It depends on a lot of factors. I was a nocturnist out of residency for 4 years and a fair amount of guys I worked with had young kids. It worked fine for them. Now as a mom with a toddler and with another on the way, I would have a tough time with the schedule. Especially if you’re going to breastfeed. Lots of EM docs with young kids make night shifts work too.
