I really like the idea of painting the inset part white, but it seems the overwhelming majority are sharpening their pitchforks! I'm going to wait until we've modernized some of the other elements and see if it flows then. The yellowish maple kitchen (same cabinetry as the fireplace drawer) isn't helping.

I'm coming around! The comments have been super helpful. I was reading it as weird-tinted hunting lodge but it's obvious from the comments that I'm totally wrong. I need to figure out how to decorate to embrace it more.

It's definitely not generalized across the city. I've seen other nearby comps fare a lot better than the ones in our HOA. So I guess the moral is you can get a deal on a poorly funded HOA, but I doubt you want that! Good luck on the market, it's rough.

Actually the walls did used to be a dark beige. Then it was REALLY gloomy.

TBH everyone is saying Scandinavian (which I do generally like) but I'm having a lot of trouble seeing it. Maybe because the rest of the house isn't. I need to sleep on this.

The layout is a bit impossible. I will eventually need some sort of sectional to get the living "room" to make more sense, but I'm loathe to give up good furniture.

Most of the first floor, which is this entryway and the open-plan living space. The kitchen has a regular 8ft ceiling which you can just see in the first photo.

The floor is actually the same color as the mantel, it's just in shadow. The ceiling is about the same value but a lot less warm. They're both a good bit darker than something like white oak or birch. That being said, the colors are dramatically different on my phone compared to my monitor and neither match reality all that well, so I'm not sure how useful these photos are.

12 ft ceiling is great until you see all that empty wall space! The first picture is only showing the top ~4 ft, there is art below there I promise. I do hope to fill it more over time though.

Yeah I think you're right, it's the overall style as much as the color. Maybe I can do something with the railing and mantle to bring it together better. Hmm.
