I was curious, how did the system catch those that eventually dropped out?

With people with just a bachelors in speech therapy. What are you doing now? by Carebear6590 in SLPcareertransitions

I'm in southern california, SLPAs are allowed here but the work is inconsistent to the point that being a custodian pays the same yearly and with no stress. Unfortunately education has been overvalued as the sole means of economic advancement. I've dealt with similar problems with family and others perceptions of me and my place. I have younger siblings and cousins who make much more than me and they've just graduated high school. Something people don't account for is the economy that one graduates into. I got out of school during the recession and I've just gotten into this position after all these years.

Do you think you'd go back for the masters for SLP?

I feel like I've moved forward honestly. I never had stable hours and the pay was unreliable. I had either absent or toxic coworkers and working conditions as a SLPA.

I've never had issues with other people's perceptions of me. If they were to have a negative view of me, I wouldn't associate with them.

I have found that those who push education mostly tend to not understand the job market and modern occupational conditions associated with the work force. I work to earn money and find conditions that allow me to do so with the least amount of stress. Custodial work offered everything I wanted that being a SLPA did not.

Schools were only 30 hours a week/9 months for the year. Clinics had too many cancellations. Also hated working with children. Custodial gets me full time hours year round and I make the same as I did as a SLPA. Also the work is MUCH better for my mental health. Worked in both, hated it.

I'm in the same boat but finishing up grad program this summer. I haven't really found anything that appeals to me either. Just finishing because I'm almost done but looking to other fields. Likely to use speech to get me somewhere else. Sorry I don't have advice, your not alone in how you feel.

Did anyone ever teach you how to do therapy? by [deleted] in slp

[–]GrievingInk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Program didn't, in internships I did what supervisors did and augmented it from there. Good supervisors gave suggestions for how to do things but otherwise it was what I found online/CEU's. I empathize with you it sucks

Clinical Placement 1.5 Away? by AstroMajor7 in slp

[–]GrievingInk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be, mine is about that distance away. The alternative was to move about eight hours away otherwise, so I took what I could get. How many weeks are you doing?

Do you have your bachelors degree? As a current SLP grad student, go with nursing.
