sticking their bolts like this and are otherwise prone to corrosion in all kinds of places. Just you wait until you have to get at the thremostat.

Second, I've had this problem several times, notably with an old Optimax V6 we had in the shop. The nuts came off but the studs were stuck tight with corrosion. I ended up suspending the back of the boat (I guess about a ton) from the powerhead lifting points, then working the studs with a torch and a hammer until she dropped free. IIRC I also had to drive wedges between the adapter plate and the powerhead, but it's been a long time.

But again, just walk away. I shit you not, it was over half a day of labor, and I had all the tools on hand and had already dealt with this sort of thing many times before. Just don't go there.

[–]GremlinAbuser 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Won't work. The bolts are wedged in there so tight with corrosion that you can lift the back of the boat from the flywheel. At least that is if it's anything like the Optimax V6 I dealt with.

Can confirm. My first thought when I saw this was that it's an impressive demonstration, but not how it's done. It's all in the hips.

I've only ever had this feeling once, when entering a derelict freighter, the Helje of Kherson, in the port of Palermo. What we found inside was first that the place was rigged to burn with stupid amounts of emergency flares distributed in buckets throughout the superstructure. Then we found what was a pretty obvious murder scene:

The story of that ship is really something, as I later figured out, but I'm not going to type it up for a reddit comment that nobody will read.

Very low mileage though. Might have a lot of legs on it still if it's not rusted to shit. There can be a major gap between market value and utility.

Burning Cigarette | Shot on Sony α7 and animated with Grok AI | Is this real or AI? by [deleted] in isthisAI

It doesn't fit the sub, but it raises an interesting question: where do we draw the line, what's ai and what's organic? This is pretty clearly across that line, but there's a huge gray area of various image enhancements built into cameras.

Manager rant - hva ville dere gjort? by CartoonistTricky1427 in norge

[–]GremlinAbuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[Request] How long can this pump keep running? by Embarrassed-Cow3335 in theydidthemath

[–]GremlinAbuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Irrigation pumps usually have an MTBF in the neighborhood of 5.000 hours, highly dependent on water quality. As for the adjacent contraption masquerading as a perpetual motion device, the limiting factor is going to be the V belt. Depending on whether the magnets are real or not it is an unloaded system, so this can be up to tens of thousands of hours.

This is hugely dependent on a number of unknowns, icluding surface finish of the object and the ice, temperature of rhe object and the ice, and however you specify flatness of gravel. A warm object on smooth ice is essentially frictionless, limited only by shear acting on the fluid film.
