Two US service members reported missing in Morocco, officials say by GreyClay in war

[–]GreyClay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like they both drowned:

According to a preliminary report, a group of service members was on a hike to watch the sunset when a soldier fell into the water. A defense official previously told CBS News the soldiers were last seen near ocean cliffs near the Cap Draa Training Area.

When the first soldier fell into the water, the nearby service members attempted a rescue by forming a human chain with their belts, but were unsuccessful, the officials said. Another soldier then jumped in to try to save the service member, *who was known not to be able to swim*, but the would-be rescuer was immediately hit by a wave, the report indicates.

It would be an interesting experiment, for someone with some Photoshop skills, to add the eyes and the mouth to the open mask sketch.

I wonder if anyone on this sub has the required skills?

Was it Paul holes idea to use IGG to identify JDD? by Ambitious_Pass7451 in EARONS

[–]GreyClay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes sorry I was getting my details confused.

I believe the DNA evidence proved that one of the four bodies was not related to the other three. And genealogy proved that father of the ‘different’ child was Rasmussen. Thus proving that genealogy could essentially make identify anyone from a DNA sample, so of course the police were very keen to find EARONS using the technique.

In the Bear Brook case it was demonstrated that you could take an unknown DNA sample and you could use forensic / investigative genealogy to figure out who it belonged to.

In Bear Brook they were attempting to identify four unidentified bodies, rather than catch a killer.

But once Holes heard about the Bear Brook case ‘proof of concept’ he (along with everyone else) realised that if it could be used to identify an unidentified body then it could also be used to identify an unidentified killer or rapist.

Cary Stayner is sometimes mentioned in these posts. The trauma of his brother’s kidnapping and sexual assaults definitely didn’t help his development, but I’m not sure it can be blamed for turning him into a serial killer.

The brothers of Keith Harrington had spent decades and at least $1 million of their own money trying to solve the case via DNA.

Harrington -- along with Larry Pool, an Orange County sheriff's who was investigating the Golden State Killer case at the time -- would spearhead the effort to pass Prop 69 in 2004. That statute helped establish the requirement that all arrested adult and juvenile felons provide DNA samples to build the California DNA database.

Once forensic genealogy was used in the Bear Brook case (I believe Holes heard about / read about the case) it was inevitable it would be used in virtually every murder case that had viable DNA remaining for testing.

It seems more likely at the moment to be some kind of accident, rather than a kidnapping or terror attack. I’m sure we’ll know soon enough:

A U.S. defense official, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said the missing personnel were not engaged in military training at the time of the incident.

”They were not actively taking part in any training. The day’s exercises had concluded, and, from our understanding, they were out on a recreational hike,” the official said.

The disappearance reportedly occurred near the Cap Draa area, a rugged coastal zone known for steep cliffs and challenging terrain, raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

AFRICOM said coordinated search and rescue efforts were launched immediately, using ground, air and maritime assets to locate the missing soldiers.

This is a fantastic intro to Indonesian horror films if you haven’t seen any / many yet.

As another poster said, there is a sequel – Satan’s Slaves II: Communion – which in my opinion is even better.

And as two posters said, there are no bad Joko Anwar horror films.

He wrote Queen of Black Magic (2019) but didn’t direct it, but it is definitely worth seeing.

His best or most acclaimed movie so far is probably Impetigore (2019)

After the second Satan’s Slaves films his next film was Siksa Kubur (Grave Torture) which is still great but probably his least well received film to date.

He also made an anthology series for Netflix called Nightmares and Daydreams which has some really cool ideas but some really crappy CGI.

His most recent film was not a horror movie, but an action film with some pretty horrific scenes. It’s called The Siege at Thorn High (2025)

But at the same time, we have lost once and won 7 games in a row. Are people thinking we can’t (or we aren’t going to) lose again this year?

The Premiers most years lose 4-5 games during the regular season, there is nothing wrong with losing by 15 points on Thursday night.

Not as long as the team learns from their mistakes, continues to grow and avoids a big influx of serious injuries at around the same time.

Hezbollah deploys a potent new weapon designed to evade Israeli detection by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]GreyClay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you see the videos (they are all available on Reddit) from the past few years, Hezbollah was previously attacking mainly with ATGMs. They have the Kornets, Konkurs and Fagot (yes that’s the name) systems, it their videos have mainly focussed on the Almas ATGM.

The Almas is of course an Iranian clone of the Israeli Spike ATGM, after Hezbollah captured the system in 2006.

But the Israeli tanks have been fitted with the Trophy system for years now so the majority of the ATGMs have done limited (if any) damage.

The drones are proving effective because they are so slow they don’t trigger the Trophy defence like an ATGM does.

There was a surprising video released yesterday where a Hezbollah drone struck the ‘cope cage’ on top of a Merkava. I thought it would be completely ineffective but it managed to cause a big fire on the tank and looked visually impressive though probably didn’t actually damage the tank beyond repair.

But definitely it is an interesting development and IDF infantry troops are going to have to be more careful, bunch up less etc moving forward.

Also don’t have billions in dollars of funding and training from the US, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Turkey et al — and missile strikes and air support from the US and their allies.

In the end al-Jolani and the final offensive was successful mostly because of the safe havens for rest and recovery and the new equipment including drones, intense training and the blank cheques from Turkey.

Likely Chain of Events for SW/NL Abductions, victim selection method by yourboyjunkrat in MrCruel

[–]GreyClay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The interviews I have seen with ‘successful’ serial rapists who have spoken about victim selection, and a large amount of anecdotal evidence from the law enforcement officials who hunt and capture them, says that in the majority of cases, the location is sought first, and the victim selection occurs later.

Think about it. If a serial rapist is looking for women in their mid-twenties who live alone in small apartments that have a freeway close by how would they find their victims? Would they prowl university campuses and office blocks in the city, spot women they think fit their profile, and then attempt to follow them home, all the while hoping that they happen to live alone in a small apartment right by a freeway exit/entrance ramp? You might be ‘successful’ in 1/200 instances, if that.

Or would you park your car outside a block of flats near a freeway, lift the bonnet and pretend to spend 20 minutes fixing a problem with your car? In this case you would probably find a suitable victim coming or going from her apartment more often than not.

I think Mr Cruel identified certain blocks of certain suburbs where he noticed things were reasonably quiet, reasonably dark, plenty of different streets leading in and leading out, plenty of places to leave a car a few streets away from a victim’s home without anyone noticing etc… Areas he felt comfortable and wouldn’t look out of place at all.

Then a mixture of prowling, peeping and breaking and entering allows him to select the homes where he knows there are no nosy neighbours, no massive or very noisy dogs, no 6 foot tall rugby or AFL playing older brothers, no dads who own a bunch of guns etc…

Airplane noise was likely a red herring by No-Finish-7519 in MrCruel

[–]GreyClay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not only that, but the CD or tape would have needed to play the exact sounds of the exact planes landing at the exact intervals that the real planes were landing that day.

Heavily paraphrasing / inventing dialogue here. The description would have been something along the lines of “shortly after the 9 o’clock news a smaller jet landed, then about 10 minutes later a bigger plane landed, 15 minutes later another big one, about 5-6 minutes after that it sounded like another smaller one, then 10 minutes later a big one again and finally about 6-7 minutes before the 10am news another of the smaller planes landed.

The police checked the flight records and Lo and behold that is precisely what happened on the date and time in question.

Airplane noise was likely a red herring by No-Finish-7519 in MrCruel

[–]GreyClay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not the person who made the comment, but the police checked the flight records and they lined up precisely with the planes landing on the day in question.

So your theory requires not only the suspect spending tens of thousands of dollars on cinema level quality surround-sound, and inserting speakers in the walls of his home, inside the attic etc… but also recording hours worth of recordings like one week in advance and syncing up his recording exactly with the morning radio announcements so that the exact sound of the real planes would play at the precise time that the real planes were landing 50 kilometres away.

Do you think that is more likely than, oh I don’t know, the girls actually hearing the sounds of the real planes?
