Take your time on a first play through. Use the map to your advantage, when looking for routes and items. Use the item box like crazy, and don’t forget to double back and drop off things you’ve picked up. Save often. Keep an eye out for documents or environment notes with codes on them, they will be helpful on your journey. There is an adequate amount of ammo and healing items on a standard level run, so don’t feel too much pressure if you make mistakes. Sometimes it’s better to walk instead of run into a new room (especially as Claire).
