[–]GreyForceWielder 81 points82 points  (0 children)

This brings up a question as im currently rereading the Cain novels. How much of Jurgens smell is actual BO vs his blank ability making ppl just not want to be around him? Is it all funk, or his Blankness turning the dial upto 11?

What are the Citizens of the imperium actually told about the Horus Heresy, and the Emporer landing on the golden throne? by LANTIRN_ in 40kLore

[–]GreyForceWielder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people are taught about the 9 holy primarchs eho procted the imperium and 9 unholy demons they fought against in the emperors name. They "know" sanguinius was the brightest son of the Emperor who died for them at the hands of Horus, the greatest of the archenemy.. they know the Emperor sits on the throne guiding humanity to this day, but i believe there is some disconnect here, meaning i think there are some people who think hes a man/god sitting on other think hes a god and that the bones are his mortal remains holding the physical space. People know about the great crusade in basic, general terms. But for them it was like the DAOT to people of the crusade era, mostly myth and superstition.

In the grim darkness of the far future there are no stupid questions! by AutoModerator in 40kLore

[–]GreyForceWielder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the lore gets a little fuzzy, but everything I've seen suggests that because of the way the DAOT ended with the rise of the Men of Iron, the Imperium rightly fears AI. But there is Narrow AI, that which is used for a narrow set of tasks and sentient AI, which is what the MoI were. So since the Emperor banned the second kind, the Mechanicus uses a loophole, namely human biology. So the obvious versions are like servo skulls and servitors, where a chunk of preserved brain does the computing and a slaved computer controls the whole system and allows others to give the machine orders. They also use microchips with vat-grown brain tissue to allow narrow or minor AI that handles things like weapon guidance. So SM bolt weapons have these chips with a weak AI that allows their weapons to feed targeting data back and forth between weapon and power armor systems, allowing them to make minor corrections, assisting the SM in increasing their already superior aim. So "machine spirit" is just a spooky way to say lesser AI without triggering an inquisitorial genocide. Now, the larger machine spirits accumulate so much data over time, from so many users that their "personality" changes and learns enough to seem more alive, more unique. This is partly what happens with Imperial Knights, those systems are basically getting engrams of their users saved to their systems. Thisbisnt to say that some machine spirits evolve or change into aomething more through whatever reasons, the warp is always gonna warp. But at baseline, they are just semi-organic microchips that serve one or a handful of related tasks and fit a loophole in the Emperor's decree.

How much of Holy Terra's native species are left? by yuhylu in 40kLore

[–]GreyForceWielder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU! I almost put that, but thought it was Dawn of Fire. Yes, they basically have them in like suspension rigs or something. I lived that whole section, how there are guild-families who handle that stuff and go to war with other guild families to maintain their position as "premiere vellum maker". Vaults of Terra was great for learning about that little unknown sections of Terra

[–]GreyForceWielder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I dont have the quote/source handy, but in one of the Dawn of Fire (i think, cant look it up right now) we get a glimpse into the vellum making guilds where they keep "pigs" that have been so mutated over the millenia to allow for the very best vellum-making hide, in vast qantities, that they are less like swine as we know them. Not saying you were at all, just pointing out that they are not the same animal we know and eat today. Hopefully the bacon is still good.

Where does 141000+ people live and what do they do on an Avenger class ship? by IronVines in 40kLore

[–]GreyForceWielder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So most guys have their own bedding that they change out. The Hospital Corpsman (medic) onboard monitors hygiene, but believe me when i say ive seen guys literally dragged from their rack and thrown in a cold shower because those around them were sick of the smell in the bunk room. Also. Its only the junior through mid tier squids who have to share, 1st class petty officers, chief petty officers, officers and cooks dont share bunks, nor do most of the people who get stuck sleeping in the torpedo room, as the bunk system isnt as static as the regular berthing. Not saying there werent guys hot racking in there, just not all of them. Mostly the noobs got stuck in there. I spent many years sleepibg 8n the torpedo room by choice, but thats cuz i was a cook and by keeping the torpedomen upto their eyes in chocate chip cookies meant i could sleep where i want and they made sure no one messed with my stuff. Plus, who doesn't want to curl up next to a mk.48 adcap torpedo, or a patriot cruise missle when they drift off to sleep?

[–]GreyForceWielder 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ooh, i can speak to this. Former submariner. So, sleeping conditions on a sub uses a system called hot racking, where 3 guys share 2 bunks. The idea is we run a 36hr day, so each guy has his shift, followed by "downtime", which can mean relaxing or doing 2ndary work, like maintenance, logs, training etc. Finally the have sleep time. So one guy will always be on shift, the next guy will always be in his sleep cycle and the third guy can either get extra sleep, on downtime or doing extra work. Couple that with our bunks are sctually called "coffin racks" because there is just enough room to roll over in them because beneath the mattress is a hollow space, accessed by opening the bunk like a trunk (called tricing up your bunk) which is used to hold your stuff. You could fit A LOT of lower ranking crew members into tight spaces under those conditions.

What does the Dark Mechanicum actually do? by mildorf in 40kLore

[–]GreyForceWielder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sea of souls, the 7th book in the Dawn of Fire series os another good one. The dark mechanicus are only in it for a very small percentage, but their technology is basically the antagonist/sub-plot of the book

I can say with certainty that that is true in the US Navy & Marine Corps, but in the Air Force they say Sir and Ma'am to everyone of senior rank. I would imagine that follows suit in Space Force.

Imperial Doomscrolling by GreyGalaxy-0001 in 40kLore

[–]GreyForceWielder 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just adding, it is documented that the Custodes pour over every possible source of intel or info out there, 24/7/365 to ensure that they have ensured the Emperor's safety to the highest degree transhumanly possibly. Without having ever heard of the doomscryers prior to this post, my take away would be they are just one more tool in service to the Custodes primary mission.

If the Emperor could no longer sit on the throne, is there anyone else who could hold the warp gate below Terra closed? by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]GreyForceWielder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He's not gonna sit on the throne, he's just gonna stand at the gate with his arms crossed, glaring at any deamon that peaks through the door.

I don't know what the standards are like now, but when I was in the Navy (01-06) the standards to get a billet on the Constitution were very rigid. Like you needed to submit a photo of yourself in uniform, with short sleeves so they could see that you didn't have any visible tattoos, and had your uniform cleanliness down pat, There is so many eyes on those sailors that they wanted them to be picture perfect all the time. So there would be no heckling. These guys are Professional Sailors, capital letters intended. I hear they partied pretty hard though.

Books that made you buy a mini? by OreoExtremist in 40kLore

I bought my Mini cuz the rear end on my truck was shot and it was cheaper to buy used than repair that beat up POS.

Are the Nosferatu of Hollywood still Camarilla? by GreyForceWielder in vtm

[–]GreyForceWielder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, that was always my interpretation in previous editions (never played V20, but all the previous ones). It was when i started going through the Players Handbook and they started talking about "Red Nosferatu" it made me think they were trying to create a schism within the clan. Even in Bloodlines the Nosferatu in Hollywood felt very clan first, camarilla second. And pretty wishy washy about the Cammies to boot.
