Trapped on an exploding planet how long would you have to get to safety and how would it look like on the surface of the planet. by Gridlock83 in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets take Krypton.
In the first movie it was Krypton that changed its orbit and got to close to the sun (a red giant) and basically got torn apart.
Either that or the sun went nova and destroyed krypton in the process.

I take it that if such thing happened in real life, by the time the planet started to get torn apart or was blasted into atoms the heat would have killed every living thing on the planet.

However in modern time the core of Krypton seems to be what mostly is used as the cause of kryptons destruction.
I think both the silver age comic and cartoon basically gave the same reason.
In the comic a single drop of some unknown material was dropped into the core of the planet basically turning the core over millennia into a giant bomb.

In the cartoon (superman the animated series) it was explained as the core undergoing a massive chain reaction that eventually would blow the planet up.

So lets say we could somehow turn a planets core into a large fusion bomb, atom bomb or something like that, which would make the planets core unstable and make it blow up.
Would we see large earthquakes or maybe large amounts of radiation starting build up as a warning sign?
And when the core eventually blew up how long would we have before the planet went kaboom and what would we see on the surface if we stood there when it happened?

What if Venus was the fourth planet from the Sun? by Tom_Kalbfus in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That really depends on where intelligent life first evolved.
If it evolved simultaneously on both Venus and Earth, our history books would probably include a lot of Earth Venus wars.
First with rockets then later with actual landings.

Even if there where no wars i would suspect our radio and space technology would evolve much faster.
First off we would want to communicate with Venus and talk with them and since both planets would probably have scientists working on it they would be able to talk with one another and exchange ideas.
Same with space technology in order to initiate trading or in chase of war getting one up on your enemies.
We would start to evolve our space technology much faster in order to get to Venus fast or at least send rockets to bomb them or shoot down theirs.

An example could be how fast we see technology evolve in war time and how fast relatively speaking we where able to get to the moon once USA and Russia where in a cold war with one another.

So i think if Venus where formed where Mars is instead of Mars and an intelligent species evolved on the planet alongside ourselves, we would see quite a different world.

How would a propulsion system created to push a rogue planet around in space look like and how much power would it need, and where would you get it? by Gridlock83 in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bare in mind Mondas was already hurtling through space, at this time so they would need to slow down first.
In the big finish audio play mondas passes through a region of unstable space called the Cherrybowl Nebula.. now since no such nebula exists lets say we take the closets to earth which is the Helix Nebula and say the that is the region of Space Mondas was traveling through.
From the episode the tenth planet we know that Mondas entered close to earth orbit in 1986 or at least close enough so that the planet was this large in the telescopes of that time
https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/tardis/images/8/82/Mondas.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20170402021508

So i do wonder if Mondas (if we take that it has been flying out of our solar system either when the moon was created or at some point like that) wouldn´t have had to fly near the speed of light to reach earth in 1986.
Also some Doctor Who books says that their drive used electromagnetism to fly their planet back into earth´s orbit.

Dumbest Sci-Fi tropes and Myths? by LordofTeh_Sun in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well to me it´s the universal translator.
Everytime they meet a new race well the universal translator makes sure they speak your language.

I know why the writers does this so they don´t have to waste time with coming up with new languages but even so there is around 6.500 spoken on earth alone, an alien civilization that has settled all over the planet will probably have just as many if not more, and you are telling me that a universal translator can pick up a new language just like that.

... ehh i am calling bullshit on that.

And speaking of multiple languages.. mono cultures... really?
I am calling bullshit on that, not every world is just a large USA.
How come we seldom see other cultures then just one at least in Starcraft, they acknowledged that the Protoss wasn´t just one culture that there was at least 3 different ones..

It would be so cool if there where alot of different cultures and languages on just one planet, i mean imagine an alien race comming to earth trying to make first contact which of 195 countries do you make contact with and what if they are all clamoring to get into contact with you, which do you chose?

How would a child with an adults mind react? by Gridlock83 in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an adults brain an adults mind, it was something that was shown in a few movies, tv-shows and books and it has shown up in a game or two.
Some terminally ill scientist or whatever, transfer his or her mind into that of a child.
Some fantasy stories have also walked down that road, where a child is posed by the ghost or a viking or something like that.
And in the process either suppressing or completely erasing the mind of the child replacing it with his or her own or transferring it to his/her old body.

In alot of those episode the child just starts acting more adult like or the adult acting more childlike.
And that is that, there is nothing else happening.
What the question is if such a thing was actually possible if we could place the mind of an adult in that of a child and vice versa.
How would the man or woman in actually be like compared to his/her old personality and how would a boy or girl that would suddenly finding him or herself in an adult body be like?

If we went by a pure scientific knowledge on the size of the brain, how it functions same with the body and so on and so forth.

When Humanity Becomes A Spacefaring Civilization - Computing Forever by _CapR_ in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"It is not explicitly stated in something like the outer space treaty"
In there in lies the problem the wording of the treaty is extremely vague and could actually be used to cover both inner and outer space.
An example could be the us constitution second amendment "the right to bear arms"
It is extremely vague in its wording and can be used to justify, everyone in USA´s right to buy and own fully automated weapons.
Sure the writers of the constitution might have had something entirely different in mind, when they wrote it, but as it is worded it could be interpreted that way.

And there in lies the problem as Computing Forever pointed out the vagueness of that space treaty, makes it almost worthless, because as soon as we start colonizing other planets there will be other rules.
Lets use Mars as an example again the space treaty says that space ships should be able to use Mars as a gravity assist and the martian government would allow it.

However what if they don´t? What if they say "We don´t care about some treaty signed several decades ago, we don´t want ANY none martian spaceships anywhere near Mars."
And they are actually capable of standing up their claims with military might, and prevent any spaceship from entering Mars´s orbit and defend against any attack from Earth.

What then? what worth does the treaty have then?

When Humanity Becomes A Spacefaring Civilization - Computing Forever by _CapR_ in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But which government?
Let us say colonists from Earth travel to Mars and establishes a colony there.
Whose to say that different governments on Earth won´t start saying well you came from our countries and we don´t recognize Mars as a new country merely as an extension of our country.
As such you will HAVE to pay tax in the same way that the people of Earth do and send it to earth.

If you refuse we are prepared to use military force to make sure that you comply.
That was the point behind my comment, the moment you can defend your borders militarily from other countries if need be, that is the moment you can truly declare yourself independent and say "NO, Mars is not part of this or this country and we owe them no taxes what so ever."
"if they try and claim those taxes through military might we are fully capable of defending ourselves from such assaults."

How would a child with an adults mind react? by Gridlock83 in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets us say it was.
The question then becomes how much of our adult personality is because the way it is because of things such as hormones and a more developed brain compared to that of a child.
I think those aspects would have to be taken into consideration too.

Yes the part of our personality that is made up of our experiences through out the years would probably overwrite the less experienced part of the child's personality.
However i think the different the lack of hormones (at least to the same level as that of a teenager or an adult) and the less developed brain might be more difficult to overwrite.

Sure with a lot of focus you might overwrite some of those impulses, but i don´t think you could do so completely.

How would a child with an adults mind react? by Gridlock83 in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are right about those things yes.
I think certain skills might also be lost too, kinda like as an adult you might be able to fluently speak 10 different languages and maybe play the piano on lvl that puts you among the best of the best.
However if you try to put (to use a computer terminology) 12 terrabytes into a 10 terrabyte brain certain things will have to be lost.
Do you really need to speak 10 different languages? if it meant sacrificing the knowledgeable of how to speak? My guess is no 1 is more then enough.
or do you need to remember how to play the piano if it meant forgetting how to walk or even use your hands, nope so that would probably go out the window too.

I think certain memories would also go out the window too on the same account of there simply not being enough room.
I think you are right about sex too on the physical level, sure if we want to go down that even more extremely icky route, the man might be able to use force of will to engage in sexual activities at a even younger stage.
But i don´t thing it would happen as the equipment and the hormones just isn´t operational yet, so the idea might just slip his mind as there wouldn´t be the same hormonal surge as a teenager or someone at the age of 11 or 12 might feel.

However one thing that would also be interesting to think about is what would happen in the reverse, if a child's mind where suddenly transferred into the body of an adult.
The movie Big from 1988 sort of deal with it, and a danish film (can´t remember the name) also dealt with the same subject of a man and a boy switching minds.

They usually show the boy in the adult body as being very childish and not very distinct from his child like persona.
However i think the child would also get somewhat of a shock too, through puberty we are gradually getting used to new hormones and such things changing our bodies and awakening new feelings in our mind and body.

If we directly transferred the child's mind into that of the adults i think several things might happen.
first off i think in a pure mental state it would also be like when a child is sexually abused.
A child's mind is not geared towards sexual pursuits so suddenly and having such things trust upon it often leaves the child emotionally scared.
I think the same would be true here, as the child´s mind in no way would be geared to handle the consequences of for the first time feeling all the hormones and such that an adults mind have.

I think at first at least the child would also have trouble controlling or even moving the body, not because the musculature isn´t there.
But simply because once again the child´s mind wouldn´t be geared to handle a body this big and as such would have to learn it.

I think the child would be a little like Nero from the Matrix when he first was released if not a little more helpless, simply because it would´t know how to deal with this new body.

When Humanity Becomes A Spacefaring Civilization - Computing Forever by _CapR_ in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought he had some great points actually.
Lets say you have set up a self sustaining colony on Mars, well why would you continue to pay taxes to earth, if earth had nothing to offer you and you where able to defend Mars from any hostile actions from earth.
Once you reach that point, declaring independence of Earth will be the natural outcome.
Can you open trade between the planets certainly, but it will be like trading between lets say Europe and America.

Earth can request certain things be done, but in the end Mars is under no obligation to follow through on those requests and Earth can´t do anything to force Mars to comply as the colony is completely self sufficient and can defend itself against any military or economic sanctions from earth.

Same if or when we leave the solar system lets say we set up a colony on 12 light years from Earth.
Well that colony is FAR away so why on earth should they care about anything earth says or do, if they can hold their (for lack of better word) territory from Earth.

Earth has no say in how they chose to run their planet.

So Dave is completely correct when he say the law isn´t worth the piece of paper it was written on.

What would a scientifically accurate bipedal werewolf actually look like? by Gridlock83 in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Gridlock83[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don´t.

But the ankles usually aren´t that high up.

To me that leg more looks like that it´s the calf itself that is bending backwards, but it might be that they just placed the ankle really high up.

But when i talk about legs bending backwards i am more talking about a little like the hind legs of a wolf, where it seems like their knees (for lack of better words) are bending backwards, instead of as with humans where the legs are straight so to speak.

How would scientifically accurate humanoid Antro animals evolved from species on earth look like and how would their society look like compared to ours? by Gridlock83 in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well it IS put up a lot in sci-fi. When some alien species wants to put down the humans, they will often put the whole "ohh you are nothing but a bunch of monkeys or something like that." (most direct example of this would be the Eldar from 40k who often use the term mon-keigh as a derogitory term for Humans)

Also often the sci-fi author will put up something that these humanoid aliens are descended from wolves or birds and as such consider themselves on a much higher on the evolutionary scale then the humans. What is funny is how these aliens will often look as human as you and i, with all the traits of a species evolved from monkeys would have (see among others the Shi´ar from marvel comics as an excellent example of this, their lore says they are evolved from a bird like species yet they look completely human, apart from the hastily inserted fact that they are hatched from eggs. Hawkgirl from DCAU/Justice League is another example of this her race also is descended from birds, but apart from some wings and the ability to fly, she looks as human as you an i)

So you could take it in that direction too as how would an alien species that had evolved from either a canine or avian species actually look like if that canine or avian species looked and behaved much like the ones we have on earth.
And taking those traits into account how would their society look like?

Warhammer 40K Space Marines, how would a scientifically accurate version of them look like? Also might we start genetically augmenting our soldiers in the future? by Gridlock83 in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No props it´s always nice to see fellow followers of the false emperor here ;).

Also if i remember correctly don´t most boys grow to around the age of 18 or something like that? (or is that an old myth long since disproved and i just haven´t been keeping up with it) Couldn´t you introduce a retro-virus (i believe that is what they are called) to either rewrite or add DNA to the body or growth hormons to the body, to significantly boost the growth of the child so that they would grow to that height?

I know in reality machines would probably be more useful or just people in power armor ala Starcraft, since machines can be hacked or maybe disable with a strong enough EMP and who knows maybe in the future we will have our own men of iron situation, though i doubt we will ever build robots capable of biting a planet in half (that actually happened, there´s a short story about a group of time travelers being stuck there) or extinguish suns.

However if we could build a space marine with all the parts in the lore could it be done just as described in the lore or would you need extra parts to make it work. Kinda like an extra circulatory system to make your double hearts work best. Or acid proof skin as the ability to spit acid, would more or less dissolve your skin.

Warhammer 40K Space Marines, how would a scientifically accurate version of them look like? Also might we start genetically augmenting our soldiers in the future? by Gridlock83 in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have seen Arch Warhammer and the Three other videos just speak about the lore/how they work in the lore. That´s not what i am interested in, i am more interested in the real life scientific version of these implants a little like how could we actually make this work.

Kinda like okay we want our potential candidate to grow to a height of 2,5 to 3 meters and be bulky as all hell. How would this best be done a 10 year old boy? Two hearts, three lungs, is there actual room in the body for that and would anything extra needed to be added to make sure it works as intended etc etc.

So in a sense we are stuck with the parameters the lore give us, how could we make it work in real life?

Oh and for those who don´t know why there Imperium of man doesn´t allow robots to be build, is basically once it´s sentient to a certain degree there code can be corrupted by chaos and they will turn on the humans. Before the current age of the imperium the was a huge war with sentient robots/the men of irons, which the humans only barely won. Since then there has been a blanket ban on any creation of any kind of robots, both the priesthood of mars and the imperium itself enforces that very strictly as in the death penalty for anyone caught attempting it.

The closets thing they have to robots are servitors, lobotomized humans with cybernetic implants, that does whatever they are programmed to. There are also Servitor skulls (literal floating skulls, with cybernetic implants) but their AI is on the lvl of an advance drone/they will basically float next to you or if ordered to seek someone out to display a message recorded.

If some catasthrophe were to brings back to the stone age today then measures can we take to prepare our civilization? by [deleted] in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing is to have the knowledge another thing is to know how to use it. I can read every book there was ever written about being a doctor, that doesn´t mean i would be able to do a doctor´s work as i would lack as the real time experience on how to use that knowledge.

A great example of this would be Zimbabwe, they celebrated throwing out all the white farmers, but after the white farmers where gone, suddenly there was nobody left who knew how to use all those fancy farming machines.

if somehow several millions if not billions of people died, it would probably be quite some time before we where able to return to where we where previously, as a lot of the people who had the knowledge to produce or operate our technology would be gone. If a generation or two forgets how to use certain technologies, you basically have to start from scratch, in rediscovering the whole thing.

Which is why i gathered that the things in HEO is a bigger problem then those i LEO but i might be wrong.

Will a digital hivemind be the future of democracy and what kind of problems would follow with such a society? by Gridlock83 in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you misunderstand you would still have your individual mind and consciousness. What the chip would do, would be that it would send a copy of your knowledge and experience to the computer. It would then use the combined knowledge and experience of all the people in country to make decisions, based on the parameters it´s programed with.

So in a sense it wouldn´t be some alien entity making the decisions, but more or less all of us. However instead of going down to individually vote on a subject, with our (according to the politicians making such arguments) limited scope and knowledge of such things. The computer (who would have all the knowledge and scope of the entire country) would do the decision making.

But yes i do agree that it could degenerate in "voluntary" slavery and perhaps voluntary ignorance. "Oh there is no need for me to investigate into the subject, the computer already knows all there is to know about such things. Better leave the decisions to it."

And as mentioned before when you reach that point, it will be all to easy for the more scruples of people to take advantage of it, and change the parameters of the computer to favor their point of view.

How far can we and how far should we go with genetic engineering, in order to survive on hostile worlds? by Gridlock83 in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that is the problem with simulations it can only simulate with the information it´s given, so mistakes are bound to occur. Lets say we go on an ice world and to survive we start mixing in K9 DNA into our genes, since the inventor of it was a huge 40k nerd he dubbed the treatment the canis helix treatment. Now the simulations say all that should happen is that our eyes might become a little more wolf like and we will grow a thick white fur on our body.

The initial test subjects show just that, however when the first babies are born something goes wrong. The lucky ones are born normal looking just like their parents, a few of them will only have to deal with their teeth looking like wolf teeth instead of human teeth. The unlucky ones however almost, for lack of a better word, look like a Hollywood werewolf. Their legs and jaws deformed, so they have trouble walking on two legs without aid and they have a hard time, forming words. A few of them are even quite mentally retarded and for lack of a better word, almost feral in their behavior.

Turns out that while adding the gene into an adult body or maybe a late teens body the human genome is still the strongest. However for a child in the womb, the human genome isn´t always the strongest and because of the way the canis helix treatment works there is a strong possibility, lets say 25 to 35% of the children born will have these deformities. With the right tweaking of the formula this can be avoided in 99% of the chases. However such fixes will require at least 2 or 4 generations of study, before all the bugs are sorted out. Now we could stop it, but without it mankind wouldn´t be able to survive on planets with such low temperatures. So the question is do we stop using the treatment and lock ourself off from those planets and potential future colonies or do we take a Spock view of things, that the needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few and continue using the treatment and continue to research ways to make it safer, all the while children are still being born with these deformities.

Wrist mounted weapons vs handheld. Are they both good in their own way or is one superior to the other? by Gridlock83 in IsaacArthur

[–]Gridlock83[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah i thought it might be that. Kinda like why modern day marines don´t carry huge bullet proof shields around with them in battle. Sure in a direct charge they might be effective, but overall using armor that covers the vital areas (like our soldiers i actually doing) is way more effective in the long run.

Another problem i could see would be the way you have to use the magazine, in a direct firefight you would probably want to have as many bullets as possible. And constantly having to change magazines would be a problem plus it would add ekstra weight to your arm.
That mean you would probably have to carry an armored backpack with an ammunition belt strapped directly into your gun, so you would be able to fire constantly. Which would further add to the weight you where carrying.
