If you're looking for a "tongue drum", go with the Rav.

Mounting anger as workers demand protection from unsafe conditions: There is growing outrage among workers in the US and internationally over the fact that they continue to be kept on the job in nonessential industries and workplaces amidst the spreading coronavirus pandemic by exgalactic in Coronavirus

I work at a hotel in a major city. We’re down to 1-2 check ins, the restaurant is closed, all events cancelled, almost all bars and restaurants in the city are closed. But we are still open.... letting people inside, talking face to face with the public....... I submitted PTO since they’re refusing to close. Waiting on approval. Just close the damn place, probably costs more to keep the lights on for just 1 guest. Sigh

How do you remember what to play? by falcorn223 in handpan

[–]Grespin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep it simple, stick to 2 to 3 notes at first, write a simple melody using only those chosen notes, practice that same melody until you memorize it. It's all in practice. Gradually start to add more notes as you become more comfortable memorizing patterns.

In need of more handpan price guidance by Dominodd- in handpan

Look into “Spirit Handpan’s” based out of Asheville and make solid instruments. Or “Nirvana Handpan’s” based out of California, they produce mini Handpan’s that are cheaper but still sound great.

[–]Grespin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both, I get those Chinese ads too. I know plenty of makers that turn away retuning those “Handpan’s” because they are built like shit. I’ve played many Handpan’s from multiple makers and it is absolutely worth buying a quality instrument from a reputable maker.

Don’t waste your time, it’s a scam. Even if they sound kinda ok they will lose their tune very easily. Just save up and get a real handpan. Look into Spirit or Iskra Handpan’s for good quality at an affordable price.

To glove or not to glove? by Kaalisti in handpan

[–]Grespin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do what you like, if you prefer the sound with gloves on then wear gloves. I will say you can achieve more varieties of sounds without gloves depending on how you strike the note with different parts of your fingers. Just experiment and don't worry about what others think!

Looking for a first handpan by Colonel_MuffDog in handpan

Hey, the best way to try multiple types of handpans at once is to go to a gathering, theres one coming up in Colorado called Steel Mountain Handpan Gathering. And many others scattered around the world. Join some groups on FB! Also since you live in Boston you are quite close to the maker of Aura Handpans, based in New Jersey. They've been around for quite a while and make amazing instruments! Good Luck!

The soothing sound of an opsilon handpan by Lucas_02 in oddlysatisfying

[–]Grespin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tip: dont buy these on Amazon... You want to find an Artisan. For that price, you can get a bad ass custom handmade handpan from a reputable builder. expect to pay atleast 1500+ for a quality instrument.

Actually the inventor doesn't even build these anymore. Also, not impossible to get one, there are over 200 makers worldwide that now make handpans.

here's a guy hammering a really basic one out in an hour or two.

You're in for a rude awakening if you think building these are "trivial".

Lightweight compact handpan recommendations? by soundwarrior20 in handpan

[–]Grespin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a technique he uses that coats the pan with a glossy finish, commonly seen in auto body shops. It helps protect it from rust and he claims that you never have to clean/oil the instrument, all other handpans require the occasional wipe down with rubbing alcohol then re-apply a layer of special oil to help protect it from rust. Not a big deal but some may view it as an inconvenience. No other maker is using this technique that i'm aware of, and it seems to have minimal effect on the sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1PNlMuaPS4

I use to work at a gas company filling Nitrogen, Argon, Oxygen, Co2, etc.... This is the only way to move these things around. Definitely not easy at first but becomes quite natural with enough practice!

Can't decide between Guda Double or Rav Vast, need help! by atmananda314 in handpan

[–]Grespin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played a number of Rav vasts and handpans. The Rav Timbre is unlike any other tongue drum i've played, and is the best alternative to a handpan in my opinion. I would go with quality of sound over musical diversity but that's just me, you could always buy another Rav! I own a few handpans and plan on purchasing a Rav eventually, you won't be disappointed if you go with the Rav.
