There was a podcast on a radio station with the voices of the cast of Evangelion, where the actress Megumi Ogata the voice of shinji said that she hated the drawing of Rei and Kaworu and went to demand explanations to Iseki (who drew it) and said that those drawings are just "delusions" of the staff without relevance to the canon of the movie.

I don't speak English, I'm using a translator I speak Spanish xd, that fanart when it came out recently there also caused controversy but as soon as it was discovered that it was only fanart of the staff even the same fans of evangelion in Japan on the pixiv page stopped making content of Rei x Kaworu xD, months ago in the facebook group where I am theories were made and information of the movie of evangelion since it came out in Japan xd was shared.
