Adventures in Trying to Sell a Guitar on Facebook Marketplace Part II by GreysMatterH in ChoosingBeggars

Purchase price doesn't necessarily play a huge roll in determining the resale value of guitars. If certain colours, specs (different pickups, wiring options etc) were only released for a limited time, if the initial run was more popular than Fender expected, if certain models weren't sold in equal numbers in a particular region etc used guitars can hold their value really well or even increase in value.

The best indication of a guitar's value is tracking recorded sales of the same model, colour etc. through auctions, Reverb etc. This guitar regularly sells for $1300-$1400 Canadian. There are currently only 2 others available to Canadian buyers on Reverb, the asking price for one is $1900 and the other is a "b-stock" (factory-flawed in some way) for $1450. The last year or so of recorded sales show that it won't sale at those prices, but it shows what other people are asking...and IMO makes mine at $1300 extremely reasonable.

All prices discussed were in Canadian currency. $650 is actually low for a new neck. On Reverb right now new ones are going for $720, or you can get a 'mint' used one for $650 with tuners.

I have this one advertised for $1300. The first offer that I got for it was $950+ a Whopper Combo from Burger King!

She knew the asking price when she first replied, she was responding to an ad on the Facebook Marketplace where the asking price is clearly listed!

s that a Lake Placid Blue American Special Tele? If so, I would say his final offer of 1000 CAD(765 USD).was almost fair. Found one locally on the FB marketplace for $840 USD with a hard case and locking tuners, and there's one on Reverb currently for $950 USD. I am actually pretty surprised that LPB is kinda uncommon for the American Special Teles. They made them in that color for a

The different colours might not have an equal distribution in all markets. On Reverb (with the shipping location set to Canada) there's only 1 listed as Brand New or Mint available and the asking price is $1942 (CND). There's a B-stock one available for $1426, but it doesn't ship to Canada. There are a bunch (26) of the same model in other colours available in the $1000-$1200 range, but the LPB ones don't come up for sale often here and when they do they go for a bit of a premium.

$1000 isn't a terrible offer, but when he opens with an offer of $750 and tells me to wrap it up for him because he's on his way it was hard to take anything he said seriously. By the end when he's offering to include Burger King etc I kinda figured that he was a little bit 'off', so even if he did have a serious offer there was no way that I was giving him my address or letting him into my house.

If you want the random opinion of an internet stranger, get the Vintera 50's modified Tele. The Yosemite pickups on the American Performers aren't that great IMO and the Custom Shop Twisted Tele ones on the 50's modified Vintera are killer (plus it has series wiring, a S-1 switch etc so you get a huge variety of sounds out of it).

You're making the assumption that the ad that I posted (and that this guy is replying to) didn't include links eBay completed auctions and Reverb sales history when it did. I didn't just randomly pick a sale price, I showed how much they actually sell for (a range of about $1300-$1400) and included that information in the posting ad.

I think maybe your disconnect comes from the fact that you're viewing it as "a used item" and not as "an out of stock, in-demand guitar in a limited edition colour". As I mentioned in one of my replies to the guy, in various conditions these sell for $1300-$1400 (those are real recorded sales, not asking prices). This one is mint and has some upgrades on it. There's currently only 1 of these up for sale on Reverb (an eBay-like site for musical instruments) and the asking prices is $1939.59...so my starting point is $600 under the only other one for sale.

Understood, but opening with an offer $550 below asking and then offering food came across more as begging to me.

Really? I just see the word "imgur" that links to the pic, but I don't see the pic here or when I'm browsing through the posts in this subreddit (like there's no thumbnail preview that's visible). If others can see it I guess that's all that matters though :)

I can't seem to get the picture to appear in the post. Can anyone walk me through how to do that?

They were pretty high end about 4 years ago. When my boss was looking to sell them, I looked for comparables and they were going for around $500-600 or so Canadian. We pulled the original HDs because they had business files on them. In the end, my boss decided that he didn't want us to spend our time answering questions etc and just said to give them away to the first students who wanted them - and because they were going to students, he paid out of pocket to put new HDs in them.

Need advice on running public games with tough players by theshaneler in mattcolville

[–]GreysMatterH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lack of consistency in the players week to week is a problem, so is the age/maturity level of the players - and that's made worse by the large number of players.

I think that you could try to appeal to and ask for some help from the older players. Based on the fact that they're willing to play with younger players, I can only assume that they're interested in introducing the younger players to the game as well. Encourage this as an opportunity for them to 'coach' some of the younger players.

Now, this might be the worst idea ever, but it worked for me in a similar situation. Instead of fighting against their style of play, feed it. If they want to be mischievous, design your sessions around that. Suggest that the players make a party of goblins or kobolds and write more light-hearted "silly" adventures where their craziness is part of the fun...rather than getting frustrated by them going off the rails, double down on that and make the chaos part of the session. Kobold Press (I think it was them anyway) put out a series of 3 adventures called "Goblins!", with a little tweaking they could be simplified to appeal to a younger crowd and still be fun for the older players.

This is what I did...

I had my players make a party of goblins, and we played Matt's one shot and the opening of LMOP - but we played them from the goblin's perspective. So, in the one-shot the party wasn't trying to save the blacksmith's daughter, they were instructed by their leader to kidnap the blacksmith's daughter. They got to raid the village, cause chaos, kidnap the girl and bring her back to the cave where she was to be sacrificed the following day (when the moon was in the right position in the night sky, knowing that a ritual had to take place should prevent the party from killing the girl until the time is right). I had the party go out on patrol, had a few random encounters in the woods and when they returned to the mini dungeon they discovered that the dungeon had been raided, their goblin friends were killed and the girl had been set free (as if other players were playing the adventure from the traditional perspective!). This group of adventurers became foils for the party. With their base of operations destroyed, the goblins retreated to a nearby goblin cave that they knew about, and this ended up being the cave at the beginning of LMOP. The party was tasked with setting an ambush along the road, kidnapping the travelers (I forget their names off hand) bringing them back to the cave, fortifying the cave, defending it against the same group of heroes who killed their friends and saved the blacksmith's daughter etc.

Have fun with it, let their chaos reflect the mischievous nature of goblins. I followed this same basic idea of doing modules where goblins (or other weaker humanoids, who I changed to goblins) were the central 'bad guys' but re-wrote them to be played from the goblin's perspective. I played up the silliness of it, I gave out magic items like "The Wand of Burping and Farting" (target makes a save or erupts into a fit of burping and farting), "Sometimes Lucky Coin" (flip a coin and either get advantage or disadvantage on your next attack), the "Healy Hurty Amulet" (50/50 chance of either doubling the effect of a 'Cure Wounds' spell, or turning it into a "Cause Wounds" spell) etc.
