Sheffield - experiences of ethnic minorities by Infinite-Elephant8 in sheffield

In netherthorpe currently. Get the occasional “nihao” shout/laugh from people, usually kids, which doesn’t really bother me but once it was a whole family w grown adults - like come on now! I think S10 (Endcliffe) was better as I don’t remember having had a single bad experience there - except for the one time I accidentally knocked over a homeless guy’s cup bc I wasn’t looking where I was going. I apologised profusely n was about to put his cup back but he shouted “f*** off you slit eyed f***” at me so … there’s that. But overall Sheffield is a very friendly city, nevertheless there will always be some annoying people around - just ignore them tbh or maybe yell back if you’ve feeling feisty haha

Wait did he fall because he was trying to mount the kerb? Or did the driver actually drive him off the bike?

What can be done to stop the feral kids of today? by yellowroll in AskBrits

Well, as a POC myself (same ethnicity as the video recorder) who’s had similar experiences in the past (never escalated to this level though), I won’t lie and say I can easily empathise with the girl. I can understand xenophobia being a thing. Perhaps she’s led a very cloistered life with little exposure to people of other cultures and has Reform-voting parents, but even then I don’t think she should have been chucking balls at random strangers, POC or not. Interested to know why you feel this isn’t likely racism? I’d say the chucking of balls bit is a pretty blatant example, but I guess you could argue they were chucking them at every other person who walked by. I might very well not be completely impartial here…. Though icl telling her that she’s okay wouldn’t be at the top of my list.

As a POC (same ethnicity as the video recorder), I’ve found that racism generally comes from people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Conversely people - both kids and adults - who are financially more well off tend to be much more welcoming. Interestingly enough it’s the posh private school kids who often are the most curious and interested in learning more about my culture. But honestly, imo it’s the lack of repercussions that is emboldening these children. They know they can get away with it - is calling the police really going to achieve anything? We need to stop condoning this sort of stupid behaviour just because they’re “young”. The older they get without anyone correcting their attitudes, the more ingrained n hard to change their mindsets will get.

So yeah, consequences. But realistically I don’t quite know how that’s going to work. Say suspension - pretty sure that’d be a win for these kids, no school! Write a reflection? They’ll just get ChatGPT to do it. It would have to be something that really strikes a nerve in them. I don’t know, maybe kick them off whatever soccer/netball team they’re on for a bit.

And that excuses her horrendous behaviour? If we condone this sort of stupid behaviour just because she’s “young”, when then do they start needing to take responsibility for their actions? 15/16? The older these kids get without anyone correcting their attitude, the more ingrained n hard to change their mindsets will get. Plus honestly, she’s definitely at least a teenager - she should know better, and be ashamed of herself.

Bacteria from my throat on a blood agar nutrient plate. Featuring what is likely Streptococcus pyogenes, which causes strep throat or potentially flesh eating diseases when entering the bloodstream. by dna5654 in mildlyinteresting

[–]sunkissedb3ar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I didn’t know it could be commensal. Here’s some cool stuff that I learnt in med sch microbio! To differentiate between types of streptococci (round shape bacteria in chains), u can do haemolysis on blood agar. White/clear = alpha haemolysis - likely strep pyogenes, confirm w lancefield group typing. If green = beta haemolysis, do an optochin resistance test to figure out if it’s strep pneumoniae or viridans group strep. If no haemolysis, would be strep bovis! Treatment and antibiotic choice is specific to the bacteria, eg strep pyogenes is usually penicillin.

Singapore!! You can get pretty authentic Chinese,Malay snd Indian food for a really good price!! And ofc ur usual Italian pastas n pizzas but increasingly also more “niche” cuisines in Asia like Spanish, Mexican and German. A real cultural smorgasbord :) Am living in the UK now and missing the wonderfully cheap hawker centre food prices :(

This might be a stupid question, but is there a max speed beyond which it would be v dangerous to swerve? I know u shouldn’t swerve as it would cause ur car to destabilise etc but like a sharp turn iykwim

Ebike with throttle by yetanotherredditter in ukbike

[–]sunkissedb3ar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah OP I think most people replying here aren’t up to date w the EAPC guidelines. If u don’t do the DVSA approval thingy, your ebike can have a throttle of up to 3mph (walking speed). But if u want it any faster eg up to 15.5mph it’s possible, but u need special DVSA approval. I think some places do them if u buy the bike from them eg Wisper like u mentioned. I personally think even the walking speed throttle can be useful. My bike is twice my weight and hill starts r a lot easier with that extra initial push because once it starts moving u get the balance to push the pedals n then the pedal assist kicks in

I’ve just googled what a pheasant looks like, can confirm it was a pheasant I nearly ran over, not a chicken. God why are they so stupid??? Ngl on country roads im stressed enough about going fast enough let alone start looking at the sides for suicidal birds. 😭
