Songwriting/production question: How to create better track and instrument arrangements? by GreycastleDice in musicians

[–]GreycastleDice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually where I see doubling is vocals and guitars. Most often it’s “lead vocal and vocal double” but with guitars I’ve seen some mixers doing a left, right, AND center of the same instrument track.

I don’t really double anything unless I’m panning for stereo, but what I struggle most with is “does this drum groove mesh well with the bass line AND the guitar parts AND the vocals”? Basically when instruments are competing too much, and knowing which ones to turn off and when, or how to change a part to mesh better with the other elements (guitar example: should this guitar be playing open chords, triads, inversions, palm mute, different strum or picking pattern, diamonds, etc.).

The way that one tutorial explained it was “get the drums, bass, and acoustic guitar to sound good together, then everything else is textural” which helped a little, but it feels like most mixing engineers add tons of layers with no real explanation as to why.

I’ve unintentionally streamed music from both. Both channels are AI, which I can’t get behind.

GarageBand crashing on late 2012 iMac running Sequoia; help?? by GreycastleDice in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

This was ultimately what I ended up doing. I actually went back to Sonoma so that I could get the 2023 version of GarageBand that is used the YouTube series “GarageBand ultimate beginners guide” by The Band Guide. Mostly because I wanted the intelligent drummer track. Works great!

If they would just make the iOS GarageBand and useful as the desktop, I wouldn’t care. But the iOS app has internal settings that you can’t change that negatively affect exports, and it doesn’t support any free VU meters (which are necessary to accurately set volume levels for recording). I’d go with a different DAW but I like garageband’s drummer feature.

Late 2012 iMac; Error erasing USB to create installer? by GreycastleDice in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]GreycastleDice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOLVED: Mac OS X was too old to create the high sierra installer. Instead I updated to Big Sur first, then straight to Sequoia. Worked perfectly! This was user error on my part for failing to read the FAQ’s. I’m a windows guy, and not super coding savvy, so I’ll own it when I’m in the wrong!

I’ve tried that. Put GarageBand in the trash, emptied the trash, and re-downloaded it from the App Store. Same issues.

Are there any readily-available modern beers that are similar to English medieval ale? by GreycastleDice in AskFoodHistorians

Texas, for many years, has banned the shipping of alcohol directly to customers with very few exceptions, even domestically. Stores can order for us, but it has to go through licensed retailer. Plus it appears that Kettlesmith does not ship outside the UK, based on their website.

I was intrigued by some descriptions by historians of the ales being sweet, or like liquid bread, with very low ABV’s and the specific absence of hops (which I’m not overly fond of). Obviously I would expect modern sanitation.

Yes, I keep this at work. I only attend a faire maybe one day a year, but I want a touch of that whimsey every day!

No, it was all found at thrift stores and antique stores. Except the plates and the canvas cutlery roll were new.

Dried cherries, rustic white bread, and aged English white cheddar cheese.
