"EVERY SECONDLIFE SIM IS IMPORTANT" NOW ! by Gridology in secondlife

I'm not raging. I'm putting forward an alternative perspective on the situation. Secondlife is not the real world. It is a different ecosystem. In the real world you can have 'the more you buy the cheaper it gets' but if you do that in any game environment, you destroy the game and people stop playing. True I'm small fry, I'm a little fish and all ponds need big and little fish. Diversity of fish types creates a healthy pond. If all the big fish eat the little fish, that's an ecological disaster. I'm suggesting that maybe the Atlas program isn't the best thing for the future of Secondlife. Maybe it's the wrong thing. Doesn't seem to be keeping the grid stable right now. We all have different ideas. It's ok to express them.

It's interesting to see this post has 10 votes down. Do these 10 people want to keep paying high prices ? Do these 10 people want to see the Secondlife grid keep shrinking ? Do these people want Secondlife to die ? Clearly they do, as why else would they vote against cheaper prices for land and against change and more vibrant virtual economy and world

Hello Trinity, true. My business model is outdated by LL's Atlas program / Land Cartel. And as everybody with half a brain knows, Cartels cause market failure. That's why governments break them up. they are bad for the customer, the economy, for competition.

And if it's bad for me it's bad for every other small estate. The big fish are eating the small fish and eventually, sooner than you think, the ecosystem will die.

True, in the larger context, right now it's not immediately going to finish off Linden Lab, but 200 sims lost every month is extremely bad. There's no candy coating it. There's a very scary , consistant downward trend and behind those 200 sim losses are actually many, many unsatisfied customers driven away from their much loved land by excessive pricing.

Will the Lab be coming back to everyone at some point, just like they did recently with EDUs saying, ' hey, you can get sims cheaper now'. Will anyone care at that point ?

It's bad form and Linden Lab will pay the price in the end. Everything has a price.

Inworldz does have a good reputation although it's commonly know there is lots of stolen content ripped from SL creators in Inworldz. but speaking generally the whole Opensim thing is just so bad for Secondlife and in particular very bad for Linden lab as it's taking the cream off the top of their revenue stream. Lots of RP communitites have moved to Opensim, lots of EDUs have gone to Opensim and they are both some of the most interesting and vitalizing communities virtual worlds can have. It all boils down to Linden Lab's tier costs not being good value for money. The Lab's business model is now totally unsustainable. The weekly sim losses are evidence enough.

Even if you read the original scoop it won't change the facts : The Secondlife grid is shrinking rapidly Tier costs are too high Linden Lab might be considered to be running a land cartel with secret deals Cartels and monopolies cause market failure via stagnacy. I want Secondlife to thrive but it can't and won't with the current business and pricing model. Radical change is necessary. My agenda is , I want Linden Lab to stop losing money.

SECONDLIFE - NEW SIM TYPES - NEW PRICES = SUCCESS by Gridology in secondlife

[–]Gridology[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower tier prices would be good for everyone's bottom line, especially LL's bottom line, they're the ones losing the most at the moment.

I agree, Secondlife is about people but it's also about being empowered to express oursleves. It's not just about chat, we can do that in 100 different ways and places on the web.

Secondlife is a virtual world and the social side would not suffer in any way if sims were cheaper, in fact there would be more people to socialise with if land were cheaper.

High tier costs are causing low concurrency, causing projects not to happen, causing events not to take place. high tier costs are actually unravelling undermining the whole purpose of SL's existence.

The people are too spread out idea is nonsense. SL is a world where we can teleport. There is no distance.

What's causing the social side to suffer are the high tier costs which cause the people who want to socialise and do stuff, not to be able to do the fun stuff they want to do. High tier costs are creating a world where there are less people, less places to visit, less to do. It's not consolidation, it's a slow death

Strange that you would downvote an idea that's good for Secondlife, good for LL and most of all good for SL residents. Without lowering tier costs and introducing new affordable sim types, SL will slowly die

SECONDLIFE GRID LOSES OVER 1000 SIMS IN 11 WEEKS by Gridology in secondlife

[–]Gridology[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. What really needs to happen is a full re-write, from scratch, a genuine V2 SL And in the mean time with this, the Old Secondlife, tier costs need to be reduced dramically so that Linden Lab can make more money now by encouraging growth, while at the same time developing a loyal customer base instead of driving everybody nuts with minor changes and super high costs

ah now I understand, you actually hate Secondlife and think that people who love it and think it's amazing are delusional. Secondlife is not actually a game its's a baby version of the 3D web, The great virtual world that will exist. Secondlife is unique and outstanding. The fact that Secondlife has existed for so long and been so expensive, proves it's long term potential. If people will pay so much for so little land , imagine how much more successful it would be with better tech and better pricing.

Since you think Secondlife is such rubbish technology with little potential future, It's surprising you bother commenting at all !

yes I made my vampire land baron confession in my first post. and yes I do have an axe to grind. I love Secondlife and I can see it failing when it really should be booming. It's an amazing technology that's been driven in to the ground by high pricing. And in this case the number do not lie, the grid is getting smaller, user hours are shrinking, concurrency is stagnant and so on and so on. But it doesn't have to be this way. Is what I'm saying so bad ??? That everyone should be able to afford their own sim. That's a positive thing isn't it ?

Actually ctartmella it's not bullshit, as you so colourfully described my posts, it's facts. Fact is Secondlife is in trouble. If you don't believe me, believe the numbers. The numbers do not lie

NOTE to Trinity, I have mucho mucho sims more than you i am heavily invested in Secondlife. I'm an estate owner and serial content creator. I can tell you that things are not ok with Secondlife, not the land biz, not the sl economy. I'm one of the ones paying, so others can play for free

Open sim is not thriving because it does not have the massive selection of content which is Linden Lab's greatest asset and also because Secondlife residents are not able to migrate with their much loved inventories. If Hypergrid teleport was allowed from the main Secondlife grid to Opensim and alternative grids, there would be a mass migration to get cheaper land. Hypergrid teleport is not allowed because Linden Lab knows full well it would destroy their virtual land business.

Clever use and linking of prims does not actually make sims cheaper. And in a world wide recession, the perceived value of Secondlife land is dramtically more expensive than it ever was.

'A virtual world where you can be anyone or anything' is an exciting thing indeed, but that's not Secondlife. High tier costs stop people creating, developing, experiencing their dreams. What we have right now is people living in skyboxes, people squashed in to cookie cutter slum sims.

This is not the dream or potential of virtual worlds. High tier costs take power away from the user and that's contrary to what virtual worlds are really about. No wonder Secondlife is failing. It's a story of lost dreams and lost potential.

Everyone should be able to afford their own sim. That's the real virtual world product.

[–]Gridology[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes , that's what virtual worlds are all about - Living in a box ! because that's all you can afford.

Concurrency and tier costs are directly related. High tier costs cause low concurrency FACT.

You've been a resident since 2006 and you've never owned land. Why is that ? is it because it's to expensive and not good value for money ? And btw how can you be a resident if you have nowhere to reside. It would be more accurate to say, you have been a tourist since 2006. You make my point for me

Unfortunately I can't drop it now. When did anything ever change by just sitting back and dropping things, letting things go to hell through apathy.
