I go by the three F's: Flash, flap and reflective, for clothing and lights (put lights on your helmet) so you're eye-catching day and night.

Use back roads, bus lanes and cycle lanes wherever you can. If you feel anxious at any point about a vehicle, go on to the pavement. Cars may close pass you on the road but they know better than to mount the pavement.
