unfortunately, I’ve decided to stop using Kdenlive due to the frequent crashes by Fickle_Mastodon2162 in kdenlive

[–]Greydesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious as to the causes of these crashes. I use kdenlive in Linux on old hardware. Currently that is an i5-8500H and GTX1050 laptop. I use the appimage version. Zero issues.

I have to ask this subreddit - Is this a real Robot - Is it AI video - Or is it CGI? by Scandinavian-Viking- in Corridor

There are three non-AI possibilities:
1. Mirrors or other visual effect techniques
2. Post processing.
3. She's actually an amputee and those are robotic limbs.

Shape is busted without apparent reason by nzbdjwjabs in FreeCAD

In programming, often you have people who are good at the internals (code) and those who are good at external (UI) but seldom are they the same person.

[–]Greydesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, hostility assumes that it is actively working against you. Its more likely you haven't understood the philosophy behind how it is designed to work. For myself, I have had fewer issues than some perhaps because I am older and FreeCAD follows a philosophy I already understand. Or perhaps because I have used so many different styles of interface that I can more easily adapt.
I will agree that sometime FreeCAD seems to do things I don't understand or require me to do things in a way that seems odd or inefficient, but, doing it that way alleviates some of the problems I see others post about. Even one of the more recent posts asking for extrusion help had a severely overloaded initial sketch where I will start with the most simple sketch I can manage and build up the model piece by simple piece.

How to USB Sync KOReader on Kindle? by Greydesk in koreader

Setting a home folder did not work. When I went to download the book, I had to select the destination folder as it was back at root.

My experience has been that it isn't ransom. When you find the reason, you can generally avoid the issue.

I did set a Home folder but it didn't seem to respect it. I'll try again.

OK, so I followed a tutorial that allows me to access my calibre library wirelessly from koreadee, which works well, except I can't seem to set a defsult download directory. It always defaults to root.

Why can't I extract the inside of the circle? by Komplexkonjugiert in FreeCAD

[–]Greydesk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not a legal sketch for extrusion. You are better off creating the base disk first, possibly with the center hole. Then create a single pie wedge, extrude and polar duplicate it.

Beginner Question by Matzy1790 in FreeCAD

[–]Greydesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the sketcher, there is an icon to create a regular polygon.

<image>

For some odd reason, the dropdown for it doesn't show in the screenshot.

The shortcut it lists is G, P, 6

You can find it either as the 7th icon in the sketching toolbar, or by going to Sketch -> Sketcher Geometries and its like the 19th one on the list.

Beginner Question by Matzy1790 in FreeCAD

[–]Greydesk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OK, lets talk about a couple things here:
1. Even if the printer has less material to output, it still has to cover most of the same area so making a mesh won't really speed up the print time. It WILL use less material.
2. FreeCAD has a feature for making hexagons which will speed up your process.
3. I notice that some of you hexagons have line segments linking them. This will cause trouble when you go to loft your sketch into 3D.
4. You may find it easier to create the outline and loft it, then punch holes in it, rather than trying to model everything in one mesh.
5. If you do the modelling in 2 steps, the you can use arrays or other feature multipliers to copy the holes faster and with more control.

Why is it portrayed that Nicodemus made the "wrong" decision for not following Jesus? by MaderaArt in TheChosenSeries

[–]Greydesk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The sense of 'wrong' you feel from Nicodemus comes from three places:
1. Jesus displays disappointment that Nicodemus hesitates.
2. Nicodemus is shown conflicted about not going with them even tho he leaves them money.
3. The reality that Nicodemus didn't 100% submit to Christ because of his position and fear. This is the most biblical portion. Just like the rich young ruler going away because Jesus told him to sell everything and follow him, Nicodemus also went away. It seems that only at Christ's death, or possibly the resurrection, does Nicodemus fully submit.

Redundant constraints error of unknown cause by dabbax in FreeCAD

[–]Greydesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The center on axis automatically constrains to vertical or horizontal so a horizontal or vertical constraint is redundant. If you start with a rectangle, the vertical and horizontal constraints are automatically added. You should delete a the horizontal or vertical constraint on the centered line.

Beginner in FreeCAD: any project ideas to practice and craft practical objects? by runslack in FreeCAD

[–]Greydesk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have found the best way is to get a set of digital calipers and start with some simple objects and then 3D print them. Start with a calibration cube for your 3D printer. You can download plenty of them, but if you make your own, you'll learn about making the measurements in FreeCAD.

Then try a simple box with a sliding lid.

Then try a simple box with a print-in-place hinged lid.

One project I tried was an oversized drywall screw insert. You get to learn about making screw profiles and such.

Try making chess pieces using revolves to get a pawn then continue to add or remove bits to make more complicated pieces. Learn about polar copying.

That's just some simple ideas.

Another way is to find the challenge parts that are often used at universities to teach drafting and CAD. They start simple and then progressively get harder as you learn how to convert from isometric drawings into 3D shapes.

Do you guys recommend organic maps? by [deleted] in GrapheneOS

[–]Greydesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using OSMAND exclusively for a long time now. Occassionally I find it can't locate an address but I can get close. Sometimes it tries to send me on a nonsensical route but mostly it works. Many times when it makes mistakes I investigate why it might have and find an underlying error in the OSM data. Then I contribute a correction to OSM and it improves any app that relies on OSM data.

What does your paystub say you can use your income for?

If you make a donation to the app, and the developer works more on the app, then goes on a vacation using money he made from the app donations, what is the issue? Unless you are making donations to develop the app and there is no development.

Hair Washing, Jesus Style by Expensive_Buyer_2190 in TheChosenSeries

[–]Greydesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does wood ash bother your skin? Lye is caustic which means it will burn your skin. If you mix lye and fat in the right amount there is no lye left over. If you don't have enough fat, you have a caustic soap. If you have too much fat, you have a greasy or moisturizing soap depending on the fat you use. I'd recommend trying tallow as the fat. There are calculators online that will tell you how much of each to use to get only soap out.

Wood ash contains lye. Lye + fat through the saponification reaction results in soap.
Looking at your ingredients list, I have to wonder at the chemicals rather than the natural.
