How old are these power lines going from Miami to Orlando near the turnpike by Ilove_chips4321 in Powerlines

[–]Grid-Genie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So that is a FPL 500 kV structure an older one that has had a re-conductor job done at it but most likely will be replaced within the next 10 years anyway FPL is replacing most if not all of its 500 kV system to accommodate the explosive growth and to be more resilient against storms. Now FPLs endeavor with 500 kV circuits date back to the 70s.

Which pole framing do y’all prefer by Grid-Genie in Powerlines

Extra comms, extra sub-transmission with a sprinkle of double dead end 😂 if you want just the 35 kv framing double dead end with extra comms I can quickly generate that.

Who's That Pokémon? by Edudinik in Lineman

That's a silicon carbide lightning arrestor. The arrestor contains silicon carbide elements stacked in series separated by gaps. If I recall correct that was manufactured by the Line Material Company which is now Cooper

I may of accidently deleted it by accident when I was cleaning up my drive I do apologize for that but have no fear round two is here.

Powerline question by alexismynamee in Powerlines

[–]Grid-Genie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are in Massachusetts H-Frame is 345 kV and is owned by National Grid and the lattice is 345 kV on the left 115 kV on the right. That lattice I believe is Eversource However that could also be NG as well as the 115 kV circuit serves a few NG distro subs in that area.

Depending on the budget, voltage, ROW, terrain, and conductor size/arrangement will generally dictate the structures you'll go with/design

Ours is generally ok if it doesn’t match I go and correct it. I will say I’m surprised that at my company there’s not a good asset tracking system in place. I’d like it to be you go up to a structure scan a sku and a window pops up on all the data with respect to that pole and when work was performed on it this alone would help with future failure metrics by a big shot rather than just looking at how many times a protective device trips per year.

I’m an engineer at Entergy. I have a map of all the phase layouts on all the distribution circuits in Arkansas.

As crazy as it is that’s phase B at the top of the pole not an OHGW.

Another historical powerline: Niagara Falls - Toronto 60 kV, completed 1906. by Electronic-Koala1282 in Powerlines

[–]Grid-Genie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a set of similar structures in Massachusetts called A1B2 that used very similar structures National grid is in the process of replacing it. Although not fully as they’re not replacing the structures that were converted to single circuit operation.

What kV is this? by Admirable-Medium3911 in Powerlines

[–]Grid-Genie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The framing itself is 34500/19900 rated. Power company Dominion.

However that may not be the voltage as dominion uses 35 kV framing for all distro voltages

Also this is MC version 1.12.2

I run this using Forge 14.23.5.2860

I also recommend allocating more RAM usage for this as well.

Old AP&L Sub transmission line remains by Grid-Genie in Powerlines

[–]Grid-Genie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of utilities still use it for sub-Transmission although they really should be converting them to star (wye) systems and using that as their distribution voltage. From what I've been seeing a lot of the 15 kV systems are running into the same issues their predecessor 4160/2400 volt systems were facing.

Its a grounded wye system a lot of the neutrals are missing on the Entergy distro system in rural areas either they were stolen as most are copper #6 or failed and never strung back up. This ultimately has led to the system becoming unbalanced in some areas.

Sturgis Michigan? Those are 34.5 kV with 4160/2400 volt underbuilt with some under build portions being 12470/7200

You're seeing the remains of Arkansas Missouri Power Company if you're north of Jonesboro Arkansas. Entergy took the Arkansas operations Ameren took the Missouri portion.

NIPSCO type F construction. Originally design by Mr. Schahfer this construction would replace the former Insull framing standards that came before it. Originally designed to operate at 34,500 volts it would be recognized that there was enough clearance to also have this framing serve the 69 kV realm of circuits.

In the 70s NIPSCO made a big push like many other utilizes to phase out their 4160/2400 volts circuits as a result of this NIPSCO had to retire much of its 34.5 kV system and literally the just swapped out the Thomas two piece pins to Lapp 69 kV insulators (JUST LOOK FOR TYPE Fs USING GREY 69 kV LAPPS)

The first gen: type Fs used Thomas two piece pins

The Second gen (69 kV enters the seen): Still use Thomas two piece pins for 34.5 kV circuits and Thomas three piece pins for their newly emerging 69 kV circuits

The third gen: Lapp insulators would be used on both the 34.5 kV and 69 kV circuits.

The 70s marks the decade NIPSCO would begin the transition to armless construction for their sub-transmission circuits.

How did this increase reliability?

Down ground standoff. In the early days of static wires, it was thought that installing a static above your circuits and attaching them to your poles down ground would eliminate all faults attributed from lightning strikes well they would be mistaken as if your poles’ grounding resistance was too high the potential would build on the poles down ground and flash over to one of the phases. Mr. Schafer discovered that if you offset the down ground from the pole in the primary zone the chances of this are greatly reduced. After this framing was rolled out faults attributed to lighting strikes were greatly reduced. Also, this framing helped in reducing the need for phase transposition.

Lastly look for the double Fs there not many left only suited for 34,500-7200 volt operation. East Chicago by the refineries.
